About this ebook

"Seeing the great darkness within the elven prince's heart, the High God cursed his descendants with a thirst for blood..."

A century has passed since the vampire race settled in the arctic north. It seems all is well for Druthor the Great, King of the Vampires, sitting uncontested on the Crimson Throne, when an iron sorceress arrives from the southlands. With her tales of war and tumult, she brings memories of what Druthor does not have: a national heirloom, an ancestral treasure, Lifedrinker, the ancient blade of the vampires. But recovering it will prove more dangerous than any could possibly imagine.

A novella.

    CHAPTER ONE:

    Iron Woman

A corrupting wind blew from the south into the northernmost reaches. In its wake, the edges of swords filmed over with rust, the ploughs of the coastland druen became useless, and the air tinged with the smell of a strange metal. When at last the wind reached the mouth of the Black River, a ship appeared in the horizon: a giant tortoise-like craft with many sails, obviously from far away. And when it reached the harbor, a woman arrived: black-haired, dark-eyed, and pale as all the druen around her. She clutched a staff in her ivory hands, and she called herself the Iron Sorceress.

Druthor the Great, King of the Vampires

King Druthor sat as he always did on the Crimson Throne, in the midst of the black-bricked walls of the royal castle. When a servant pushed open the great wooden doors of the throne room, interrupting him without warning, his teeth protracted and he stood up, having half a mind to drink him dry right then, right there.

Your Worship! he shouted. There is an intruder. She says she comes from the southlands, from Londor! She wants to have an audience with you. She has something she wants to give you!

Send the Red Guard to kill her, Druthor hissed. How dare this servant bother me? He inched closer.

The Red Guard tried, Your Worship. The woman bent their swords into useless clubs. It seems she has power over metal. She is a wizar—

"Silence! Druthor hissed. There were spears in the throne room. If he spoke again he’d hurl one. I will hear her out."

The servant bobbed his head and disappeared through the throne room doors, knowing full well what danger he was in.

Who are you? Druthor hissed when the woman showed her face.

If her features were a trifle more predatory, her movements a trifle more catlike, she could easily pass as a druen. Blue-gray eyes stared intensely into Druthor’s. Red lips stood out starkly against her bloodless face. An ash-gray robe fell to her feet, and a silver rope belt clung tight to her waste. In her hand was a staff of dark wood. I am Liandré, Sorceress of the Iron Coven. I come from the Iron Isle, and I bring goodwill from his majesty King Aimon the Second.

What do you want, witch? Druthor hissed. Unprotected as he was, he knew how unwise attacking her would be. Speak!

His majesty King Aimon is engaged in a war with the westerners. Danarion, the City of Light, lies unprotected. While our armies fight at the border, you have an opportunity to destroy the do-gooders once and for all. The Lamen have been your ancient foe ever since your ancestor Prince Gilden—

Do not talk of him, Druthor hissed. You know nothing of him.

For a second, the Iron Sorceress looked afraid. But whatever glimmer of fear there was in her eyes quickly evaporated. Ah, druen-king. I apologize if I spoke too rashly. You see, there is something in the City of Light you may want…

Lies, Druthor hissed again. There is nothing. The only thing I want is the Lamen’s blood.

"And you will get it. But you
