    Dragon's Fire - Danielle Kazemi

    Chapter 1

If you keep looking down the street, it's going to know we're waiting for it, Henry explained to Crispin. Both men were standing in an alley waiting for Annabel and Sera to come past them. He knew Crispin was concerned like he felt about his own girl.

Crispin leaned back against the brick building. He felt fairly certain he positioned himself out of sight in case they should come running down the street. It's hard for me to sit here and wait for them to come. I should be down there. I'm worried for them. All it takes is one well-placed attack and they can both be in some serious trouble.

They volunteered to do this. Henry reminded him. He knew this because earlier he tried talking Sera out of it but she told him she needed the practice. Being in a relationship with her didn't change the fact she still wanted to be independent. If anything, she knew it let her take more chances than before.

Still, it's dangerous. Crispin tapped his foot against the wall. He felt ready to dash down the road and catch up to them.

Both of them knew tracking down Unseen, creatures made of darkness, was not an easy task. Their race of dragons were the only kind capable of taking them on. Being the only ones in the city, it meant the job always fell squarely on their shoulders. That was why they came here after all. They traveled to this destination because of the complaints about Unseen moving into the area.

Hearing a noise, the two of them turned their attention back to the dark street. The dim streetlights barely outlined the figures they were seeking. There, Henry said pointing out the two girls coming towards them. They were running fast.

Crispin and Henry both transformed their hands into claws. They were ready to begin the attack. Now wait until they turn down here and – what happened? Crispin said confused. The girls were now running in the opposite direction from them.

Sera, Henry muttered to himself, She went right.

Damn it, Crispin curse lowly as they both took off to chase down the two women. The street was vacant so they had at least that to their advantage. It would be hard explaining to people why they had claws instead of hands.

Henry's phone started going off. Changing his hand back quickly, he grabbed it from his pocket. You turned right, he said into it before the other person was able to speak. He knew it was Sera calling.

No, Sera said, I went - ugh. She hung up the phone on him. She needed to bring the Unseen towards them. She couldn't believe she took the wrong turn again. Crispin was going to be furious.

Henry was laughing to himself as he continued running towards them. She was something else. If anything could go wrong, it did with her. Her luck was the reason why most of the time, when they chased these creatures, she was asked not to come.

As they continued down the street, both men stopped suddenly when they reached a brick building at the end of the street. Which way? Crispin asked. He didn’t see anything to indicate if they should go right or left. He wasn't sure where the girls went.

Henry shook his head. No idea.

Without turning his head from checking out the right side, Crispin said, Call them.

Henry plugged in the numbers and let it ring five times before ending the call. Nothing, he said shoving the phone back into his pocket. He had a feeling he knew what Crispin was going to say about this.

Crispin ran his fingers through his dark hair, tugging at it in frustration. This is exactly why I wanted us to stay as a group. Oh no – we can handle this. He slashed against a wall nearby leaving a scratch. He knew he shouldn’t leave such obvious marks but he needed to do something.

Split up? They needed to find the girls before they got attacked.

And split the group even more? No. We need to think about this calmly and rationally. I need to call Jules. Maybe he knows - Crispin looked up and saw Annabel and Sera running towards them. He smiled, happy to see them still up and about. The Unseen traveled close behind them as well. The dark figure swirled around, blocking the lights behind it.

Finally, Annabel said running past Crispin. She and Sera slowed down once they made it past the two men to catch their breaths. Reaching into her pocket, she snapped back on the watch Jules gave her. It would hide her from the Unseen. She didn’t have to worry about being attacked from the other side.

The two men latched onto the creature, tearing into it with their claws. The only thing useful in destroying an Unseen was either dragon claws or dragon's fire – both of which they possessed.

The Unseen started swirling, drawing the two men closer towards it. The blackness soon engulfed them and they could scarcely see beyond their own hands. This didn’t rattle them at all. Unseen used this technique many times before to create chaos. In the mix, it was possible for one person to attack the other by accident.

The benefit of working with someone for year was knowing what attacks the other one planned on doing. They continued ripping into the creature. Small bits of darkness fell onto the ground, squirming in an attempt to latch itself back onto the central mass. With each piece broken off, Sera used her breath and destroyed the piece before it rejoined itself. Wisps of smoke filled the air as piece after piece was destroyed.

