About this ebook
The tale of a girl and her mecha.
Freya works the fields of her parents' farm with the help of Mohi, a semi-intelligent robot. Once, Mohi fought in the war against the mysterious Xenos, but that's all over now. Nothing exciting's ever going to happen on the colony world of Neper again, no matter how much Freya wishes something would.
But then she gets her wish, and it changes everything. She will finally get her excitement, will finally be the hero, but the cost may be more than she can bear.
"Mojito Doomsday" is a YA science-fiction short story set in the universe of Jonathan L. Howard's Russalka Chronicles, as featured in the novels KATYA's WORLD and KATYA'S WAR. It is self-contained and requires no knowledge of the novels.

She pauses in detaching the plough chains from her spinal couplings. She shifts her upper torso to bear upon me. She has cameras all over; she doesn't need to do that to see me, but she's been taught to somewhere along the line.
She says nothing. She doesn't know what I mean.
The war,
I say to her. I know it's a pointless conversation by now, but I can't help carrying on. The Xenos. What was it like fighting them?
She's clever, but only for a machine. I know she's trying to understand me. I know it's the word like
that's tripping her up. She's trying to make a subjective comparator objective and she can't do it. She's clever, but only for a machine.
Did you kill many of them?
