About this ebook

The only thing Michael could do was to switch his cell phone with Kate’s. He had the opportunity and he took it without hesitating. He would face the consequences later. When he looked at Kate he knew he had to do something fast. It was far too loud to even start a conversation. He was mesmerized as he watched her. She smiled as she walked out of the pub. When Michael got his first call he knew he had done the right thing. Life suddenly changed. The adrenalin charged through his body. The whole family sat listening to the goings on. They sat with abated breath as they listened to the telephone call. It was so exciting being involved in her life. But the phone still had to be switched. Kate’s family made sure that it did happen. They had to approve of Michael first. It didn’t take too long and Michael was exposed to their kind of life on the ranch. It wasn’t all smooth sailing though. Michael had a little soul searching to do. Kate had opened up his world. To her detriment?

    CHAPTER 1

Who is this? This is Michael. Michael we somehow switched phones. You have my phone? Kate chuckled. Didn’t you realize? Good heavens, no! I have just landed. How on earth do I have your phone? Must have been when you were somewhere at the airport. But I didn’t put it down. Not for a second. Must have. Now that I think about it. In the pub. I put it down for a second. Were you in the pub? For two seconds. It was the only place I could find that had a vacant seat and I could have a cup of coffee. Michael shook his head. How are we going to do this? Where are you? About four hours’ drive from the airport. Right. Meaning you had landed or you were flying out. Flying out. Right. It was quiet for a while. What if I post it to you and you post mine to me? Michael shook his head and smiled as he spoke. He knew who he was talking to. No that is not going to work. I can’t be without my phone not even for a day. Kate smiled.

Hold on. You have a call coming in. Michael waited. Michael’s phone. Whoa! Can I speak to Michael please. Kate smiled as she spoke. I can relay a message to him. Can he phone you back? Tell him to call Matthew please. Sure. And who is this? Kate. Uhu. And who is Kate? Kate chuckled. I will get him to ring you Matthew. Matthew grinned. Thanks. Michael are you still there? Am indeed. Can you please phone Matthew. Right. Kid brother. What did he say? Not a lot. I said you would give him a call. Right. Can you give me his number? Kate chuckled. Okay, for the time being I am going to send all your numbers to you. Somehow. Would you do the same for me please? Sure. Hold on. There is a call coming through.

Kate shook her head. Kate’s phone. Kate! Uhm. No. Can I get her to ring you? Yeah. Ask her to phone Trevor. Right. Kate you there? Waiting. Right. Please call Trevor. Thanks. Who is Trevor? Kate chuckled. My Sensei. You do karate? Sure do. Michael nodded. Why does he want you? Probably wants me to stand in for him. His wife is due. Right. As in he is married. Very married. This is their first baby. Right. Michael. Yes. Oh heck. Another call. Michael’s phone. Michael this is your mother! Where on earth are you? We have walked this entire airport! Kate grinned. Hold on please. Michael? Yes? Where in the airport are you? Your mother can’t find you. I am standing at the Coke vending machine. She can’t miss me. Hold on. She pressed the button. Michael is standing at the Coke vending machine. Can you see it? Oh wonderful! I see him! Michael! Kate giggled. Michael tell your Mum to cut her call. Right. Mum. Cut your call. Michael? Right here. I am going to cut you off. Right. Sorry, I missed your name. Kate chuckled. Kate. Nice meeting you Kate. Likewise Michael. She cut her call.

Kate smiled as she held the phone. She knew who she was speaking to. She closed her eyes and sighed. She scrolled through all his contact numbers. Every number had every detail. Full names and surnames. She smiled. Her phone was the same. She scrolled through his photographs. There were photographs of women. She looked closely. There were two women that were in all the photographs. She smiled as she looked at a photograph of what she thought would be his Mum and Dad. And then another which was of Matthew. She thought. There wasn’t one of Michael himself. She smiled and tried to remember what photographs were on her phone. There were photographs of her brothers, her Mum and Dad, and one of herself. She groaned and covered her face. There were three photographs of herself dressed in underwear. One from the back. One from the front and one from the side. She let out a loud groan.

