About this ebook

It was approaching 8 o’clock and a nice fish supper would go down well.’
They had a slow walk through the village talking as they went.
Andy said. ‘Joe I’m not kidding I did not like the look of that tall man today, I don’t know why but I get the feeling that he was there because of us.’ ‘I know Andy but maybe it's because he thinks there’s treasure at the end of the road.’ ‘Aye you might be right but there’s something about that guy that’s getting to me.’ ‘Oh and what’s that.’ ‘Well it could be me again but every time we go to the Fox there’s a little grubby guy there too. Who sits on the table next to us every time we go to the pub, I mean one night, it was the night before last, I was watching him like a hawk, because the table next to us was taken. He just stood at the bar and every now and again he would look in our direction.’ ‘Well that could be nothing Andy.’ ‘Yes maybe, but the people at the table next to us left, and within two minutes he was at the table next to us.’ ‘It could be he just likes that table, so tonight with the girls not here we will stand at the bar and just see what he does.’
When they arrived at the Fox and Hounds they went straight to the bar Joe ordered two pints while Andy looked around for the little grubby man.
They stood and talked for about half an hour. Joe saluted Andy and said. ‘Don’t look now but, you have got company.’
Andy turned to see the little man not six inches away from his elbow.
He turned back to face Joe and said with a wink of his eye. ‘Well Joe, did you catch your villain today or was your police work all in vain.’ Joe took up what Andy had started. ‘Yes, Andy, we got him today, he will get twenty years if I have anything to do with it.’
Andy nodded for them to take their drinks over to the table in the corner they sat down and Andy said. ‘What’s the betting he will come to the table on your right within five minutes?’ Just as Andy had finished saying this the little grubby man picked up his drink and came to the table next to them.
Andy winked again, then stood up with his drink in his hand and they both walked back to the bar.
Andy looked at Joe and said. ‘I don’t know what he is up to Joe but if things go on much longer I will do something to that little shit believe me.’ ‘No Andy you never know it might be he just likes that table, I mean he has not followed us back to the bar.’ ‘Yes, very well Joe but all I’m worried about is if he heard us talking the other night, and he could hardly follow us back here that would give his little game away, no I still have a funny feeling about that little guy.’ As Andy said this Joe looked over to the table and caught the little guy watching them.

    Chapter 1

The year was 1751; the place was Southern Spain.

Thomas Crow was travelling through Spain on a survey for the English government.

He was riding across a desolate moor and it was a very stormy night,

The wind was howling and the rain was pouring down he could hardly see a hand in front of him.

As he was walking along he could see a rider in the distance coming towards him.

As the rider got nearer to him, a bolt of lightning hit the ground in front of the horse. The horse got a fright and jumped up on its hind legs throwing the rider to the ground.

Thomas heard a cracking noise and knew that the man had been hurt. His own horse had jumped too but he had kept it under control. Then he noticed the rider lay still; he dismounted and tied his horse to a stump of a tree.

Then he rushed over to the stranger and bent down on one knee. Then he felt for a pulse, he could feel the pulse it was as far as he could tell o-k.

He went back to his horse and brought it over to where the man lay then with a lot of effort he lifted the man across his saddle. Then he started to walk in what he thought was the direction for the village he was looking for.

As he walked the storm got worse he could hardly see where he was then after about two hours he saw some lights in the distance. This lifted his spirits.

When he entered the village, he was about done in he was very tired.

He went to the first tavern he came to and knocked on the door, he could not leave the man on the horse because of the storm and the horse might bolt.

The landlord came to the door and shouted, ‘What do you want.’

It’s this gentleman he was thrown from his horse and I brought him here.’

‘Well you can take him to another Inn; I have no time for him.’

‘But the man’s in a bad way you have got to help.’

    ‘Your English aren’t you.’

But what has that to do with it? This man I think is Spanish and needs help.’

‘Oh an Englishman who speaks Spanish like a local, oh very well let me take a look at him.’

The landlord went to the horse then with a hand full of hair lifted the stranger’s head.

When he saw the face of the man on the horse he put the head down gently and said, ‘wait here I’ll get help.’ Thomas looked at him and said. ‘What made you change your mind.’

‘This man is Don Carlos; I would carry him through fire if I had to. He is very rich but he is also a very kind man. He gives to the poor and the sick this man is a good man believe me.

When they had got Don Carlos into the Inn the landlord sent for a doctor and then they took him up to the best room in the Inn.

When the landlord came back down he said ‘And where are you heading to.’

‘Well I am heading for the town of Saville.’ Oh that’s a good fifty miles away yet.’

‘Yes that’s why I would like a room if you have one.’

‘Oh yes we have a room for you I would be in trouble from Don Carlos if I let you go without seeing him.

The next morning Thomas was sitting getting breakfast when the landlord came to his table.

‘Good morning Mr. Thomas, I hope you had a good night's sleep?’

‘Yes I slept like a log I think it’s because of the day I had yesterday that I slept well.’

‘Well I’m glad of that, now Don Carlos said that I was not to let you go on your travels without seeing him. He said that the Doctor was coming to visit him this afternoon and if you could stay until he has seen the Doctor. He would like you to go up, he said the reason he could not see you now was because the Doctor told him no visitors until he has seen Don Carlos again.’

‘Yes well I could do with a days rest so I think I will just stay here until you call me.’

It was about 2 o’clock in the afternoon when the landlord came to Thomas.

‘Hello Mr. Thomas Don Carlos wants’ to see you now he is in the end room to the right of your room.’

Thomas went upstairs and knocked on the door of Don Carlos.

A voice from within shouted. ‘Come on in Mr. Crow.’ Thomas opened the door and went in. Don Carlos was sitting up in bed and he waved for Thomas to come to the bedside.

Then he said. ‘I am very pleased to meet you Mr. Crow.’

‘Just call me Thomas or Tom please.’

‘Right then Tom I like that name its short and sweet, right Tom are you in a hurry to leave this part of Spain or have you got time to spare.’

‘Well Sir I do have a job to do but I have no set time table to work to I am my own boss out here.’

‘Then Tom you could stay here for a couple of weeks because I would like to reward you for what you did.’

‘I just did what any man would do.’

‘No Tom if you had left me the Doctor told me that I would be dead by now, and can you tell me your answer now because the Doctor has given me drugs to knock me out and I’m getting to feel a bit sleepy right now.’

‘Well yes Sir I will hang around for a couple of weeks I don’t think that will hurt.’

‘Right Thomas I need to sleep now so I will say good afternoon and I will see you when I am back in the living.’ He laughed at that.

It was the next day when Thomas was called to go see Don Carlos again. And when Thomas walked into the room he could see that Don Carlos was a lot better for his forced sleep.

Don Carlos said.’ Come in Tom please I want you to meet my banker and friend Fernando. Thomas held out his hand and the banker took hold of it and shook it then said. ‘So Senior you are the hero that befriended on Carlos.’

    ‘Yes I’m afraid so.’

‘Oh Senior don’t be afraid you did us a favor by saving Don Carlos we can't thank you enough.’

Three weeks went by then one morning Don Carlos sent for Thomas.

When Thomas entered the room Fernando was there he said hello to the two men then just stood and waited to see what Don
