INTRODUCTION
The art of scoring at job interviews is the art of seduction. Yes, we’ve said it. This applies to men and women alike. You seduce your dream job (and your hiring manager) by offering your talents and skills in a tantalizing package, comprising of a sleek, professional resume and polished interview skills. Now, you don’t wantonly show off cleavage, or stuff your briefs with socks to make your package look bigger. That’s cheap, and will disqualify you from the job race in a heartbeat. In the professional world, the art of seduction is subtle, yet powerful. While the formal rules of the workplace are stiff and uncompromising when it comes to gender and sexuality, they don’t — and can’t — encompass non-verbal cues, such as tipping your chin in a certain way or looking into someone’s eyes. At this point, you must be asking:
Is mixing interview advice with the art of seduction really such a good idea?
Well, depending on who you ask, you’ll get very different answers. More career advisers and communication coaches today are saying that playing up your sexuality can be advantageous to careers and winning business. Others say that such tactics are unprofessional and inappropriate at best, and, at worst, a regression to earlier times of discriminatory gender stereotypes.
However, your hiring manager does not make hiring decisions on a wholly rational basis. In fact, nobody makes any decision on a rational basis. Decisions are based on impression too. Men’s testosterone will not stop working when they’re interviewing an applicant, and women will not stop assessing applicants based on the qualities of dependability and competence that are synonymous with the manly provider. Darwinian proclivities (in plain English, humankind’s attraction to good genetics) are inevitably at play wherever an interview is underway.
In the competitive world of job-hunting, you’ll need every ounce of leverage that you can get over the other person. Create an impression by using seduction subtly and tastefully. By varying your flirtatiousness according to the context of your interview, and without turning up the sexual volume indiscriminately, you can be sure that you’ll make a deep impression in your hiring manager’s mind. Worried that you won’t be able to pull it off? Don’t worry, you’ve just picked up the perfect book.
Screw You, Interview teaches you how to land the job by bringing out the inner casanova or seductress in you, along with imparting other conventional do’s and do-not’s as you prepare for your interview.
Chapter 1
PRE-INTERVIEW TIPS
First impressions count. In a survey that targeted employers and hiring managers, 9 out of 10 said that first impressions were the most important factor in determining whether an applicant was in or out. However, many candidates fail to create a memorable image for themselves. No matter how much experience you have in your given field, or how outstanding your portfolio is, you’ll be hard pressed to erase a negative first impression that comes with ill-fitting clothes, sweaty appearance (you rushed over due to miscalculation), or a prudish, unimpressive demeanor. The key to creating a smashing first impression is the pre-interview preparation.
This chapter consists of everything that you should know and prepare for before an interview. From taking care of your appearance to possible questions you’ll be asked, this section teaches you how to make hiring managers want you (hard) at first glance.
Eliminate Those Pre-Interview Jitters!
Eliminating pre-interview jitters is a matter of preparation. Reviewing your resume, mental re-enactment,
