There are questions at the end of each section called Reflections. These can be used for discussion should this book be used in a small group for a Bible study. The questions tend to be more introspective for personal evaluation, however can also be the springboard that will encourage lively discussion and fellowship, as well as strengthen the believer’s faith.
Though this work is scholarly, it is not academic. It is designed for you to experience a deeper understanding of Scripture as well as a more intimate relationship with the Lord. Abiding With The Almighty Through Psalm Ninety-One - Karen Faire
HE."
Psalm Ninety-One
Verse 1 Part 1
He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will abide in the shadow of the Almighty.
Think of the most safe, unassailable place where nothing and no one can harm you. Is it light or dark, stuffy or fresh? Do you hear water dripping somewhere, like in a dungeon? Are you surrounded by a vault of concrete or stone? Are you in a bunker, deep underground or on the highest mountain peak? Is there an echo? All earthly places crumble, need repair and quite frankly, if you could get in, then someone else could as well! There is truly no safe place on this earth and we will never feel safe enough!
When I was a little girl, I lived with my grandparents for a year. I was two years old and my favorite place was in my grandfather’s lap. The poor man could hardly sit down before I was there. That was my place and I felt safe there. It was a sad day when I grew too big to sit in his lap and had to sit all the way across the room on the sofa.
As God’s children, we will never outgrow our need to sit on our Father’s lap.
We will always be His children, His little boys and girls and we will always be welcome wherever He is!
In the first verse, the word dwells
basic meaning is, to sit, settle, dwell or reside.
The Most High has invited you to sit, settle and make yourself at home with Him. The language has the idea of spending the night. This is your permanent home as a believer. The God of the universe has prepared a place for you in His Holy Presence and Christ died to give you access to God and to give God access to your own being by His Holy Spirit.
Today, as you seek the Lord, imagine yourself as a small child again and ask the Lord Most High to show you your place with Him. Ask Him to lift you into His lap and to wrap His loving arms around you. Now stay there. Don’t move and don’t leave His Presence. Just remain and rest. Be still and relax. Rest in His arms and enjoy His Presence. You are home in His heart. This is what being at home with God feels like: safe, secure, relief, peace, trust, rest, beyond time, you can relax, be yourself and know you are loved.
When you sense that it is time to get up and go about your business, thank Him and ask Him to lead you through the day.
Mentally, remember what it felt like to rest in His arms. When you go to bed this evening, return and remain until you fall asleep. In this way we will learn to live with a constant awareness of God’s Presence in all hours of our lives.
Reflections:
Is it difficult for you to get in God’s Presence? Do you feel that it is presumptuous to approach Holy God? Why?
Pray and ask your Heavenly Father to call you back to Him whenever He wants. Give Him permission to interrupt your day with frequent sits
with Him.
Knowing you are welcomed and loved, how will you invite His Presence into your daily life?
If you had trouble getting there, (on God’s lap) or felt unwelcome, please pray and ask the Lord to show you what lie, what thought is holding you back (because you are invited and welcomed as His beloved). Read Hebrews 4:16 and 10:19-22.
Is the homeward path familiar to you or is the path homeward tangled with overgrowth from lack of use? If tangled, pray that the Lord will help you clear away all that is hindering you from getting to Him, for He longs to draw near to you. Read James 4:8.
How has your relationship with your earthly father helped or hindered your ability to feel comfortable in God’s Presence?
Heavenly Father, I want to know You more intimately. I want to trust You more and not be afraid! Help me to see You as my Loving Father and come to You for everything I need. May I find all that I long for in Your arms.
