With Culture Briefing: Germany you'll discover the character, values, beliefs and customs of the Germans. You'll learn of their artistic endeavors and political ways. You'll find out about their home, family and religious life as well as how they make a living, educate their children and spend their leisure time. ABOUT THE AUTHOR
INTRODUCTION
Germany, or Deutschland, is a modern, industrialized country whose people enjoy a high standard of living. It has the world’s fourth largest economy and Europe’s largest.
Throughout most of its history, Germany has existed as a divided country, with at least two or more separate lands and governments. When America declared its independence from Britain in 1776, Germany consisted of almost eighteen hundred separate and fiercely independent political and administrative units. A single German nation existed only from 1871 to 1945 and again from 1990 until the present.
In 1945 at the end of World War II, the country was split into Communist East Germany and a democratic West Germany.
