Haunted III - Willow Cross
Prologue
When we left the dream home and moved to Arkansas, I’d mistakenly believed myself finally free of ghostly manifestations, strange knocks, weird noises, and disappearing objects. After so many years of living with spirits I’d become quite attuned to their ‘frequency’ for lack of a better term. I’m not sure how to explain it in better terms, but I’ll give it a go.
When I’m in a haunted location I get the normal goose bumps, feelings of dread or sorrow, and also an inexplicable feeling of surging electricity. I can’t see or hear it, but it feels like the actual air around me is buzzing. The sensation is akin to the one many folks have just before the onset of a tremendous thunderstorm. The hair on the back of my neck and arms will rise and I just ‘know’ there’s something there.
Now, being used to these sensations, I’ve honed this instinct into a warning system of sorts. And I’ve learned to utilize it when the necessity arises. Moving into a new home was just that sort of necessity.
A month before our move, we came down to look at rental properties and finalize my husband’s transfer to his new job. I rented the first and only house we looked at. Of course that sounds ridiculous, but I had list and this house qualified on every item needed. Number one on that list was: Not Haunted. Seriously.
Knowing my idiosyncrasies, my husband didn’t even flinch when I asked to him get the landlord outside so I could walk the house alone. He knew what I wanted to do. As they chatted in the driveway, I walked through every room and into every last closet. In each I’d stand quietly, close my eyes, and take in the ambiance of the space, waiting for those ‘sensations’ to stir up. Nothing. Not one blessed goose bump. No rising hair follicles and no electricity, just a calm sense of peace.
The house was a wreck. Seriously dirty, still had the previous tenant’s belongings strewn about, and in need a massive overhaul. And guess what? I wrote the landlord a check that day to secure the property. He assured me that things would be neat and tidy on move in day and that was good enough for me. I was sad to be leaving my dream home, but at the same time, elated to be free of the supernatural elements which had been disrupting my life for so many years.
The actual move was clean, quick, and relatively easy. We settled in, the kids started their new schools, and I got to know some of the neighborhood moms. I did a smidge of research on
