About this ebook

Dreamers and Deviants is a series of short stories with two arcs. The first being TK Charles' struggle to transition from a meathead Division One jock to write and publish a novel. During time spent reflecting on the present he works through personal issues like meeting women and scrounging for food and income.

The second arc revolves around memories spurned by his observations of everyday life. These memories include stories from his years working for Fortune 500 companies, running at a major Division One university and past love and heartbreak.

Dreamers and Deviants is an apt title as TK Charles and his crew living at "The Compound" struggle with their life paths. They debate whether to continue their banking, teaching and engineering jobs and shuffle along with the queue of The American Dream or throw it all away to pursue their personal dreams of developing iPhone apps, writing novels and becoming photographers. The stories will be released every two weeks on a Monday in groups of three or four.

Dreamers and Deviants - The Second Three consist of stories about TK's move to Miami after graduation, his return to Des Moines and his dependency on drugs and alcohol to survive his budding corporate career. He eventually quits it all in the final story and moves to New Zealand to pursue his passion of writing. It begins, though, with a mind opening trip that TK didn't see coming. The trip allowed him to see the next progression to his writing and revealed some valuable personal demons and saints along the way.

Watch for The Third Three of Dreamers and Deviants to be released on August 26, 2013.

    A Trembling Mind

    A Trip Unplanned

Blinking cursor. Fingers frozen. Pencil, pad. Where has my mind wandered to? Lost in the void of the tube. Where must I travel to find it? The dream. The dream! I must bike.

Dribble from my frustrated, food poisoned mind just after midnight this past evening.

I SHOUTED names of items – chicken breast, frozen veggies, ice cream, coconut shavings and tubs of ice cream – to Tony, hoping to find something we could eat. He was waiting on a check from the GI Bill and I was waiting on the stock market to decline so I could sell my market shorts. (For those of you who didn’t spend two miserable years chasing the stock that would set you up for life, market shorts are stocks that go up when the market goes down. A vast majority of my savings are tied up in them and once I can sell without taking too massive of a hit I will and I’ll be able to pay for rent and food at least for a month. In the interim I starve.) With the front staples of the freezer removed I found a loaf of cinnamon bread, expiration date: two years ago. It had frozen in a near perfect V. I decided, without consulting Tony, that it was free to eat. I dropped it in the sink and continued my search. Beside the bread was a slushy bottle of three dollar merlot I had hid days before. I dropped it in the sink as well and flipped on the warm tap to thaw our growing meal. The only items left were a couple frosty grocery bags and receipts and two crusty ice trays. I checked the grocery bags – one had a nearly empty Peter Pan jar, which I chucked in with the bread. I filled the ice trays and found a half wrapped, bumpy nougat of chocolate which I contemplated and popped in my mouth. I tore off the left half of the cinnamon loaf so it took on a more normal appearance and stuck it in the microwave. I dug a spoon from the sink and scrubbed it with my thumb and plunged it into the hardened peanut butter jar. I scrapped as much as I could and spread it on the hot bread. I continued this routine until my half of the bread was gone and the jar was empty. I popped the bottle of wine and warmed the other half and walked it to the living room to Tony and Broz as the hero.

    What’s this? Broz asked suspiciously.

Cinnamon loaf. Expired a year ago. Should be aight. Was frozen, I said, not wanting to interrupt the program they were stuck to.

I’m in no position to decline, He tore off a chunk, dropping it hand to hand as the cinnamon goo scalded and stuck to his palms.

Tony took the remainder. I sat sipping wine. We watched Real World. A girl was running around the house false cracking her roommates because they forbade her from playing with their dog. I suddenly seemed to judge the television with intense scrutiny. As the woman’s behavior grew more outlandish Broz switched from Real World to a late night show. I finished my wine and regarded the new programming with similar distaste. A large woman told joked about dating a Cuban-American. He wanted to trade a bite of her chicken enchilada with his quesadilla. The punch line was that she, being a true American, couldn’t trade with his people because of the embargo on Cuba. The guys laughed. They laughed harder as she elaborated. Eventually their jaws came unhinged from all the laughing and their chins rested on their knees. I suddenly felt an extreme animosity
