    Introduction

The Tarot is like a road to adventure. At times colourful and bumpy, sometimes silent and serene, and always around every bend there the lies the possibility of a new revelation that can open us up to an understanding of the inner workings of our own psyche’s, and this of course is the greatest adventure of all.

Your intention in reading this book may be to learn the Tarot with a view to setting up a successful Tarot Studio or to read for friends and family or perhaps for your own pleasure. Regardless of the reason, you can be assured that as you dip your fingers into the deep waters of the Tarot that you will undoubtedly bring up droplets of valuable knowledge and understanding about yourself and the world around you.

I have been most fortunate in my teachers, Anne Shotter who first opened the door for me, and then through ongoing training or their written works, teachers like James Wanless, Rachel Pollack and Mary Greer. Heartfelt gratitude and thanks to each. Heartfelt gratitude and thanks to each. Special thanks to Aileen Purantatameri for her stories about making weather, talking to trees and for telling me in no uncertain terms You sing ‘em.

For me, learning the Tarot is like learning a new language, it is rich and organic and each person that you meet in this world will add their own unique nuances to your understanding of the language.

So doing the journey, know that it can take you as deep as you wish to go. It can take you beyond information and into a place of profound knowing which brings knowledge and acceptance of self and quite possibly peace.

    Enjoy.

    The Cards

The Tarot deck has 78 cards which are divided into the Major and Minor Arcana, or major secrets and minor secrets.

The 22 Major Arcana cards can be described as representative of the 21 steps, lessons or paths that the Soul moves through in each incarnation, or it can be explained as the 22 archetypes, essences or aspects of the self.

The Minor Arcana is made up of forty number cards and 16 court cards (page, knight, queen and king) all of which are divided into four groups or suits which are called the suit of wands, pentacles, swords and cups.

These Minor Arcana cards offer us the details about our lives as we live them, that is, who you are or what part of your Self is involved in the situation.

    A Little Background

We know that the Tarot is a tool used for divination. Its colour and imagery, the symbols embedded within the cards, these have spoken to the hearts and minds of people throughout history. The earliest physical evidence of the Tarot that still remains is the Visconti deck which was in use in 1440 and can be found displayed in galleries throughout Europe. It is generally accepted that Tarot cards were in common use until being banned by the Church in the 15th century. It is interesting to note that at this time which was prior
