Chapter 1
Major Robert Mckenzie sat there tensely outside of the General’s office waiting. He had no idea why he had been summoned to the General’s office; he was actually feeling a little nervous, trying hard to not shuffle too much in his seat. His khaki greens on, standard issue black boots, smartly dressed to the military standard. It was not often that he felt nervous; he was a stern type of character with a strong resolve and strong mentally. He had just finished the boot camp for SAS training. It was something he volunteered for after hearing about a new Special Forces type of unit that was being formed in his old regiment. It was the excitement of it and his sense of adventure that led him to volunteering. The year was 1942 and Major Mckenzie had been in the British Army for eight years now, first enlisting to attend Sandhurst College to be an infantry officer in 1934 when he was just nineteen years old. He was a high achiever at Sandhurst, winning the recruit of the intake award beating over 100 other recruits to achieve the award. Ever since he was a kid he had always wanted to be in the Army, it was adventure that appealed to him. He had always been the adventurous type growing up, athletic and a good sportsman, and he was patriotic so joining the Army was perfect for him. Hailing from an upper class family made it easier in being accepted into the prestigious Sandhurst Academy. Robert earned his promotion to Captain in 1938, earning his first deployment for active service at the end of 1939 to France in anticipation of the eventually successful Nazi German invasion of France in 1940. He saw sporadic bits of action in 1940 before he and the rest of the British Expeditionary Force were evacuated back to Britain at Dunkirk to prepare for the German invasion of Britain, which never happened. He received his promotion to Major at the beginning of 1941 but remained stationed in Britain for the remainder of that year. However, at the beginning of 1942 there were calls being made for volunteers to join a new special forces regiment which had just been formed called the SAS. All he really knew at that stage was that their missions would be behind enemy lines, conducting sabotage operations against the enemy. He loved the idea and the thought of the action so he wasted no time in volunteering for the unit. He had been sitting around stationary for almost two years and was keen to see some real action again. He passed the boot camp for this new special forces unit, which was far more rigorous and intense than his previous military training, and he now found himself sitting out the front of the General’s office at the SAS training facility. He had been sitting outside the General’s office for about ten minutes and finally the door to his office opened.
Major, come on in,
said General Bates as he opened the door.
Mckenzie walked in to see one other man sitting behind the General’s desk.
Sit down Major,
General Bates ordered.
Mckenzie took a seat and waited in anticipation as to why he’d been called to the General’s office.
This is Major Ball from MI6. I guess you’re probably wondering why you’ve been called in here today.
Yes, sir, I am.
Mckenzie held his back and shoulders up straight, his tone confident.
Major Ball, you wanna take it from here.
said Bates, turning to look at Major Ball.
As I’m sure your aware Major, the Japanese have invaded and conquered most of South East Asia. As it stands, it is a very real threat that Burma may fall to them as well, and if Burma falls then it means that India will be next on the list of countries the Japanese invade.
General Bates chimed in again appraising Mckenzie’s training performance.
I’ve just been evaluating your performance of this training cycle here with Major Ball. You performed better than any of the other officer’s here, you’ve got real skills and talent Major, and Major Ball here believes you’ve got the necessary qualities for some new missions they’re looking at undertaking.
I’m gonna cut to the chase,
said Ball, moving his upper body forward in his seat, his eyes fixed intently on Mckenzie. We need officers and soldiers that have what it takes to go behind enemy lines in Burma to disrupt the flow of the Japanese advance. You, seeing as you’ve performed so well here will be in command of your own small team of the finest soldiers we can muster to conduct these operations. These saboteur missions will be of vital importance in our efforts to quell the Japanese invasion into Burma and the rest of the subcontinent. However, this is only if you accept the offer. If you don’t want to do this then we never had this conversation, you don’t mention this to anyone and that includes your family.
Major Ball turned a crooked edge of his face to Mckenzie.
I’m in.
Mckenzie said, not even needing to think about the offer.
Major Ball looked at Mckenzie impassively at his quick fire
