About this ebook
These short stories relate the experiences of Reginald Smithers, a policeman in a small English village in the first half of the 20th century.
Constable Reginald Smithers is appointed to the village of Stackfort on Humber as its only police presence shortly after the end of The Great War. Here he meets and marries Kathleen who for ever after is known just as ‘Mrs Smithers’.
Shortly after his marriage a sergeant was appointed to Stackfort on Humber as the village was beginning to grow. The sergeant did not fit into the life of the village and also proved to be rather inept. Smithers was soon able to demonstrate the sergeant’s incompetence by his own brilliant detective work. After a number of incidents the sergeant was transferred back to London and Smithers took his place.
Over the next thirty or so years Sergeant Smithers experienced many adventures and received many commendations for his bravery and ability to solve the most difficult and baffling crimes. The highlights of his career were the solving of the mysterious death of a distinguished, wealthy local land owner, (a distant relative of the great Horatio Nelson) and his involvement in strange events during a holiday in Brighton.
During this time he also participated in all aspects of life in his village; raised a son to follow in his footsteps; played in the local cricket team; even had time to enjoy the wonderful pastries made by his Aunty Doris.
Smithers loved village life and even though he was given many opportunities for promotion, which would have involved moving away, he refused them all and remained the village sergeant until his retirement.
