About this ebook

In 2010, local inspirational author, Floyd Miley was at a crossroads in his life. He was a few months away from receiving his Master’s degree when he lost his management position. As the recession tightened its grip on the nation’s economy, he found himself unemployed, broke and on the verge of being homeless. Haunted by past failures, disappointments and abandoned dreams, this became the darkest moments in his life. When he stumbled across the poem, A Dream Deferred, he became inspired to pursue his dreams of being an author and motivational speaker. With his renewed passion, Floyd leaned on the winning principles he learned playing football for the University of Tennessee Volunteers.

The book's principles were based on Tennessee’s coaching legend General Robert Neyland's Game Maxims which have been the foundation to the program's success since the 1930s. The seven principles are compelling, proven, and designed to live a meaningful, balanced, prosperous, and joyous life. With insight and humor, Floyd promises to empower, encourage, and inspire readers to discover and operate their lives according to their purpose and destiny. This is a must read for anyone who finds themselves at a crossroads, trying to renew their passion, or focus on achieving greatness.

    DEDICATION

In memory of my father, Arthur E. Miley Sr. (Pang) 1947 - 2008

My son, D’Andre Miley, you inspire and motivate me more than you can ever imagine. It seems to me that no matter what obstacles you face, somehow you manage to keep going. That is the one thing about you that I truly respect. I am truly privileged and honored to have you as a son. I couldn’t have asked for a better son. As you enter into your greatness, I wish you well from the bottom of my heart because greatness is what you are.

My grandson, Uriyah Miley, at some point in your life you will come across this book and I hope that it is something that you can one day be proud of. This book is written for you because in many ways, it is a part of your legacy. God blessed me with a wonderful son, in your father, but then he smiled on me and blessed me again with you.

Ophelia Miley, my mother. This is the hardest part of this book that I had to write because words cannot describe how wonderful I feel to have you as a mother. If anyone ever wants to see what a blessing looks like, all they need to do is look at you. I praise God because He let me share in the joy of having you in my life. You are my rock, you are my mother, and you are my best friend.

    ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

Above all, I acknowledge God for being God. It is through His grace and mercy that I stand here today because of the things that He has brought me through. I thank you and praise you for being you.

In my life I have come across some of the greatest people in the world. The respect and love that I have for these individuals is eternal. They have played such an instrumental role in this project from conception to completion. May God Bless you for being a blessing to me.

    Foreword

What is my purpose in life? How can I be successful? What is God’s plan for my life? Why am I here? Have you ever wondered questions like theses? Of course, we all have at some point or another in life. Fortunately, with the new release of Recognize Your Greatness, all these questions and more can be answered, so you do not have to waste time trying to figure them out alone. The truth of the matter is that God loves you and has a perfect plan for your life. You need only to consult Him and put on the whole amour of God to successfully war against the wiles (tricks and attacks) of the enemy who will attempt to steal, kill, and destroy your dream(s).

Recognize Your Greatness, written by Floyd Miley, former University of Tennessee defensive back, plainly outlines the necessary steps to achieve the greatness which has been inherently deposited in you by God. Through his own life journey in obtaining greatness with his personal wittiness and comic relief, Floyd expounds on how to arrive at greatness. First, you must have a dream, for your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams (Acts 2:17). Secondly, we must search and seize the opportunity by asking, and it shall be given you; seeking, and ye shall find; knocking and it shall be opened unto you (Matthew 7:7).

Thirdly, one must be prepared for setbacks, but not let them stop you for we know weeping may endure for a night, but joy cometh in the morning (Psalms 30:5). Next, one must keep focus on the vision and be sure to not let it die knowing where there is no vision, the people perish (Proverbs 29:18). While doing these things, it is important to be prepared for haters and dream killers like the thief who comes not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy (John 10:10). Then, you must realize the culture of success by seeking first the kingdom of God, and His righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you (Matthew 6:33).

Finally, you must finish the race strong like a good solider having endured to the very end because the race is not given to the swift nor the battle to the strong (Ecclesiastes 9:11), but to him who endures until the end (Matthew 24:13). When you do all these things, you too can attain the greatness which God has invested in you. You need only trust Him and taste and see that the Lord is good. My prayer is that this book will bless you and encourage your hearts to fight on for the dream and that when it is achieved that you give all glory to God for the wonderful things He has done. Go forth and prosper as you begin your journey into greatness…

    Introduction

Ummm….I don’t know how I met Floyd Miley, the author of this book, but we’ve know each other for about 20 years, meeting in Nashville, TN in the 90s, sometime after I graduated from Tennessee State University. His sense of personal humor , the humor that he uses only around his circle of friends, is devastatingly funny and he is an all-around caring guy with a big heart. So imagine my surprise to find out that Teddy Bear Floyd, who looks like he’d chuckle like the Pillsbury doughboy if you poked him, was a rough-and-tough football player for the University of Tennessee Volunteers. I took great delight in hearing about the Miracle at South Bend and his role in a revenge win over a highly-touted University of Notre Dame team. Apparently, others take great delight in this as well – many Volunteer faithful remember that game and my friend.

Not long after we met, Floyd and I were separate by circumstances. Back then, you didn’t have social media, email addresses and cell phones, so if you lost numbers or changed phone numbers…it was a done deal. When I moved to Atlanta, GA, I was lucky enough to run into one of his friends who were looking for him as well. By this time, social media was in full swing, and I found Floyd. However, it wasn’t until the pending release of this book that we connected in a meaningful way. Our friendship has been rekindled by his vision to write and to speak about making dreams become reality. So, as we discussed his book by phone and email, I was even more fascinated about the fact that Floyd’s road to Tennessee traveled through the University of Michigan and Penn State University. To play for the Tennessee is no small accomplishment, but to be recruited by the likes of Michigan and Penn State (and others) meant that Floyd was the real deal athletically. I salivated with awe when I heard this.

This brings me to discuss the power of the title and text of this book, Recognizing Your Greatness. The beauty of athletics is that it teaches the importance of having a strategy – a plan to achieve a goal. Also,
