The voices drowned out all other conscious thought. It started slow, like a trickle of water. A woman ran late for an important meeting. A man fretted over his children's education. Children played in the park. A fifteen year old boy went over plans to murder his abusive mother. A drug addict promised herself it was the last time.

More and more poured in until the conversations were a blur and nothing made any sense. It was as if someone had opened a door to a crowded room and everyone was pushing out.

Adelaide Hunter gasped at the confusion and squeezed her eyes shut. She gritted her teeth and willed it to go away. Her head throbbed and she thought her skull would explode.

A hand gripped hers and she felt someone stroking her hair.

Someone was in the room with her.

    She tried to think.

It's alright, Adelaide, said Joshua, let it happen. I am here with you. Relax. Don't fight it.

Joshua Carpenter. Her teacher. Her substitute Maker.

    It hurts, she gasped.

Because you're fighting it, he said. Let it in. Only then can you control the noise.

She breathed deeply and tightened her grip on his hand. Tears streamed down her face into her hair, cold and sticky. Sweat dotted her face and she noticed distantly that she was shaking. She took another deep breath and her jaw relaxed.

Good, he said. Now open up. Let the voices flow into you. Once you hear them all, you can pick out the one you want.

How? she said, willing her eyes open. Her vision was blurry, but she could see Joshua standing over her.

Keep your eyes shut for now, he said. It's easier. Focus only on the thoughts around you, those closest. They will be the loudest.

I still don't understand how this will help me find my Maker, she said. Adelaide was a vampire, or was becoming one and she didn't even know who her Maker was. And her Maker was causing her and other vampires in the city a lot of trouble.

All in good time, Adelaide, he said. All in good time. Open yourself to the thoughts and voices of the night.

Okay, Dracula, she said. Geez, cheesy much? She cracked an eye open to look at him. Her vision wasn't as blurry, and she could see he wasn't amused.

You're going to lose it if you continue, he said, and then we will have to start again.

    Okay, okay, she said, sorry.

Joshua was right. She could already feel the voices fading. She really didn't want to go through all of it again. It might be easier, but the headache was not worth it.

She exhaled and tried to relax. Her jaw throbbed from clenching it so much, but it was a welcome relief. Her hands and shoulders eased and she melted into the cushions beneath her.

The voices came in like a tidal wave and she gasped. Instinctively, her body tensed again, but she forced herself to let go, if such a thing were possible.

So many sounds and thoughts, she wasn't even sure where to begin.

Very good, said Joshua. You can hear them now, yes?

    She nodded slowly.

Excellent, he said. Focus on the loudest and the clearest. Those are the closest. The others will fade.

He was right, again, of course. The others faded away to nothing more than a murmur, like standing outside a crowded room. The first four voices that first appeared in her mind were strong now, very strong.

She zeroed in on the boy. His mother was drunk on the couch, an empty bottle of vodka on the floor. Adelaide felt the ache on his cheek where his mother slapped him, the bruise on his chest from being shoved into the stove, his burnt hands from the heat. Adelaide heard the echos of his excuses to his friends and their sad understanding.

He was going for a knife on the chopping board. It was still dirty with onions from dinner.

A knife would be messy. It would leave blood. Adelaide and Joshua would smell it. The apartment was only three floors down.

    Trash lived everywhere.

The boy hesitated as he held the knife over his mother.

No, thought Adelaide, too much mess. There had to be a cleaner way to end it. Just walk out.

But with her dead, the boy thought, I'll have her money.

Not if you're in jail, Adelaide thought. Walk away. You'll find your own way. This is better.

She'll haunt me forever, he thought.

    So will her death.

He lowered the knife and put it back in the kitchen. It was better than the horrible woman deserved, but at least the boy would have a clean conscience. He grabbed his bag from the hall, took a final look at his mother and left.

Adelaide jerked upright from the couch. Sweat poured down her face and she wasn't just shaking, she was shivering as if someone pulled her from a tub of ice.

Joshua wrapped a blanket around her and gave her a tall glass of whiskey.

Drink, he said, it will help settle you.

She did as she was told and took a sip. It was hot on her tongue and burned her tongue. She shuddered and looked at Joshua.

I stopped a murder, she said.

I would have let him do it, said Joshua. The woman was a monster, but I believe you took the higher ground.

    You saw that?

He nodded. "I nudged you towards him. I knew it would be easy to push him one way or the other. In a way, I'm proud of you. I certainly wouldn't have gone
