    Chapter 1 – Briar

    ~Freedom~

The girls are in front of the mirror primping for our night out; I’m already finished. I slipped myself into the shortest, most form fitting dress I could find. Metallic silver, cut so high I know if I bend over everyone will get a perfect view of my lacy cut boy shorts. A deep v-neck shows my tiny chest; it’s not flat, but I’m definitely not spilling over the cup in that department. There’s also a v-shape cut down my back that flashes a plethora of my creamy white skin. I matched it with hot pink, four inch pumps that are killer on the feet, but add some oomph to my already long legs. Neither is my normal style, but tonight is special so I bought them both with Daddy’s credit card while out shopping today. I needed something that would fit with what tonight means to me and knew my normal wardrobe of tea length dresses and reasonable heels wouldn’t cut it. If Daddy saw this outfit, he’d never approve. Not because of the obscene price tags– for a normal person, what I paid could buy them a decent car. No, he wouldn’t approve because it would never be what he’d consider appropriate for his princess. But tonight, he’s not here to control me. Tonight’s my night to let loose and try to find out who is the real Briar Rose Roberts.

Champagne? A full glass is pushed into my hand by my best friend, Ruby Winters. I turn to give her my full attention, and so I can get a look at her attire for the night. Ruby lives up to her name; she’s fiery and for as long as I’ve known her, which is since junior high, she always has been. From her flaming red hair that’s straightened and hanging loose down her back, to the painted on deep red dress that covers her. It’s as short as my own, if not shorter (though I don’t know how that’s possible without being considered a top). One arm is bare, but the other has a long sleeve. The top cuts across her chest at an angle towards her sleeveless side where there are cutouts almost to the hem. There is no way she can wear underwear with it, so I pray she doesn’t have to bend over at any point tonight.

What are you going to do if you drop something? I ask after taking a sip of the champagne.

Bend over and get it. She answers right away.

But everyone will see…well, your everything. I say, finishing in a hushed voice. Have I mentioned how naïve I am? It’s one of the drawbacks from being completely sheltered by a controlling father.

That’s the point. She grins and then lifts her own glass to her lips to take a sip. At that point, I have no clue what to say. How do you respond when your best friend tells you she knows she’s going to flash her goodies to everyone within view? More power to you just doesn’t seem like the right response, but I don’t want to come off as prudish either. Best to just take another drink from my glass and watch the lights of the Vegas strip.

Why are you going through with this? Ruby asks quietly so the other girls in the suite can’t hear. I don’t take my eyes off the strip as I answer.

Because I love him. I’ve been practicing saying those words so long that they almost come off believable. Almost. Ruby, of course, knowing me better than anyone else, knows better. She snorts at my response, spewing a little bit of her drink on the window in front of her. Not very ladylike, but Ruby’s never claimed to be.

Bullshit! She does a hushed scream, so once again the other girls won’t hear. If you haven’t picked up by now let me tell you, I’m not that close to the other girls like I am with Ruby. I get along with them, but I get along with just about everybody. The only reason I spend time with them is because they’re Daddy approved. He doesn’t approve of Ruby. She is the one thing in my life I don’t let him control. And he hates it.

Ruby, not now. I plead because I see the other girls, through the windows reflection, making their way to us. I put on my best smile and spin on my heels to greet them.

Through her own forced smile, Ruby replies quickly before the other girls reach us. This conversation isn’t over. I don’t respond. I don’t want to because I flat out do not want to continue this conversation. I’d rather pull out my own perfectly straight teeth with pliers.

Ready to get this night started? Anna asks, throwing her hands up in the air and wiggling her hips. She and the other two, Haley and Lynn, are dressed just as skimpy as Ruby and me. But unlike me, they’re use to dressing this way. The only reason my father approves of them is because they hide this side from him, while Ruby never hides who she truly is. I love that about her and secretly wish I could be more like her. She knows who she really is and is proud of it.

I down the last of my drink, knowing I’ll need it to make it through this night without shying away to hide in some corner. Bringing the now empty glass back from my lips, I smile again, genuinely this time, and answer. Now I’m ready. The girls all whoop and squeal with excitement. They’ve all been looking forward to this, my celebration of freedom. Not because they see it the same way as I do, but because to them (Ruby not included) it’s just another girls’ night out footed by someone else. To me, it’s my first taste of freedom and my last.

The girls decide to hit up the club at the hotel first. We dance, we drink, and they talk to some guys. But within a few hours, they’re ready to move on. Since we’re staying in one of the hottest hotels on the strip, in one of the most expensive villas the place has to offer, we have access to a top of the line limo as an amenity. So we call for it and head out on the town.

The first location takes me by surprise. I didn’t plan this night. I left it all up to Ruby, seeing as she’s more experienced with having a good time, but I never expected her to bring me here. Half of me (the more subdued, Daddy’s princess) wants to flat out refuse to go in, but the other half of me (my inner wild child that’s making her first appearance, ever!) wants to see what this place has to offer. I put the uptight Daddy’s princess in a corner for the night and follow my wild child inside.

The place is mostly dark except for the low lights around the bar and seating area. Most of the light is focused on the stage, but I’m trying to avoid looking that way until I can get some liquid courage in
