    CHAPTER 1

Philip Armstrong was in the library at the Oxford College that he was studying in, Philip had been studying the Second World War and his special subject was the Mystery of U-Boat 101. He had started studying U-101 three years ago and he had given up any hope of ever finding out what happened to U-101 and now for the last year he had returned to study the war through the German eyes.

He looked down at his watch and saw that it was time he had some tea, he got to his feet and left the library, he headed for his café that he had used since he joined the university and they did a special meal for students.

After his meal he decided to have a pint of beer and he headed for his pub which was called The Blue Parrot.

He ordered himself a pint and took it to the corner table and he sat down.

He had been there for about half an hour when his friend Joe came into the pub.

Philip got to his feet and went to the bar and ordered two pints of beer.

Joe said. ‘I don't believe it you are not reading about the dreaded Hun.’

‘Oh Joe I don't read about the Germans all day long you know.’

‘Well Phil you could have fooled me you are always reading about them, and you know fine well that there's a little lady would jump over backwards to have a date with you.’

‘Oh don't you go on about Susan if I wanted to go out with a girl then I would without your help.’

‘Oh come on Phil you know I just have your best interests at heart.’

‘Yes well if you start that again I will leave you to it, and you won’t see me for a month.’

‘Oh that's a good one coming from you, you would not know what to do if I was to stay away from this pub and if your not careful that’s exactly what I will do I can see when I'm not wanted.’

‘Oh don't be silly Joe you know I love you.’

    They both laughed at that.

Then Joe said I was in the library this afternoon and I saw you looking at a book, I shouted over but you were so engrossed with the book you never even heard me, it must be some book Phil.’

‘Well I'm going to leave you in the dark you see you would not like what I have stumbled on.’

‘Oh now you will have to tell me Phil or I wont sleep tonight, now come on tell Uncle Joe what it is.’

‘Well Joe I don't know if I should because you will be against it.’

‘What the hell can it be me against it.’

‘Ok Joe it's this and Phil took the small book from his pocket.

He gave the book to Joe and Joe said. ‘Oh know not that again, I thought that you gave that up three years ago.’

‘Well I had Joe because I had come up against a blank, but this book is very good and it tells a story of why U-101 went missing.’

‘Joe did not look at the book and he said. ‘Oh come off it Phil do you forget what happened three years ago, you had a very bad breakdown and it was all because of that tale about a Submarine, and to tell the truth Phil I don't want to see you go down that road again.’

‘Don't worry Joe I learnt a lesson from that and it won’t get me again.’

Joe picked up the book and began to read and he said how the hell do you expect me to read this book Phil it's in German you plank.’

Well I'll read it for you.’

‘Yes well before you do have you told anyone else.’

    ‘No not a soul Joe.’

‘Well what makes you think that it's better than all the dozens of books that you have read on the subject of Submarines.’

‘This is the only book to mention the U-101 now that in it's self is strange you see out of all the books that I have read not one of them mentions the U-101 up until now I was starting to think there was never a U-101.

But this book tells the story of the U-101 leaving on a journey of extreme secrecy even the Commander of the Submarine base did not know. And it is said that the captain of the U-101 did not know he had sealed order’s which he could not open until he was fifty miles from the docks. Now it must have been a very important job for them to leave the orders sealed until they were far from the docks.’

Joe said. ‘And that's why you have been chasing this nightmare for four years.’

‘No Joe I have not done anything about it for over a year.’

    ‘Yes