Annabel saw one of the discarded pieces land near her. It still emitted the coldness from its main body. She backed up, her brown hair falling onto her face. Sera looked over and breathed on it. The piece quickly dispersed.

Thanks for that, Annabel replied. She worried constantly the Unseen coming after her again. The only reasons she agreed to this mission from Crispin was because she knew it would let them find the Unseen faster than if they continued aimlessly searching through the city. She wasn’t patient enough to do that and the others agreed. It would give her comfort knowing she didn’t need to keep looking over her shoulder when she saw a shadow.

Crispin lunged at the Unseen, digging his claws into it until he finished shredding everything he saw. He was ready to get rid of this. They tracked this particular one down for over a week now. It was beginning to get tiring. He hated letting projects go on for longer than absolutely needed.

When the Unseen was finally destroyed, both men stood there and began catching their breath. It took a lot out of them to fight a creature like this. Yet, as Crispin explained earlier, with each new fight it made them better prepared for the next one.

Where'd you go? Crispin asked Sera, as he leaned over to give himself one final push in collecting his breath. He straightened himself upright, able to breathe normally again. His claws had already changed back into hands.

Sera looked up and shook her head, her dark hair being tossed about. I thought I was going left but I went right. It happens.

He couldn't believe she still had trouble getting those two directions straight. That was one of the first things they worked on. Are either one of you hurt?

Henry shook his blond head. I'm fine. He wanted to laugh. He knew Crispin wasn’t talking to him. Sure enough, Crispin shook his head and rolled his eyes a bit at the comment.

I'm okay. A little tired from running but that's to be expected, Annabel replied. She never realized how out of shape she was until she started helping them out. Now she had to practice running almost every day or she couldn't keep up.

Crispin smiled at her. Glad to hear that. Now let's head back before Jules gets worried about us. I'm sure he wants a complete run down about everything that happened.

Can we leave out the part about me forgetting which way to run? Sera asked. She knew the answer.

Henry laughed. Nope, everyone gets to find out. He winked at her. He wanted to wrap his arms around her but he knew that would be too obvious. They didn't need to incur Crispin's wrath at the moment. He still didn’t know the two of them shared a strong connection.

She smiled back and gave Henry a small squeeze on his upper arm. He was so hopeless.

    Chapter 2

This is interesting. I think we might have to rethink how we deal with Unseen. Can you imagine if this was a stronger one? You two would've been killed, Jules said aloud listening to their story. He took notes so later on he could input the data into his system. He was tracking the Unseen through the city and wanted to make a probability chart about where the next attack would be. Hopefully this cut down on problems in the future.

Crispin nodded. I agree on that aspect. It was far too dangerous allowing them to do that. I think this proved we can't do the bait approach again. We'll have to think of something else. He looked over at Annabel and Sera. Annabel nodded her head in agreement with him. Sera rolled her eyes. She knew she could handle this. He was pulling the over protective act on her once more.

You didn't pick up any more activity since we left right? Henry asked. He let out a yawn and quickly covered it with his hand. He was ready to sleep. It was a long day tracking down the Unseen and then fighting it to death. They went all over town.

Jules shook his head. Everything's been pretty quiet. I was even thinking about taking a little stroll tonight. He reached over and hit a few keys on the computer. The screen images switched, showing different areas of the city coming into view.

Everyone in the room looked at him oddly. This was out of his normal behavior pattern. Most of the time, he stayed inside of his room busy with something or the other. You want to go walking at night? Crispin asked. That was the question everyone wondered about.

I've been known to do that. He got a bit defensive. He felt they were ganging up on him. It was quite possible for him to walk and not have to explain himself. They did it all the time after all.

It seems so – not you. In the years Crispin knew him, Jules preferred staying around his gadgets. It was hard getting him to meet new people let alone having him go out and meet them on his own.

I have to agree with Crispin on this. I don't think I've ever seen you leave this house yet. What's going on? Henry asked. He saw Jules beginning to turn a little red. It showed quite clearly in contrast with his dark hair. He must be meeting someone. A woman by the looks of it.

