    What's Next?

As Katelina Archer rode the crowded glass elevator to the top of the Seattle Space Needle, a broken camera strap in her hand and the $6.95 in her bank account not nearly enough to replace it, a familiar tingling grew at the base of her spine.

    He was here.

In a city of over half a million, at a landmark visited by twice that, on the very day she had lost her job and her apartment and her way in the world, the universe had granted her one unspoken request.

    To see him.

She tugged her sleeves over her wrists and smoothed the turtleneck up to her chin as she circumnavigated the inner disc. The last days of an Indian summer shone on the tall panes of outwardly tilted, polarized glass. She stepped onto the wind-whipped rim.

Warmth in her spine intensified like someone had clicked on a halogen.

He stood with his back to her, leaning at the curved railing over the far edge of the world. His elbow rested on a viewfinder; his other hand hung loose in his fitted slacks pocket. His hair, which used to be slicked back like a blond banker, now tousled every which way, helpless against the same wind that lifted her own loose strands and lashed them against her face.

She wrangled the escaped locks into a rubber band with practiced fingers and tested the thickness of her foundation at the hairline. Supple and unbroken, concealing what lay beneath. Because it was so windy, she tucked her ponytail into her soft hood and cinched the tie. Just to be safe.

Then she raised her camera. Against the duller, muted colors, he popped from the landscape like the only three-dimensional object.

    He glanced to his left.

She twisted the lenses to focus on his patrician nose and clicked the f-stop needle until his sharp eyebrows slashed dark against his pale skin.

    The shutter snapped.

She wound the film to the next blank image, cranking the long lever with her thumb.

    He shifted.

She took three more in quick succession.

A teen jostled him without apologizing. He moved out of her scope.

    She lowered the camera.

He followed the curve of the rail into the inner deck's tinted glass.

She sidled next to the teen and placed her feet in his invisible cooling footprints, standing exactly where she imagined he had stood. Below, the miniature city inched out in all directions, sharply in focus. Easy to reach. Easy to conquer.
