    The road snaked gently left and right, the headlights illuminating the dotted white centre line. Apart from that, everything else around the car was pitch black. There wasn’t even a moon out.

    Brendan had the stereo going at a moderate volume, listening to a Foo Fighters’ track. He nodded his head to the beat of the music, really looking forward to getting some quality surfing in.

    It was about an hour before dawn and he was travelling a seldom-used stretch of coastal road, heading for a spot where no one else surfed. Or very rarely did, anyway. His plan was to arrive there just before daybreak and hit the waves at first light. Glancing in the rear view mirror, he saw his prized board resting in the back of the station wagon. He’d only bought it a few weeks ago to replace the dinged-up old one he’d previously been riding. Today would be the first time he’d ever used it and he was really keen to see what it was like.

    He reached for a pack of cigarettes on the passenger seat, pulled one out and lit it with a lighter from a pocket in his shirt. After winding down the window a crack to let the smoke escape, he took a long puff and idly watched it being sucked out of the car. The dark road veered to the left up ahead, so he slowed a little to negotiate the bend. The Foo Fighters’ track ended and an old Guns N’ Roses classic started pumping through the speakers.

    The rock world misses you guys, he said to himself and had another puff on his smoke.

    By now he’d been driving for well over an hour and not one other vehicle had been sighted. That was how little this stretch of road was used. Sure, the very early hour had something to do with it, but Brendan had cruised this road in the middle of the day and been lucky to be passed by a solitary car going in the opposite direction.
