About this ebook

Alexander Lockwood, normally so polite, considerate and loving, has changed. He’s being hostile to Madeline, refusing her advances, and leering at other women. He knows this is happening, and he doesn’t know why, but what worries him more is that he also realizes he’s been losing time, falling asleep at the office for no reason, and forgetting things.

Madeline is at a loss to explain the changes in Alexander. After twenty married years, she was certain that she knew him so well. Why would he hide such violent tendencies, pretend for so long that he was someone he wasn’t? No, she knows that something’s happened to him, that something is seriously wrong. She loves him more than anything, and she’s determined to have him back. But how can she, a vampire of little more than two decades, hope to stand up to a one with the power of nine centuries?

Then, one night, he loses control. He does something for which Madeline may never forgive him, and then he disappears. When his old friend, Lucian, who loves Alexander like a brother, offers to help, Madeline is hopeful. But will Lucian only make things worse? Or will they be able to save Alexander before he’s too far gone?

Excerpt:

Alexander started to advance on Lucian, who gave ground, backing away, pushing Madeline back as well, trying to keep a manageable distance between them.

“She is mine,” Alexander said again. Then, amazingly, his eyes softened and he turned his gaze to Madeline. He stopped advancing and held out a hand to her. “Madeline,” he purred, “come to me.”

Madeline’s eyes glazed over and she took a stilted step forward. Lucian’s hand shot out, grabbing her by the wrist, holding her in place. “Madeline,” he growled, “snap out of it!”

Madeline shook her head, fighting the compulsion, knowing that her husband’s power over her was amplified by her desire to go to him, by her love for him, by the mere fact that she’d fed from him. She put her hand to her head, closed her eyes, and concentrated. A sharp pain split her head and she cried out. Alexander faltered. He heard her and he staggered back a step, losing his grip on her. Madeline opened her eyes, met his, and threw his power back at him. He fell back a few more steps. Deep inside him, something awakened. The poison began to lose its hold on him, and the real Alexander began to battle his way back, spurred on by that one cry of pain from the woman that he loved more than anything.

“Alexander,” she said softly, “I miss you. Come back to me.”

Alexander’s head pounded, and his stomach reeled at the pain. He stared at the woman and the beast within roared in frustration as he struggled to hold it back. It demanded that he pounce, drive her to the ground, tear into her. It wanted nothing more than to feed on her life’s blood, take her body violently. Alexander’s heart broke as he fought, trying desperately to get back in control. He used a burst of adrenaline to try to claim control of his body, and he dropped to his knees with the effort. He met Madeline’s gaze. “Kill me,” he hissed through clenched teeth.

Writing is the ultimate escape from reality. You can read or watch a movie, but you're not truly immersed in another world like you are when you're creating one. When I'm not writing, I'm wishing I was and when I'm writing I'm living another life. There's some of me in every female character who lets me write her story--some more than others, but I'll never tell which ones. In my other lives I'm a sexy vampire, a powerful witch, an independent werewolf or a seductive human. I can be anyone and anything I want, and who wouldn't want to do that? My genre of preference is fantasy romance. I became infatuated with vampires in high school when I read a book about a girl, who'd recently been turned, who allowed herself to die in the first rays of dawn rather than feed on the boy with whom she'd fallen in love. I remember that part vividly because I thought it was the most beautiful depiction of unconditional and unrequited love that I'd ever read. I promptly devoured every book with vampires in it that I could get my hands on (in my age range, of course). At the time I wasn’t interested in romance novels, and eventually I ran out of teen vampire stories, so I tried my hand at writing one. Over the years, my characters and stories have matured with me. At first, the only characters I met were vampires, but eventually, other characters came to me, and I discovered I had a thing for tall, dark and handsome aliens as well. I spend so much time with my characters that they become real to me, and all my friends and family have gotten used to me talking about them that way. Thankfully, if they think I’m crazy, they keep it to themselves. I’ve also been very lucky in love. For 26 years, I’ve been with the same wonderful man who is very tolerant of the fact that I fall in love with the leading men in my books.

