About this ebook

This is a set of vignettes set directly after Addicted (Book 2 of "The One Rises"). It is not a stand-alone story, but rather scenes I cut from Addicted. How did the humans bound at the end of Addicted react to finding out about demons and witches?

I'm a college professor with a Ph.D. so new it squeaks. I have a husband, a heterolifemate, and two cats. I'm willing to try any food I've never eaten at least once. I have jumped out of a plane (awesome), blown fire (also awesome), learned that having accelerant soak into your sports bra hurts like hell, and am a pagan (please note that this does not mean I'm a satanist).

    Preface

First, this novella is set directly after Addicted (Book 2 of the The One Rises) and is a set of vignettes rather than a fully contained story. If you haven't read Addicted, these vignettes probably won't make much sense.

Second, I denote thoughts by using italics. If, in the process of downloading this book, that formatting gets lost, you're going to be very confused. I've had some folks have difficulty with the formatting so below is a test italic sentence. Is this sentence in italics? If so, yay! If not, something has gone awry.

    Chapter 1: Callie White

Callie looked around the room and wondered what was going to happen next. She was in the basement of an apartment building in Hartford, Connecticut watching Silas explain that demons existed to a bunch of humans. It would be funny if it weren't so depressing.

The basement around them was set up as a workout room with weights and boxing equipment to one side. There was a pile of blue plastic matts piled in one corner; the matts had been on the floor until they’d set up a circle of chairs so all twelve people could see each other. She, Mark, Edie, Dyshawn, and Silas were all sitting on one side of a circle of chairs. Everyone else was on the other side.

Until yesterday, the seven people sitting across from her had been rolled by one of the bitten, Olufemi. They'd been her slaves, her servants, and her food. Now that Olufemi was dead, they all had to deal with world altering information and most of them weren’t taking it well. Not that I’m surprised. I’ve had weeks to process and I’m still confused. The last day or so had mostly been recovery, with people sleeping off injuries, exhaustion, and taking a whole lot of showers. Olufemi's basement lair was disgusting. I'm surprised we don't all have bacterial infections.

There weren't enough chairs, so Callie was practicing a newly learned trick: creating a moving elliptical of her levitation power to hold herself aloft. She tried putting her legs in different positions to see what was more comfortable.

Stop doing that, the male cop, Bishop, growled at her.

Callie tilted her head at him and considered his request. No.

What is your name, boy? Silas asked, ignoring the exchange, and looking at the sullen looking teenager.

The rail thin boy folded his arms and shot Silas an angry look. He can't be more than sixteen. Callie touched the pattern of his mind gently. The weave was loose so it seemed likely that he had a hard time keeping his mind focused on anything. A white-hot shimmer of anger, occasionally cut with a pop and crackle of surprise, obscured everything else. He was so angry that she couldn't read much about his personality from the pattern of his mind.

Silas rolled his eyes. I can just call you boy, if you prefer.

The boy looked away for a moment and then muttered, Fernando.

Bishop leaned forward in his seat and glared at
