I'm a native Arizonan and while growing up, I would often write down notes about stories germinating in my head. I was always interested in the fantasy genre, having been introduced to Anne McCaffrey's Riders of Pern book series (may she rest in peace) in elementary school. I devoured Piers Anthony, Raymond E. Feist, and later, Lord of the Rings. In trying my hand at mysteries, I've found they are fickle things, like a knot in yarn. Instead of cutting it, try to work it out and once unraveled, have a straight line of yarn again. I will some more books coming soon, so please enjoy the ones I have out now. Prologue
England, 1884
Marie, wait! Marie!
His voice echoed through the darkness. Marie ran as fast as she could, clutching the baby to her chest, panting through the pain in her side. She heard the cry of her vampire lover behind her, praying that he wouldn’t follow her into the forest. It wasn’t safe. There were werewolves there.
Marie!
His voice sounded closer, more high-pitched, fearful. Marie ran on, crossing the sloping meadow past the threshold of the forest. The boundaries of the werewolf territory. She paused, panting heavily by an old oak, her eyes changing colors rapidly. Her light purple Victorian dress was stained with dirt and grass, torn from her flight. The baby girl in her arms was calm, oblivious to her mother’s plight. Marie gasped as she heard soft footfalls behind her. The scent of the forest gave way to something more feral.
Marie felt calloused hands on her shoulder and relaxed under the familiar touch. She knew it was Henry, alpha male of the werewolf pack, in human form. She didn’t have to wonder where his pack was. They were there behind him, hissing and snarling as the vampire got closer.
He stopped at the threshold of the forest, his golden eyes taking in the scene: Marie standing there watching him, with a werewolf pack behind her, the alpha male’s hands on her shoulders. His eyes met hers, watching them rapidly change from blue to green to gold, matching his.
Why?
the question came out in a snarl.
You know why, Morgan.
Marie said quietly, turning away. Henry put an arm around her shoulder. Morgan watched them head into the forest, knowing that she was on werewolf territory now. He was helpless to follow.
"Marie!"
Marie heard his cry echo, making the child squirm in her arms. The little girl’s eyes changed rapidly as well. Marie changed her eye color to blue, watching the girl’s eyes do the same. Don’t worry, little one. We’re safe now.
She crooned to her daughter.
Chapter 1
Present Day
Amy Farroway tapped her feet and fidgeted nervously with her iPod as she waited for the announcement to board. She was dressed in a dark blue tank top and ratty denim shorts that were high on her thigh. She was seventeen going on eighteen, now a ward of the state. Her parents had died in a car crash when a truck ran a red light and slammed into them, wrapping the car around a pole.
Seeing that she had no other relatives living in the States, the judge had ordered her to go to her Uncle Albert’s house in England, her only living relative. She had never been to England before, but heard about it in her Uncle Albert’s letters. He was a retired professor and he would guest lecture at universities and colleges. The work took him all over the countryside.
Amy stiffened when she heard the announcement. Grabbing her small suitcase, her only carryon, she dashed to the gate, ignoring the leering looks she got from a group of teenage boys. She handed her ticket to the female agent who smiled and wished her to have a great flight. All Amy could do was say, Thank you.
It would be a one-way trip. Most of her parents’ things were already shipped over, Uncle Albert paying the bill. Now, Amy was the last thing to be shipped.
The plane took off, and Amy’s stomach churned. Staring down at the blue water churning below the plane, Amy wondered what would happen if the plane went