She picked up the phone and dialed. Michael. Sweetheart. No. This is Kate again. Right. Please. Do me one favor. Sure. Don’t look at my photographs. Whatever you do. Do not look at my photographs. I won’t. Promise me. I won’t. Thanks. She cut her call.

Michael smiled. Mum! She smiled. A lovely young lady answered your phone. Now where is she? She had the most delightful voice I have ever heard. She sounds like a bubble of fun! Michael smiled. She is the most delightful young lady. She is gorgeous. She has this out of this world figure. And she has long slender fingers. And she has this mop of curls. Gorgeous! So where is she? Michael roared with laughter. Not with me. But where? He smiled. No questions. Mabel shook her head and smiled. It is so good to see you.

Kate sat and compiled an SMS. She sent it to every single contact in his mailbox that had his surname. Please send me an SMS with your name and surname. There is something wrong with my phone. Michael. She punched in her cell number and sent it off. Michael looked at her phone as the SMS came through. Clever girl. Mabel smiled. Kate sent another SMS to Michael with a list of the people she had sent an SMS to. Mabel looked at Michael as he read his SMS. Michael you need to explain. He smiled. Mum. I switched phones with her. I didn’t get a chance to talk to her. Her phone is identical to mine and it was lying there. So I switched phones. You did what? Michael grinned. I finally met the woman of my dreams. The pub was full. My flight was called. So I switched phones. She shook her head. At the airport? He nodded. But this is home. He nodded and smiled. I saw her boarding pass. I know where she flew to. Mabel shook her head and looked at Michael.

And where is everyone? He grinned as everyone came walking towards them. Matthew grinned. Hey Michael! Michael smiled and nodded. Hey, where is Kate? Michael roared with laughter. Not here. Pity. So where is Kate? More like it. Who is Kate? Michael smiled. Kate is at home with my phone. Matthew grinned. The family all looked at their phones as an SMS went off. Sue grinned. So now you have a new cell phone number. Since when? Michael smiled and looked at Mabel. Since Kate and I switched phones. Sue nodded. Now why did you switch phones? Mabel shook her head. Long story. Michael chuckled and nodded. Clive walked over. Finally! Hey Dad! Michael hugged Clive. Good to see you again! Michael nodded. Good to be home.

Michael smiled as his phone went off. Doctor Michigan? Hold on a second. He dialed Kate. Michael? Hold on a sec. Who is Doctor Michigan? Me. Right. Hold on. Who shall I say is calling? This is Adolf. Vera is in labor. Now. What must we do? Hold on. Kate? Vera is in labor. Where is Adolf? Hold. Adolf. Where are you? The ravine. The second one. What must I do? I don’t know what to do. Hold. Everyone smiled as they watched Michael switching between calls. Kate. The ravine. The second one. Michael just keep us on the line. I am running and then I am switching you on to speaker phone. Right. Adolf. Hang in there. I think she is on her way. Michael. You need to get me on another phone. You can’t keep putting him on hold. Right. He cut his call. Adolf you still there? Yes. Just keep holding. Michael looked at Matthew. Matthew dial my cell number. Matthew nodded and dialed. Right Michael. Exactly where are they? Matthew spoke. I can’t hear you. What is that noise? Rotors. I am in my chopper. You are on the speaker phone. Okay. Michael is that you? It is Matthew. He is pacifying Adolf. Okay. Direct me. Matthew nodded. Directions? Michael listened. Down at the bottom.

