Today was the second day of their hiking trip. Last night the three friends had camped on the grassy banks of a stream, lit a fire and roasted up the food they had brought with them. Tonight, if they wanted fresh meat for dinner, it would be up to them to catch it.

The sun filtered down through the trees and lit up the forest floor in patches. They trod over a carpet of dead leaves. Although the weather was still relatively mild now, winter was on its way in just over a month. The blue sky was broken up with patchy cloud and every so often a chilly breeze would blow through the woods.

Kevin and Rick were walking a few meters ahead of Jeff, heavy packs on their backs and telescopic fishing rods strapped to them. Kevin was the shorter of the two, thickset and robust, while Rick was taller and rather lanky.

Hey, Kevin, Jeff called out from behind. Are you sure you know where you’re going?

The other two paused and turned.

Kevin said, Just following the GPS. It shouldn’t be too much further away. He looked at the screen of the device he now held in his hand. According to this.

They kept moving just as a gust of wind soared through the trees and caused dead leaves to rain down on them.

This is kind of eerie, Rick commented as more leaves swirled around their boots.

Are you getting scared, Rick? Jeff said with a smirk. Do you think a monster is gonna come charging through the forest and attack us?

Don’t be stupid, Rick retaliated. And I don’t get scared of anything. You guys know that.

Kevin said, Just who are you trying to convince?

The ground gently sloped down to the left and Kevin followed the incline. Three sets of boots crunched over dried leaves as they weaved their way through the trees. Momentarily the sun was obscured by passing clouds, rendering the forest very gloomy under the canopy of branches. Jeff slipped on a hidden stone, stumbled to his knees, paused just a moment, then hauled himself back to his feet. His break in progress had meant his friends were now a distance ahead of him and trudging down a steeper slope. Jeff did a pirouette before continuing on, scanning the forest. He didn’t know what he was looking for, just suddenly had an uneasy feeling.

He smiled, realizing he was starting to act like Rick.

More leaves became airborne and fell from the trees as another gust of wind
