About this ebook

Junker's Moon Scrap, Salvage and Servicing Company had a surge in popularity following the capture of notorious space pirate Dirk Knight. What Marshall, proprietor of Junker's Moon had not bargained for was the thirst for revenge and ferocity of Dirk's wife, Vanessa Longtail.
But first there was the question of what to do with Knight's ship which contained an arsenal of weapons all of its own.
'Marshall,' Lucy said with mock severity, 'if you want me to work on that dreadful ship, you will have to change its name.'
'Dreadful?' Marshall said with surprise.
'Terrible things were done on board that ship, did you not notice the patches and splashes of dried blood?'

Author

Peter Salisbury

I am a life-long fan of science fiction, and so when I had an idea for my first story, I wasn't surprised that it was in that genre. The first book took me ten years to complete, but I've got a little quicker since. I am pleased to say that I now have over thirty books published in my name. What next? So far I haven't run short of ideas for new stories, so there are several projects in various stages of completion, and I hope to be publishing the next story before too long, so please subscribe to my alerts. My profile picture is a portrait of the author as a young man, painted by my daughter Charlotte Salisbury who has also contributed to several of my book covers. Professional background In the 1970s I studied Chemistry at university and then spent over thirty years in classrooms across England teaching almost anything but Chemistry, including Photography, Communications Skills, General Science, Computing, and Information and Communications Technology. In the 1990s I spent ten years writing abstracts of chemical patents. This was a most exacting process but very rewarding to be reading about the very latest inventions in the field, and the abstracts were distributed world-wide to research scientists by subscription. Articles of mine have been published in magazines and I have written assignments used for assessing Communications Skills for a major international Examination Board. After retiring early this century I began writing in earnest.

    Chapter 1: Party Time

Lucy had been able, by virtue of her involvement in the capture of the pirate ship, The Black Medallion, to call dibs on the attentions of Marshall. Although she was the one who had actually fired the shell which had begun the pirates' downfall, after two nights with her boss, she had to give way to her colleagues. Marshall, sole proprietor of Junker's Moon Scrap, Salvage and Servicing Company, enjoyed an even greater popularity amongst his mainly female workforce than he had been used to.

Cheers resounded throughout the workshops and up and down the corridors of Junkers, at Marshall's announcement of a two day holiday. Somehow it got extended to the inside of a week. Marshall wasn't too concerned because the two ships in for repair were invited to join in the celebrations and were exceedingly glad to have been protected from the pirates' attack.

Marshall's coup of being able to wrest claim to the pirate vessel from FBIS, the generally despised Federal Bureau of Interstellar Security was something of considerable debate. How he had done it was a mystery. The fact that Debbi had reprogrammed Marshall's Space Vehicle Licensing Authority subscription to enable him to gain access to the database of arcane laws aboard the FBIS ship was still a secret shared only by Marshall and Debbi. Debbi had yet to reveal, even to Marshall, that she had in addition stolen a copy of the entire database. It was something she was sure would be of great utility to Marshall at some time in the future, and therefore of very significant value to her.

Lucy and the other two women, Judith and Debbi, who had been primarily involved in firing an ancient ballistic weapon from a derelict ship stranded on the moon, found there were other benefits to saving the lives of everyone on the Cymbeline base. Their work colleagues showed their gratitude by moving the three heroines into large and newly refurbished rooms in the residential quarter. Mo's Place, the only bar in town, was the venue for parties which continued for five days, during which time not one of the three women was allowed to stand for a single drink.

Before the pirate attack, three ships had been making their slow way in to Junker's Moon. It had taken them most of the following week to arrive, so they exited the hyperspace pipe right at the tail end of the festivities. Seeing that something unusual had been going on, the captains spent all their free time in Mo's Place being regaled with increasingly embellished tales of the pirate attack and their subsequent defeat.

Word spread of Junker's Moon's part in the capture of a pirate captain, whose name was being circulated on the news channels as Dirk Knight. Visitors arrived with increasing frequency, both to speak in person to those who lived at Junker's Moon, and to see for themselves Dirk Knight's ship, The Black Medallion. Marshall would not permit entry to it, saying that it contained dangerous and mysterious weaponry which had not yet been made secure.

Both hotels in the complex of buildings at the landing field were full to capacity, and their owners asked Marshall for the lease of additional rooms in the depot residential quarter, so that they could accommodate more guests. The farmers were also extremely happy about the new developments, and were called upon to provide supplies to feed the exceptional number of tourists.

Around the farming community, families made haste to assist the tourists in enjoying their stay. They put on hay-rides and guided tours of the farms, with fruit-picking and vegetable-digging as additional diversions. Real, down on the farm, home cooked meals were requested by some of the visitors, and soon a number of farmhouses opened their dining rooms to the consumption of authentic country cuisine. Tourists of an architectural or archaeological bent were happy to be taken on tours of the derelict city, which had enjoyed a brief period of prosperity before the property speculators left disappointed that they had been unable to make more of a profit. All of these activities were provided at extra charges, giving the farmers a welcome boost to their incomes. Some of the tourists even vowed to return to farm the land or set up restaurants of their own.

At Marshall's depot, it was time for promotions all round. The increased business being brought to Junker's Moon by tourism and word of sound repairs at fair prices, meant that Marshall was able to increase his workforce. He took on a new workshop manager and promoted Marianne, his previous manager to day manager. Marianne therefore took over Marshall's day-to-day tasks, leaving him free to indulge in other activities.

One thing Marshall had at the top of his list was a thorough inspection and assessment of The Black Medallion. Marshall had offered promotion to Judith but she said that she preferred to be paid off instead of serving notice, then enlist as a freelance test pilot, so that she was no longer tied to Junker's Moon by an employee contract. Lucy, who was half Judith's age, was delighted with the offer of further advanced training in engineering systems and the promise of promotion on completing of her courses. Debbi accepted Marshall's offer of a research post, which he was willing to create specially for her to use her abilities to the full. When she developed