Okay. Tell Adolf I am picking them up. ETA three minutes. Three minutes Michael. Three minutes Adolf. Can you hear the chopper? I hear her. I see them. Matthew tell him to get her on the stretcher that I am going to lower down and to hop on and lie over her. I can’t leave him. Michael. Adolf must load her on the stretcher and get on. We can’t leave him. He needs to balance the stretcher. Adolf. Load Vera and get on top of her. But hang on! She is here. Matthew the stretcher is going down. Matthew nodded and showed the actions. Michael nodded and spoke to Adolf. Get in and cover your wife with your body. Talk to me Matthew. I can’t see. I am getting cross winds here. They need to move it! Hurry Michael! Adolf are you in? We are in! Michael nodded. Hold on! Wedge your feet in the sides. Matthew nodded as he watched Michael. Raise the stretcher. Please, Adolf needs to be the eyes and ears. I can’t see them. Michael tell us when he is out of the ravine. Michael nodded. Adolf let me know when you are high out of the ravine.

Michael listened and watched Matthew. Okay. They are above the ravine. Kate they are above the ravine. Okay. I am going to fly across and then I am going to hover and lower the stretcher. Tell him to yell when he is about a meter off the ground. He cannot touch the ground. Matthew listened. Michael. I heard. Adolf when you are a meter off the ground yell! Michael listened. One meter! Matthew yelled. One meter! Tell Adolf to slide off and hold the stretcher. Michael nodded. Adolf. Slide off and hold the stretcher. Doing that. Michigan to base. Can you see me? Michigan to base. Can you see me? They all looked at the phone which Matthew had put on to speaker phone. Michigan to base. I need you. Can you see me? No co-Pilot today. Base. Come in. Michigan to base. Got you Katie. They all heard the Sirens. Stand by to assist. Dad that you? He chuckled. Trig and Keith are undoing the cables. Kate where is your co? No time. He was. Detained. Douglas roared with laughter. You left him in the John? Kate roared with laughter. No time! He chuckled. Okay. Adolf and Vera are fine. Loaded in the ambulance. You can pull in the chord. She will probably deliver on the way to the hospital. Thanks Dad. Michigan signing out. I will be there in five Dad. If I can make it get them to pull over and I will deliver Vera’s baby. Douglas chuckled. Hey kiddo. You home for supper? Kate giggled. Yeah Dad! Nice to have you home sweetheart.

Michael chuckled. Adolf you okay? Thanks. Vera is in the ambulance with me. Doctor Michigan will probably meet us there. Thank you. My pleasure. Kate smiled. Matthew. Thanks. I have to sign off. Michigan to base. All clear? Matthew waited and smiled. Cool banana! Thanks Walter. Landed. Switching off. Matthew smiled as he waited. Michigan to control. The bird she nests. Over and out. Matthew grinned. They all listened and smiled. Matthew. Going to be cutting you off. Thank you. My pleasure Doctor Michigan. Michael smiled. Adolf. How is Vera doing? Pushing! She can’t push! We are stopping. Everyone listened. Doctor Michigan? They heard the door of the ambulance slamming. Yeah! Hey Vera. How you doing kiddo? They heard the mumbles. Matthew pointed to the chairs and everyone moved over and took a seat. Michael smiled as they all listened. They listened as Kate gave instructions to Vera. They all sat and listened and waited. One more push Vera. One more. Adolf. You okay? She is coming. We see her head. Everyone smiled. They heard the little cry. Mabel sighed and smiled. Clive smiled and hugged her. Congratulations Adolf. Your daughter has arrived. Well done Vera! Michael smiled as he listened. Congratulations Adolf. Thank you! Adolf. Cut the call. Bye bye Mister Assistor. Thank you. Michael smiled. My pleasure. He cut his call and smiled and shook his head.

They all looked at Michael. Clive roared with laughter. Who is this Doctor Kate Michigan? Michael smiled. I didn’t know she was a Doctor. I didn’t know she was a Pilot. I don’t know where she is. But I bumped in to her at the airport. We switched phones. Sue giggled. And you are head over heels in love. We can see it in your face Michael. Michael nodded. Yes. Mabel nodded and smiled. Well. This has been the most exhilarating morning I have ever had. Michael chuckled. He looked at his phone as it rang. Michael speaking. Kate. Dad here. Are you done? She is Sir. Where is Kate? Michael smiled. We switched phones by mistake. I see. It was quiet for a while. Now how do I get hold of my Katie? I will send an SMS to everyone. You do that son. Now where is Kate? In the ambulance. She just delivered Vera’s baby. She arrived? Michael chuckled. With a yelp! Douglas roared with laughter. Excellent. Thank you son. Michael smiled. My pleasure. He cut the call.