Nothing at all. I like being out. He busied himself with a device on the table. He refused to look at any of them, knowing he couldn’t stop them from continuing to ask questions. Eventually he’d reveal the truth if they kept after him.

Annabel quipped in, Who is she?

Henry smiled at her from his seat. He used to be the only one asking the others these intrusive questions but it was nice having someone else who interjected every now and again. It was harder for them to refuse answering her.

Jules went on the defensive once more. Nobody. I'm really enjoying my time walking around and seeing the city.

The other four exchanged looks with each other, smiling. It was good seeing Jules go out and get in touch with other people. It was only odd for him to be secretive about it.

Are you sure there's no particular person you're going meet? Henry asked. He usually had a sixth sense about things like this. He was fairly certain there was a girl he planned on meeting. She was probably a librarian or something else in the academic or scientific field. That would make sense.

Jules crossed his arms and looked at Henry. Is there a particular thing you'd like to share with us?

Henry's eyes grew slightly wider. He still hadn’t told Crispin he mated with Sera. I hope you have fun tonight. It was better for him to go along with the story than have Jules open his mouth. It wouldn’t end the night on a pleasant note if Crispin learned the truth.

If you need us, make sure you call, Crispin reminded him, One of us can show up.

Thanks but I think I'll be okay, Jules said grabbing for his light coat. The weather was beginning to get colder outside. With a brief nod to everyone in the room, he headed out. He knew they could function for a while without him.

I should probably be heading out too. I have work in the morning, Annabel said turning to Crispin. He brought her to their house and she needed him to drive her back. It would be a long walk if he refused.

You can always quit. Any day, he told her.

It looks really suspicious to show up with money when everyone knows I'm not working. She tried working for Crispin earlier but when they drifted apart for a while, she found herself in an odd financial state. She couldn't afford for that to happen again. Besides, it was weird since she was dating him now.

He smiled at her. One day she would join with them. I'll bring you back home. You two are going to be okay? He turned towards Henry and Sera. He didn't want to leave his friend feeling as though he dumped his sister on him all the time.

Yeah, Henry replied, We'll probably catch up on our sleep. It's been a long day. He yawned again to further drive in the point.

Sera hid a smile, brushing her hair out of her face to keep busy. I'm going to watch some TV or something. She wasn’t looking at Henry. If she did, she was going to let on something was happening between the two of them. They were so close to being alone. She didn’t want to do anything stupid to jeopardize their time.

Alright. I'll see you in the morning. Crispin stood up and helped walk Annabel to the front door. Both Henry and Sera watched them leave down the driveway and then smiled at each other. They were finally alone.

Henry walked over to her and began kissing her. I was so worried about you earlier. I almost kissed you after killing the creature. He ran his hand along her cheek, feeling her move closer towards him. He missed touching her.

It's nice to hear you say that, she said nuzzling herself against his neck. She kissed him there, feeling her lips brush his skin. He felt warm, exactly as she remembered from earlier. It was hard keeping their relationship a secret especially inside of such close quarters.

They knew they needed to keep their relationship hidden in front of Crispin. There was only one rule Crispin stated when Sera joined their team – she was off limits to both Henry and Jules. Henry tried resisting but when he found out she felt the same way as him, it was only a matter of time. He claimed her as his mate as soon as he could. That was only two weeks ago. They still couldn’t get enough of one other.

You weren't serious about needing sleep were you? Sera raised her eyebrow coyly. She gave him a smile, motioning with her eyes upstairs. She hoped he understood exactly what she meant.

Absolutely not. He grinned back and picked her up. Her legs wrapped around his waist, her arms around his neck. I don't think we're even going to make it to the bed. He dropped onto the couch with her. No one else was in the house so he found no reason to be shy. He had her all to himself.

    Chapter 3

You're home finally, June said watching her roommate walk into the house followed by Crispin, I've been waiting for you to come back. The television tuned in on some old black and white show playing on the background. She had set out soda cans and pretzels – one of the many small traditions both of them had when it came to watching shows.

