Chapter 1 – Frogs, Yes, Again

Tidus made a grave mistake; he foolishly befriended and trusted another teenager. He now found himself sitting in the principal’s office of Ford High: School for the Misbehaved and Unruly, awaiting his sentence. Tidus wasn’t supposed to be in this school, he was innocent. His cry of innocence was ignored behind the walls of Ford High, an endless amount of other students claiming the same. He stopped protesting his stay here and just buckled down and prepared to spend his junior and senior year in a school of misfits and future criminals.

Tidus sat with other students awaiting sentences for whatever rule they broke this week. They all wore the same uniform, black slacks and buttoned shirts that had their last name and student ID number stitched on the breast pocket. The students chatted with each other, but Tidus kept his distance. In his previous school friends brought him down and he came into Ford High willing to give friendship a second chance. Obviously that wasn’t working out to well since he was sitting here being punished for a broken rule that his so-called friend committed.

Tidus, The elderly office assistant called. Please, stand.

The others waiting with him snickered as if they weren’t minutes away from being punished like him.

The woman focused on her computer screen. The principal has sentenced you to janitorial service.

A freckled face kid who sat right of Tidus laughed. Marty touches kids, good luck man.

The others started laughing until the office assistant whistled and quieted them down.

Tidus sighed. Fine, it’s not as if I can say no.

Just report to the basement, Marty will be waiting. She gawked at the freckled face student. And Devon, he does not touch children.

I guess she’s in on the game, Devon mumbled his breath.

The students all started laughing again as Tidus left the office not amused.

He made his journey through the maze of halls of Ford High. The school was built in the middle of nowhere and was as secured as a maximum security prison. In every direction you looked cameras were installed on the white stone walls and even inside the lockers. All the windows were secured by metal bars and the doors only accessible by a keypad. It had been years since a student even got close to escaping the school. If they had managed to breakout of the building, only a wall of thick metal that surrounded the school property awaited them.

Above the school was the dormitory area for students and the teachers who also lived on the property. A secured athletic field separated the school from the security building that was protected by a guard who was allowed to use force to keep any students from trying to access the building. Tidus did his best to avoid trouble, now taking a further step and overall avoiding building any type relationship with his fellow classmates.

He arrived to the basement door and made his way down a set of creaky steps. Tidus brushed some spider webbing from his buzz-cut dark hair and brown skin as he arrived at the bottom of the stairs. He continued down a narrow hallway that was poorly lit by flickering fluorescent lights. Tidus came to a stop as a spotted a frog in his pathway. The frog growled and fled into a floor vent. Tidus raised his right brow, positive that wasn’t the noise frogs should emit. He shook off the strange event and continued forward to find Marty facing away as he stood at his work bench.

Hey…uh, I’m here to help. I’ve been sentenced to janitorial service, Tidus said.

    Marty remained still, not responding.

    Sir…

    There was still no response.

Tidus got closer and tapped the scrawny man on the shoulder. I was sent-

His sentence abruptly ended as Marty, who sported a bloodied bite mark on the tip of his nose, turned, growled and tackled Tidus to the floor of the basement.
