    The white-and-red lure splashed into the lake, sending cascading drops outward and rippling the otherwise calm surface. The gossamer line attached to the lure began to wind in, and the lure seesawed hypnotically only a foot before hooking the stalk of a lily pad several feet below the water’s face. The lily pad’s heart-shaped frond submerged as the lure drew harder on its trunk below.

    Dammit! Snagged. Jerrod grimaced as he lifted the tip of his rod until the fishing line seemed close to breaking, and then released the tension. He reeled in the excess filament until it became taut again, then looked at his older brother, who sat to his left beside the small outboard motor. Kyle grinned at Jerrod and shook his head, sipping at his fifth beer of the afternoon.

    Jerrod sighed. Can you pull over there so I can get loose?

    Kyle laughed. Just yank on it a little more, it’ll come.

    Jerrod stared at his brother for a moment. That’s my best lure.

    Coulda fooled me, Kyle said, an edge of laughter still in his voice as he cast his own bait perfectly onto the edge of the patch of lily pads that speckled the shallow waters of the lake. Kyle turned his head toward Jerrod again, his blue eyes dancing merrily in the shade of his baseball hat.

    Come on, Kyle, Jerrod said, his voice rising in frustration.

    Kyle took another pull off the beer, and then yanked nonchalantly on the starting cord, sending oblong bubbles to the surface of the water behind the boat as the thirty-five-horse Johnson began to chug.

    Jerrod sat and waited as the nose of the boat neared his snagged lure. In a moment they were floating