I should've called. You didn't need to stay up. I was okay. I was out with Crispin on a little date, Annabel explained. She didn't know June would stay up waiting for her. It must be draining for her. She never told June she helped Crispin and the others fight off the Unseen. She would never believe it. It was hard enough for Annabel to believe it and she lived through it.

June waved her off. It's fine – I caught some sort of marathon of old shows. I'm now all caught up on what happened during the seventies which was nothing as far as television goes. It was only a lot of singing. She stood up, her mismatched pajamas setting her apart from everything else. The bright yellow top was especially useful in defining her.

Annabel looked around the room, expecting to see someone else around there. The house seemed pretty quiet. What happened to your date tonight?

He decided to leave and go somewhere else. His lost. I'm not going to lose any sleep over him. Besides, I'm sure I can find someone else, June answered, keeping herself positive. She wasn’t one to stay single for long. Besides, it had only been a quick week of dating.

We're gonna – go to sleep, Annabel said yawning. She meant it. She was exhausted.

Yeah, June grinned knowing what sleep meant, Anyway, I should get some sleep too. I'll see you in the morning. She padded her way through the open area and into her room, closing the door behind her.

She still manages to surprise me, Crispin remarked. He got to know June rather well over the past few weeks but when he thought he figured her out, she changed into something else. He wasn't sure how she managed that. He was usually good at reading people.

Annabel laughed. She has a talent for it. She walked in the direction of her room. Crispin followed, checking out the rest of her house as he moved through. He didn't want to have any surprises during the middle of the night from someone waiting to ambush him. It wouldn't surprise him if someone knew where Annabel lived and decided to set a trap for him. They would catch him here sooner or later.

Since everything happened to her recently, Annabel found it hard sleeping comfortably at night without having Crispin nearby. Between the random Unseen attacks and knights trying to kill them, it plagued her constantly. Crispin didn't mind. He enjoyed their time together. He usually left soon afterwards to go see the others. It became part of his nighttime routine.

Annabel grabbed her sleep clothes and headed off into her bathroom to change. She tried changing in front of him once and they realized they weren’t good at controlling themselves. Until she felt better in control of her emotions, she needed to keep herself away from him when there was a lack of clothing. She would get herself into a mess before she knew what happened. Besides, it would keep adding mystery to their relationship.

Checking herself in the mirror, she brushed her hair and even reapplied a bit of makeup to her face. She knew she was breaking all sorts of rules about wearing makeup to bed but she wasn’t letting Crispin see her disheveled. Secure she looked good, she opened the door.

He stood at the window, peeking through the curtain at the street below. Turning around, Crispin stared at her for a few moments before saying, You look nice. She only wore a large shirt with shorts but she could’ve been wearing anything and made it look good. His eyes settled on her for a bit longer than they should have. He looked up, hoping she hadn't caught that.

She blushed a bit. He was transparent sometimes. Thanks. It felt nice getting any sort of attention from him that didn't involve him saving her from something.

They crawled into bed next to one another with Crispin putting his arms around her. You're such a nice guy, Annabel said moving herself closer to him. He was someone steady she could always count on.

He kissed her forehead. Good night Annabel.

She closed her eyes and snuggled herself against him even closer. It was nice holding on to him. He really was a nice guy. Most guys would’ve gone crazy already from lack of close physical contact.

She told him after the death of Perry that she was ready to take the tests to be with him. The human mate of a dragon had to go through certain tests before they were officially together. The tests were usually dangerous or at least she heard they were. Crispin refused to believe her and wanted her to wait until she was in a better frame of mind before letting her make the decision.

When she felt more herself, she realized she wasn't ready. Breaking the news to Crispin was hard but he took it well. She was prepared for him to leave her, knowing she put them being together off for even longer. Instead, he explained how he would wait and help train her. He was certain with a little help she could pass the tests without any problems.

    Crispin? she asked.

    Yeah?

Would you mind staying here tonight? She hesitated asking him. She didn't know if he planned already to stay or not. A few times he needed to go out and make sure the streets were safe from the Unseen. However, he explained that after an Unseen was killed, it took a while for another to show up. Maybe knowing this would sway him into staying.

He smiled and brushed her hair out of her face. Of course. It's no problem.

If you need a shirt to sleep in, I have one in the drawer. She