Veronica sat at the bar alone, nursing a dry white wine—her first and only drink—as the other patrons happily got drunk. No one spoke to her. No one approached her. It almost seemed as if no one even realized she was there. She was invisible. She was actually glad as her gaze slid around the bar, looking at the other women. They were tall, willowy, well-proportioned. It seemed like they all had perfect hair, clear skin, and were confident in their beauty. Just being near them made Veronica feel like a fat, ugly troll. She was shorter than most of them and she wore her plain brown hair pulled back in a careless pony tail. She self-consciously pushed her glasses back up her nose, tossed back the rest of her wine, and dropped a few bills on the bar. She spun around on the stool and stood up. With a sigh, she glanced around the pub one more time looking at all the attractive men she would never have, and left.

Her flat was small but she didn’t need a lot of room. It was just her and her plants. And, The Room. Once she was secure in her apartment, the door bolted three times against the world, she turned off all the lights and went into The Room. It was originally just a large walk-in closet but she’d closed it off, fitting it with a real door instead of the folding pocket door that had been there when she moved in. Now it held all the things she treasured most, tucked safely away behind four deadbolts. She unlocked them and stepped inside, clicking all the locks closed again before she turned on the lights. They blazed harshly to life and she was surrounded by him. Pictures, sculptures, newspaper clippings, and one very old painting. All hers. And soon, very soon, Alexander Lockwood himself would be hers too. Forever.

    * * * *

Alexander jerked awake with a start. He sat up, surprised at himself. He’d never fallen asleep at the office before, but then he’d been doing a lot of odd things lately. Losing bits of time. Waking up in odd places and not remembering how he’d gotten there, and he was starting to get worried.

The phone rang softly and Alexander automatically lifted the receiver to his ear. Lockwood, he said tersely.

Is that really how you answer the phone these days Xander?

Alexander frowned, his mind racing. Lucian?

    You remembered! I’m honored.

I heard that you died, Alexander told him.

Tales of my passing and all, Lucian laughed. I heard you got married.

That’s true, Alexander confirmed. I wish you’d been there.

So do I, Lucian told him. What about Charles and his vow? Did he come to the happy day?

Alexander sobered. Yes, he was there. And back again actually.

And your bride? Lucian asked. Is she still alive?

Yes, in a manner of speaking. I’d love for you to meet her, old friend.

Whoa, Lucian said, laughing again. Watch that ‘old friend’ talk. You’ve got a couple of centuries on me, easy.

Alexander smiled. I’ve really missed you.

Me too. I’m actually planning to come to London in a couple of days, Lucian said. That’s why I’m calling. I’ve got business there and was hoping we could get together.

Definitely, Alexander agreed. Come by the office when you get here. We’ll set something up. And you’ll get to meet Madeline.

I’m looking forward to it, Lucian said. I’m sure I’ll love her.

I know you will, Alexander said.

They hung up and Alexander leaned back in his chair, his mind now on Madeline. He smiled as he thought of her. Twenty years now they’d been together. In chronological years she was 49, but she hadn’t aged a minute since her transformation at 28. She would remain young and strong and beautiful for centuries to come. He pictured her long ebony hair; her slim, lithe body, her beautiful glowing green eyes. He knew she loved him as much as he loved her. She’d proven that time and again. He’d come to trust her with his life, and she trusted him with hers.

As though his thoughts summoned her, she appeared, striding through his office doors without preamble. She had a pile of mail in her hands and barely spared him a glance as she walked in, shuffling through the envelopes. I can’t believe that you have all this money, and you still get piles and piles of junk mail, she said. You’d think you could hire someone to delete your name from all their lists. She stopped at the desk, dropped the pile in front of him, and looked up. He was staring at her with a bemused smile on his face. She smiled back automatically. What?

Alexander laughed. I was just thinking how wonderful it is that you’re in my life, he said. And in you walk with something as mundane as the mail. I love you more and more each day. Did you know that?

Madeline blushed, and looked away awkwardly. How is it that after all this time together you can still make me feel like a shuffling schoolgirl?

Alexander got up and walked around the desk, pulling her into his arms, capturing her lips in a thorough, breath-stealing kiss. Time seemed to stand still and they existed only together, only for each other. The world fell away. He nibbled at her lips, persuaded her to open for him, and he swept in, tasting her sweetness. When he lifted his head again, she was flushed, her lips slightly swollen, her eyes dilated with passion. He placed another light kiss on the tip of her nose. One minute you’re a shuffling schoolgirl, he whispered, "the next you’re a beguiling siren, inviting me to make love to you
