Jake Emerson to the rescue...
When a man shows up on her doorstep claiming to be Jake Emerson, this would-be hero is everything Jody imagined him to be. Bonus—he brings out her forgotten flirty side, and makes her feel worth of love again. She stops doubting his story, but does believing in Jake mean she’s lost her sanity? To Gary, always my hero. Blue skies ahead, babe.

    Chapter One

The faces of the men on the screen blended into one hazy, featureless parade. Jody Feather scrolled through the dating profiles, a futile attempt to find even one guy who gave off a good vibe.

Someone like Jake, her hero. Easier to create a fictional one. A witty, sexy guy who saved people from certain disaster and did it with such panache, he made it look like a snap.

A little harder to find a real-life hero, unfortunately. Still scrolling, she laughed at her own bad luck in the love department. What else could she do? Five years ago, Brad unceremoniously dumped her after two years of shared bliss. He’d been her lover and friend, confidant and critique partner. Definitely too many eggs in one basket, and he’d cracked every last one.

Sure, she’d gone through a brief period of wallowing, but she’d seen too many friends succumb to long-term bitterness. Not Jody’s style.

Instead, she’d conjured Jake Emerson. Six books later, Jake had won over readers because she’d made him into a sensitive, caring guy who not only helped those in dire straits but also put satisfying a woman’s needs above his own pleasures.

Yup, definitely a figment of my imagination. If any guy like Jake existed, some woman would snatch him off the dating market in a blink. And problem number two? The only time she opened her heart was when she wrote.

So, maybe a little bitterness lingered. She was working on it. And on her seventh Jake Emerson book. Unfortunately, she had equally poor progress on both. She couldn’t help wonder if the two might be related. Hence, the dating site.

She sipped her white merlot, the one thing that relaxed her after a frustrating day, and continued scanning the faces online. Nope, all phonies. Their smiles too easy, their eyes pleasant enough in the photos.

She could imagine their reactions if she were to meet any of them. The slight arch of the brow. The roving eyes registering more disapproval than appreciation.

Yep, she could see it now… Maybe they’d be sharing cocktails at a cozy candlelit table for two, and he’d glance at his cell phone, shake his head and frown. Then would come the guillotine move, in which he severed their budding relationship with some made-up excuse. The finale, in which he bolted for the exit; the kicker, in which he subtly but most definitely kicked her to the curb.

At the imagined hurt, she rubbed her butt. No thanks.

As she shook her head to clear it, she could just hear her sister/mother warning, But you have to do something. And insert-caring-friend-or-relative’s-name-here adding, You haven’t had a real date in at least a year. And her agent: Do it in the name of research if nothing else! You’re Jody Feather, for God’s sake, adventure romance writer extraordinaire. If you can’t add some zing to your own life, how can you write about it?

Aaaand bingo. I can’t. Not for months.

So many fans had emailed her, begging to know the release date of the next installment in the Jake Emerson series. Her Facebook fan page contained so many posts about it Jody had asked her assistant to keep up with them.

As much as she loved writing about Jake, inspiration failed her lately. Reaching The End never presented such a struggle.

Not even Jake could save her from herself.

Oo, hold on. Her finger paused above the mouse at one photo. Russ Smith. He’s a possibility.

A click, and his image zoomed larger. Rawr. Niiice. Sandy highlights streaked his short brown hair. Eyes the clear blue of Key West waters. Six foot one, shoulders wide but not busting through his rumpled navy button-up like a Hulk wannabe.

Jody’s parakeet landed on her shoulder and chirped. I know, Frank. The first guy whose profile had piqued her interest. A lesser version of Jake, but in the flesh. What’s your story, Russ Smith? She clicked on the About Me link.

Twenty nine. Mm, a younger man. Computer tech/software engineer. Gamer geek. Likes quiet dinners, running, hiking, walks along the river, action and scifi movies. Have I seen you at Comic Con? In what costume?

    Frank’s tweet pierced Jody’s ear.

She rubbed it. Ow, calm down. I’m not being judgmental.

    Another loud chirp.

Okay, I am. But that’s the point of this site. You choose who might be best for you. The crux of the problem. Once they glimpsed her generous curves on her petite body, most deemed her lazy rather than an extreme professional who worked too many hours at a sedentary profession. Yeah, poor excuse for not keeping in shape, but until the last few months it had been true.

A flap of wings, and Frank had fled.

Et tu, Frankus? From his perch atop his large cage, the bird squawked. Jody laughed. "All right, I get it. I have to open up to chance.
