    CHAPTER ONE

‘What are we going to do?’ Dad was frazzled.

‘We’ll go to Auntie Clarrie’s,’ said Jodie. ‘Right Sam?’ Her small brother was busy investigating his ear with a pencil.

    ‘S’pose so,’ he mumbled.

‘I don’t know if she can cope with you. She’s not so young and you know what bad knees she’s got,’ said Dad. ‘And stop messing around with your ear, Sam. You’ll hurt yourself, and anyway, it’s driving me crazy.’

Sam yanked the pencil out of his ear, and began to pick his nose.

‘Why do we have to go?’ he sulked.

Dad sighed. ‘You know why. Mum has to stay in hospital until the baby’s born. I have to work and the school holidays are starting.’

‘And there isn’t anyone else,’ added Jodie. ‘Aunt Beth’s gone mountain climbing and Grandma Smart’s got a new job. Anyway, Auntie Clarrie lets us do what we want to. We can help her do cooking and stuff.’

‘I don’t know,’ said Dad. ‘I suppose there’s no choice. You’ll have to help her a lot.’

‘We will, we will, cross our hearts. Won’t we Sam?’ Jodie stretched her leg under the table and kicked him on the shin.

‘Yeah I guess,’ he said reluctantly, trailing spilt juice around the table with his finger.

‘Okay,’ said Dad. ‘I’ll call her and ask.’

He went to get his phone. Sam reached across the table and punched Jodie.

‘Ow,’ she squealed. ‘I’ll get you for that.’

When Dad came back, they were wrestling on the floor while the cat watched from the top of the cupboard.

‘If you’ll stop trying to kill each other,’ Dad yelled above the din, ‘Auntie Clarrie says she’ll be glad to have you, as long as you do the washing up and bring plenty of crossword puzzles.’

Jodie climbed off Sam’s head. He pulled her hair.

‘I hope you’re not going to behave like that at Auntie Clarrie’s,’ said Dad. Jodie rubbed her sore head. ‘Promise we’ll be good,’ she said. And she meant it. Auntie Clarrie was fun.

Two days later, after visiting Mum in hospital, Dad drove them to Auntie’s.

‘How long are we staying?’ asked Sam.

    ‘Until the baby’s born and