Matthew smiled. You don’t want to send that SMS. Do you? You are scared that if you do send that SMS then you lose contact with Doctor Michigan. Michael chuckled and nodded. But I have to. They all nodded. Michael composed the SMS. Good Lord! There are over five hundred numbers on here. I hope I am not shaking or waking the dead. Matthew smiled as he looked at the message. Did she look married, dating or single? Michael smiled. Very single. He answered the phone as it rang. Hey there Doctor Michigan! Darling I have just got some lovely shots from Ethel. And I saw a stunning one of you. I have just sent it via SMS. And I sent it as an attachment. I think. Now let me know once it arrives. Are you home tonight? I haven’t spoken to Dad yet. Michael smiled. Mrs. Michigan. Heavens! That is not you Katie! Michael chuckled. No, Kate has my phone. I have hers.

Rose giggled. Oh she is not going to be impressed. Does she know? She does. I am sending out an SMS to let everyone know. Oh my! Michael chuckled. Does she have that many friends? Heavens no! Now the numbers to use are only Mum, Dad, Keith, Walter and Kenneth, and Trigonometry. Trigonometry? Long story! Michael roared with laughter. Is that a subject or a name? Her biggest brother. I will explain one day. Michael chuckled. That SMS has just come through. Now. When you get the SMS you will know it is from me. Excellent! By the way. Who are you? Your future son in law Ma’am! Rose gurgled with laughter. And you go by the name of? Michael. Michael Logan. Nice to meet you Michael. Michael chuckled. Nice to meet you Ma’am. Are you going to tame my wild child? Michael grinned. She needs taming? Have you seen her lately? Michael roared with laughter. This morning. Rose chuckled. Signing out Michael. Signing out Ma’am. He cut his call.

Michael looked at everyone. I think we need a round of coffee. My treat. Let’s head for the coffee shop. Sue and Destiny grinned as they all walked to the coffee shop. They all took a seat. Michael looked at everyone. He looked down at the phone and sighed as he opened the SMS and looked at the photograph. Everyone gathered around and looked over his shoulder. Destiny gasped. Oh she is gorgeous! Look at her! Sue gasped. She has beautiful hair! Michael smiled and looked at the photograph. You know when a photograph is totally different. They all nodded. He shook his head. Kate looks exactly like that. Her eyes smile. She has naughty eyes. She is beautiful. Clive nodded. She is. Michael nodded. He smiled and sighed. I wonder where she is. Sounds as if she is out at a game reserve or something. They all nodded.

They all placed their order for coffee. Mabel smiled. How was your trip? Michael nodded. Good. Everything is in place. I won’t need to spend that amount of time at the office anymore. I have a good management team. Now I will go for quarterly meetings but I will get my daily reports from the different guys. They all nodded and smiled. Michael had been away for two weeks. They all drank their coffee and Michael paid the bill. They all got up. Matthew smiled as he pushed Michael’s trolley with his luggage. Michael followed. He was very quiet. Clive smiled. And what about Lucinda? Michael shook his head and slowed down. There is no spark Dad. Clive nodded. Are you going to break it off with her? I have. Dad we weren’t dating. Just a platonic friendship. Clive nodded. Michael you can’t get physical with a woman and then suddenly break it off.

Michael stopped and let the family walk off. He looked at Clive. Okay. I have not been physical with her at all. I haven’t been physical with any of them. Clive looked at Michael. Not one of them? Michael shook his head. He almost whispered. Dad I have never slept with anyone. Never?
