About this ebook

Music has the power to heal.

Discovered while busking on the streets of Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside, Jessie Wheeler is now at the top of her game as a singer-songwriter and actor. Once a teen runaway from Prince Edward Island, Jessie is a broken soul who, despite her fame, still considers herself one of society’s throwaways. As a runaway she ended up in the clutches of Deuce McCall, a predator of vulnerable young women who developed a life-long fixation of the soulful young blue-eyed singer.

The darkness of Jessie’s teen years is echoed in poignant music and lyrics. She begins to awaken to the joys of life on the day her boyfriend Charlie proposes, when he kicks an estranged friend, actor Josh Sawyer, out of his Club. Josh is wasted, lost in a bottomless downward spiral, but Jessie sees something of herself reflected in Josh’s sorrowful chocolate brown eyes – a deep loneliness and angst. So she tells Josh there is always hope, and it’s enough for him to begin to believe in himself again.

When a part on Josh’s new television series Drifters becomes available, Jessie can’t resist the temptation. Through Drifters she gets to know the real Josh, which awakens her desire for sincere and true love. But she is engaged to Charlie, and the whole world awaits a Canadian Royal Wedding of sorts. The painful predicament comes to a head when Deuce McCall makes an appearance in the city.

Other characters include the lively cast of Drifters, and Charles and Deirdre Keating, Jessie’s Producer and Manager, who have come to love Jessie as the daughter they never had.

A Song For Josh is a simple, sweet story about hope and love. It explores the relationships between damaged souls, and is about the use of music as a means of communication when words simply fail. Through Josh and Jessie’s story we learn that we are all indeed lovable, even when we are quite certain we are not. Yet the book has a sinister edge – in this first novel of the Drifters series, Deuce McCall represents the ghastliness of warped love. Contrasted to that darkness is the exquisite beauty shared between two people who deeply love one another.
