When I was ten I went fishing, never realizing what I might catch that day. There had been a storm the day before, the water seemed unsettled as I walked along the dock and no one else was there. After using all my bait, I pulled out one of the chewy caramel that I saved for the walk home, instead I placed it on my line and cast it out. I chuckled at the idea of catching a fish with a sweet tooth. In a second the water started splashing wildly, making me almost lost my fishing pole. I slowly reeled in my giant fish, only to realize that it was a small girl mermaid.
I rushed closer to the water to get a better look, then she put her elbows on the dock and pulled the hook from the candy. you can catch lots of mermaids with this.
she said. We talked for a while, well, until she had to leave. Everyday I walked down to the dock and brought candy. In turn she'd tell me about herself and her family. We had been best friends for six years.
Cindra is the fifteenth child in her moms twentieth pregnancy. Mermaids have lots of children, because the oceans are dangerous. Her father, Neptunis is very protective of his youngest daughter. He has thousands, but Cindra is his favorite with her curiosity and easy way of making friends. She stole his heart when she was still a guppy, which is a baby mermaid, by trying to hide in his long flowing gray haired beard. They all live in a beautiful coral palace. It is surrounded by the whitest of sands, which makes the palace look like a jewel on the bottom of the oceans floor. The palace is just a half a mile off of the shore line, and the gulf water that flows by keep warm all year long, even for its northern location.
I no longer had to dig worms for bait, but had to raid my piggy bank for the caramel candy that Cindra loved. In return she brought me the largest fish that she knew that I could easily carry home. She had carefully cut the fish in its head with her shell knife, to keep them alive and fresh. Mom was surprised with the fish, so she gave me a few dollars for the bait. This worked out well. The dark gray dock was deserted as I sat down by the water. Several tiny bubbles broke the surface as Cindra's smiling face appeared. Her long blonde hair flowed the way the water flowed as she pulled herself up and sat next to me.
Hi Cindra, how are you doing today?
I'm doing fine, but our neighboring mermaid colonies are fighting amongst themselves. They have my father worried. I may not be able to visit you after today.
Well, that's not fair.
I said.
I know.
she replied.
What are you wanting to do?
I asked.
I'm so angry at my father.
she answered.
What can you do?
I asked.
I can change into human form.
she answered.
How's that possible?
I asked.
How do you think humans denominated the land?
Cindra questioned.
All of us came from the ocean?
I asked.
Yes.
she answered with a smile.
So if we wanted to, we can go back to the sea?
I asked.
Yes.
she answered.
I wonder why no one up here on land knows this.
I asked.
Maybe they're being like my father and don't want anyone to leave their home.
Cindra answered.
I held Cindra's hand to comfort her, because she was clearly upset. Her hand was warm, soft and stronger than I had imagined. She leaned closer and we kissed. Cindra smiled at me. She reached inside of her little pouch that was fastened to her belt and pulled out a beautiful shelled necklace. In the center was a purple gem and she handed it to me.
This is your mermaid necklace. It will change you into a merman, if you have it on when you're in the sea. To change back, just take it off.
Cindra said.
Thank you.
I replied.
You're welcome Joey. Want to try it out right now?
she asked.
I'd like too, but I have to go to work in a little while.
Joe answered.
You have to work? Why?
Cindra asked.
My mom has to pay the bills like rent, food gas and electric so I help her.
Joey answered.
Cindra again reached inside of her little pouch, this time she pulled out four gold coins and handed them to Joey. He examined them closely and saw that the coins had marks and symbols that he couldn't identify. He gave them back to her.
Thanks Cindra, but I can't take your money.
Joey said.
That's not money for us mermaids.
she replied pulling out several small pretty shells from her pouch and showed them to Joey. this is our money.
she said.
The shells are beautiful, our money is ugly gray coins and green paper.
Joey replied.
What about these shiny gold coins. Didn't the lands-people make them?
Cindra asked.
Yes, a long time ago. Each one is very valuable and one could pay off a years worth of bills.
he answered.
Here please take them, there are many more out there.
Cindra said.
How would I tell her how I got them?
Joey asked.
They sat quietly thinking.
You could say that an old man gave them to you.
Cindra answered.
I don't want to lie to my mom, besides she would question me about the old man.
Joey said.
I have an idea. Lets feed them to a fish, then when she cleans it, she will find the coins herself.
Cindra replied.
That's such a clever plan, lets do it.
Joey said. Cindra slid off the dock into the water and was gone for several minutes, then returned with a large splashing fish. Cindra held the fish tightly as Joey fed the fish the gold coins. She rubbed the fish belly to make sure they'd stay there. Joey smiled and gave Cindra a kiss on her lips and she kissed him back. thank you very much Cindra. I have to go. I'll see you tomorrow.
he said.
You're welcome. I'll see you then.
she replied.
She watched as he left the docks. There was no one she knew who was as kind and thoughtful as Joey. Every time she was with him, her heart would swell. Cindra had been in love with him from the first time they met. She swam to her seahorse and then back home. A merman guard stood by the castles entrance. Cindra tied her seahorse to the post.
Your father has been looking for you.
the guard said.
Thank you.
she replied.
Cindra swam in and through the hallways, until she reached the throne room. Neptunis and Aaron were arguing. Cindra floated at the entrance unnoticed. Aaron was Neptunis's adviser.
We need to send the merman guard to attack the floating vessels that started drilling in the very deep waters in the gulf.
Aaron said.
No. I don't think they'll be a problem Aaron.
Neptunis replied.
They use robots to drill that deep. They have no right doing things that they can't put their hands on.
Aaron said.
Discussion closed.
Neptunis replied when he saw Cindra at the entrance.
Daddy, we aren't going to war with the lands-people are we?
Cindra asked.
Of course not darling. Uncle Aaron and I were just discussing things.
Neptunis answered.
Back on land Joey walked in the back door carrying the large fish. He handed it to his mother who's name was Joan.
Joey, this is a heavy fish. We'll be able to eat for a week off of this one.
Joan said.
It's the largest one I've ever brought home.
Joey replied with a smile.
Joan searched the kitchen drawer to find her sharpest knife. When she started to clean the fish, the knife hit one of the gold coins with a metallic sound. She carefully searched, because a big fish can swallow just about anything. Even large hooks. Joan pulled the four gold coins out and hollered for Joey.
What mom?
he asked.
Come look at this!
Joan hollered.
Joey looked in the sink. can I see one of them?
he asked.
Joan rinsed the gold coins off, then gave it to him. He pulled out his phone and took several pictures of the gold coins that were in the fish.
I wonder how much they're worth.
Joan said.
I can look it up on the Internet.
Joey replied.
Joan continued to clean the fish. She wrapped up the huge fish steaks and set them in the freezer. Joey walked into the kitchen with a large smile on his face.
Mom, sit down.
he said.
She sat. there not worth a whole lot, aren't they?
Joan questioned.
Joey chuckled.
they aren't ordinary gold coins, they are pirates gold coins and each one is worth a hundred thousand dollars."
Are you sure?
she asked.
Yes. That's the starting bid price I set on ebay.
Joey answered.
This means we don't have to go into work tonight.
Joan said.
Yeah. I'm tired of cleaning out old man Campbell's chicken coops at night.
Joey replied.
Joey's phone
