Overeating
PREFACE/DISCLAIMER
Although this is a book for Compulsive Overeaters, who want to learn why they compulsively overeat and how to stop compulsive overeating, the vast majority of compulsive overeaters also struggle with their weight. Just take a look at my picture. As you follow the principles in this book you will probably find yourself losing weight as you change your lifestyle, eating and exercise habits.
It’s important to remember that before you start any weight normalization program you should have a comprehensive physical examination by your Family Practice or Internal Medicine physician. This examination will make sure that your weight problem isn’t caused by a medical condition such as diabetes, or a problem with your thyroid gland and more importantly, that you don’t have an undiscovered problem with your heart, lungs or skeletal structure that might be made worse by exercise or diet.
It’s important that you discuss with your physician your new lifestyle, for example, the new way you will be eating and exercising before you start so your doctor can support you in changing your lifestyle and follow the status of your health as your weight normalizes. Typically your doctor will be monitoring your weight, blood pressure and blood glucose levels as these three are objectives measurements of how your weight loss is impacting your health.
The Doc Grubb program does not take the place of medical treatments recommended by your doctor. Do not make any changes in your medications without first consulting your doctor. As for any weight normalization or diet program, I cannot be held legally responsible for any adverse event that occurs because of improperly following the guidance in this book or on my web page.

DISCLAIMER: This book is the product of my own research and clinical experience. Because of the scientifically proven ways to help adults and children normalize their weight it is impossible for my program not to overlap with other weight normalization programs. I have not copied any other program. The similarity of my program with any other program is only because I use the same physiological, psychological and behavioral modification techniques as the other programs.

INTRODUCTION
Does this story sound familiar to you? Is it your typical day?
You feel that you can never eat enough food to feel satisfied. You know you should stop eating but you just can’t. You eat continually from the time you arrive at work until you leave work to go home. Your drawers are full of snack foods, such as cookies and crackers and you have a jar of candy on your desk that you constantly have to refill. Before you leave work, you think about what you will eat when you get home, but driving home you always pull into the drive-through of your favorite fast food restaurant and get 2 or 3 hamburgers and a large milk shake. Or you might get a box of donuts. It seems impossible, but the hamburgers or donuts are GONE by the time you reach home. As soon as you walk in the door you drop your purse or bags on the floor and immediately look in the shelves and the refrigerator to see what foods are in the house. You find a box of macaroni and cheese and you fix it immediately. It’s so hard to wait for the water to boil but you make yourself wait. You feel a little bit better but when you find out that you’ve eaten all the food in the house you call the local Chinese restaurant to bring you more food. So you won’t feel embarrassed, when you order your food you hold the phone away from your mouth and say out loud and what do you guys want?
so the person taking the order will think that the huge amount of food you are ordering is not just for one person. You try not to think about how much money you spend on fast foods and carry out foods every month, but you never seem to be able to save enough money to feel comfortable if you sudden have an emergency. As soon as the food arrives and you’ve paid for it, you immediately tear into it while you are standing at the kitchen counter. You can’t wait long enough to sit down at a table and eat. Although you’ve eaten enough food for three people when you finish, you are still hungry! Your stomach hurts and you feel so ashamed but you want more food! You call the local pizza parlor, (you have their number on your cell phone), and order their LARGEST cheese pizza. After eating the whole pizza, you are in so much physical pain that you just…can’t…eat…anymore. Lying on the couch you are so uncomfortable that you have problems focusing on the movie or television show you are watching. You try not to notice, but everyone in the show looks so skinny and the commercials for food look so tempting. You finally get up off the couch, or out of your comfy chair, and go to bed. The movie you saw was scary and the room is hot so you toss and turn all night having to get up several times to go to the bathroom. You wake up with your pajamas and sheets soaked with sweat but somehow you DRAG yourself out of bed, get a shower and maybe drink a cup of coffee, but you just don’t feel like eating breakfast. Anyway you don’t have time to eat. You have to get to work and your supervisor just doesn’t understand it when you show up late to work. When you get to work you buy a couple of donuts and a tall specialty coffee. You think my gosh, $5.00 for a cup of coffee!
Within a few hours of eating the donuts you start on the stash of food in your drawers, or maybe you’ll look in the office refrigerator to see if there is some cake left over from the birthday party the day before.
And it all starts again. Your days are spent constantly thinking about and eating foods that seem to make you feel better.
