    About the Author

I suppose I should introduce myself. My name is Mark (not Slim Shady) and I’m what you might call a serial job quitter! In the past sixteen years I’ve quit jobs to write a book, write a screenplay, take a career break, and twice to start companies.

After all of those attempts, I definitely know now what works and what doesn’t. I also know what YOU need to know in order to get it right first time and I’m happy to share that with you.

Quitting your job for a life filled with time, family, and just plain old stuff YOU want to do is something that’s seriously scary but that also fills me with excitement, and I just KNOW it does for you too. Or you wouldn’t have bought this book, now would you?

I’m the kind of person who likes to stop and smell the roses once in a while. Are you that sort of person? I thought so.

So I guess we’re not that different after all. Good, because that fills me with a large dose of optimism for your success.

I guess you could say I’m an optimist, but I’ve also got my feet planted firmly on the ground. Either way, I’m not shy of working seriously hard to achieve something, and to be honest, quitting your job and forging a path ahead on your own is going to require that!

I’m guessing you’re also someone who every now and then questions what it is that life has in store for you, because you’re definitely NOT happy with that daily commute or that dead end job you’ve found yourself in. Am I right?

There’s more of my story as you work your way through this book. It’s a tale filled with a lot of failure, but also a lot of learning, and with that knowledge, I’m here to help you cut corners to success!

So now you’ve met me, let’s focus in on…

Preface: Why you bought this book

Of course, I’m really very glad that you did! I’m guessing you did it because the title promises so much and you’re at the end of your tether. You feel like your life is dull, boring, out of control or just plain hectic, and you’ve decided that you want to change it. Furthermore, you’ve realised that working for a boss puts you in a position where you just never have enough time for the things that truly matter in your life. Maybe those things are your family, your social life, or your hobbies. Maybe you’ve always wanted to paint that great picture, write that great novel, or just travel the world!

Perhaps at the start of the weekend you sigh, relax, kick back with a drink and think Yeah I’m going to ENJOY this weekend. I’m going to do everything I’ve been dreaming about while on the train to work every morning this week. And then Monday morning’s alarm clock goes off, and as you stand under the shower and think, really think about what you achieved, you realise you just don’t have enough time to do everything you really want to.

The truth of it is that you’re not wrong. Just think how much time you spend at work, how much time you sleep, how much time you commute, and then work out just how few hours you have to actually cram everything else that matters in, and there’s your answer.

Out of the 24 hours we have each day, 8 are for sleeping, leaving 16. Out of the remaining 16, 9 (with a lunch hour) are for work, and maybe on average, another 1 to 2 hours are for commuting. That leaves you with just 5 or 6 hours per day where you can do what YOU need to do.

And with bills to pay, family and friends to socialise with, children or loved ones to look after, pets to feed, you name it, those 5 hours just dwindle away to nothing. So we need to look to the weekend; well how much time do we have there?

The problem is that everything that doesn’t get done in the evenings during the week gets shoved to the weekend: chores around the house, cleaning, washing, ironing, mowing the lawn, fixing the loose gutter on the roof, or tidying the shed.

I guess you know where I’m going with this. The days turn into weeks, and the weeks into months, and suddenly years later we take a moment to remember what we wanted to achieve years ago and beat ourselves up over the fact we never did it, whatever it was. In fact, if you’re like me, you’re probably scratching your head trying to remember what that thing was that excited you, that made you feel like you were really going to ACHIEVE something with your life. It’s gone and you’ll never get it back.

So what can you do about it? How do you Carpe the Diem? How do you chase that rainbow? Do you really have it within your control to figure things out and give yourself more time?

I’m betting yes, but it’s going to take some doing.