Hello…My Name is Larry and I’m a Compulsive Overeater.
There I’ve said something I’ve hidden for years.
Have you ever thrown food away in disgust after eating more than you intended, swearing never to eat so much again, but then later you pull it out of the trash and ate it? I have…many times.
Have you ever been discriminated against in your business organization and not got promotions or pay raises because of your weight? I have.
Have you starved yourself to lose weight and then when you start to eat normally regained all the weight you lost back…plus some more? I have…many times.
I like to share this picture of myself at the finish line of the 1978 Honolulu, HI Marathon.
I’m really a skinny dude in the picture, but it was artificial because I had starved myself and over-exercised like a maniac. Do you think I had an eating disorder? I do and I did.
IT’S TIME FOR A QUIZ
Before we go any further, I’d like for you to answer the following questions. Take a pencil or pen and put a Y
for yes
or an N
for no
next to the question. (If this isn’t your book…buy a copy, you’ll thank me later…or just put the numbers down on a scrap piece of paper and put the Y and N next to the number).
Do you think about food or your weight constantly?
When you start eating do you know and want to stop eating and you can’t?
Do you eat large quantities of food at one time?
Do you eat in secret and eat differently in private than you do when you are with other people?
Have you ever discarded food, only to retrieve it and eat it later?
Do you try the latest diet or food plan with no permanent weight loss?
Has a doctor or family member ever approached you with concern about your eating habits or weight?
Do you graze
all day, and all night constantly looking for food in the refrigerator or cabinets?
Do you eat to escape from your feelings?
Do you eat when you’re not hungry?
Have you ever stolen other people’s food from the refrigerator at work?
Do you feel ashamed about what you’ve eaten?
Do you say when I lose the weight my life will be great?
Do you feel hopeless about your relationship with food?
If you answered Yes
to even one or two of these questions, then food is a very important part of, and the center of, your life. You are probably a Compulsive Overeater and might even be addicted to certain foods.
This book is going to help you finally STOP your compulsive overeating. Once you start eating normally you will find that your weight will decrease until you reach your natural weight, the weight programmed by your family’s genetics.
The program you will follow in this book is NOT a diet. Diets don’t work!
WHY DIETS DON’T WORK
You will lose weight on ANY diet that restricts calories. I’ll say that again you will lose weight on ANY diet that restricts calories.
Your natural weight set-point has a huge influence on what you weigh
Diets may increase your weight set point.
When you diet and restrict calories your body thinks you are starving and your metabolism slows down to conserve calories. Your body uses calories more efficiently which makes it REALLY hard to keep losing weight and to maintain a weight loss.
A yo-yo
diet it is almost certain to make you gain weight. After starving yourself your body becomes extremely efficiently about saving calories and will store them as fat preparing for the next famine or starvation diet. So when you go OFF your diet and increase your caloric intake…watch out!
WHY ANOTHER BOOK?
You might be asking Why did Doc Grubb write another book?
Great Question! My first book, Solving the Weight Loss Puzzle,
and its accompanying CD Reaching Your Natural Weight
were a synthesis of all that was known about dieting and weight normalization. In that book I first introduced my Three Secrets to reach a natural weight
:
Secret #1: Eat the right foods in the right amounts
Secret #2: Exercise everyday and enjoy it
Secret #3: Set goals and write them down!
I intended for the book to be very user-friendly and everyone who has read the book and listened to its accompanying CD has commented on how much they learned and how their life has improved. However, I wrote Solving the Weight Loss Puzzle
almost five years ago. Since that time I have read at least 2-3 books every week about the latest diets, eating disorders such as Anorexia and Bulimia, and most importantly, an enormous amount of material about the biochemistry and interconnections of the brain, body and digestive systems. I have also attended many conferences on eating disorders and obesity and continue to read the latest medical journals so I am constantly up-to-date on the most recent research on obesity, appetite and weight control. Of course, I continue to read the National InquirerR every week in the supermarket checkout line so I really stay informed about the newest, latest and greatest diets. I also have performed HUNDREDS of psychological evaluation with markedly overweight men, women and even adolescents who are hoping to have bariatric surgery to lose weight. With all of this new knowledge I have gained, it is clear that I have to give my readers, and those who are struggling with their weight, a way to understand why it is so very hard to lose and maintain weight and to address one of the main reasons we are overweight…Compulsive Overeating.
If you are a compulsive overeater, you probably
