I have been writing mystery and fiction books since 1982. I have never considered having any published until now. My career has been in writing technical documents for the defense industry. By profession I am a mechanical engineer, P.E. I have six grand children.. During the summer months, I spend a lot of time in the mountains of New Mexico. Watching wildlife and observing the ecology. i also enjoy riding my 4-wheeler. I built a cabin by myself, just above a stream filled with trout, perhaps i should say am building, I have been working on it for twenty years and it is still not finished, but it is livable, it has electricity, running water and a septic system. With that, I am happy to live there in the summer months and for a week or two in the winter, but I have found that I am not much of a "snow" person.I do hope you read and enjoy my books as much as I enjoyed writing them! Thanks for visiting my page.Joe Bob Newman

This Trilogy is dedicated to my wife Linda. She is a beautiful woman that has been a tremendous influence on my life. I want to thank her very much for all her advice and assistance. We had a lot of fun together while I wrote this book. The character Loretta, in this book, originally was based on my wife Linda. But Loretta, digressed into her own character, later in the books. I could not have written these books with out her love and attentiveness. I love you Linda!

    PROLOGUE

Larry Lee Lawrence and his wife Loretta Louise live between Dallas and Fort Worth Texas in the not so small city of Arlington. They have three children and six grandchildren. They practically worship the ground their grandchildren walk on. Larry and Loretta have been in love with each other since she was fourteen. They married when she was seventeen. They have been married for thirty five years. They have a big nice home in Arlington and a small cozy cabin in the mountains of New Mexico. They travel a lot and spend most of their time together. Their love has endured many hardships; including Loretta’s near deadly bought of pneumonia twenty years earlier. Larry never left her side, even though she was extremely contagious.

They both have worked for large companies and are now retired. Larry is fifty five. Loretta is fifty two. She has aged well. She looks about forty. Larry is proud of Loretta and gives her pretty much what ever she wants. She is average height, blonde hair and flashing green eyes. They say your eyes are the path to your heart. In her case that is exactly the case. Her usual soft green eyes tell the story of a person with a soft, loving heart. But, let her temper surface and she is a ball of fire. Without realizing it, she has become the matriarch of the family.

Larry has not aged quite so well. About ten years ago he fought and won a deadly battle with cancer. He is now cancer free. Larry has steely green eyes. He frequently looks angry or mad, but he is a softee at heart as his grand kids have found out. They manipulate him unmercifully. Larry loves his family deeply and defends them fiercely. He is without question the patriarch of his family.

For all their medical problems, they are both in good physical shape. They dote on each other excessively. They are the picture of a loving, complete family.

Larry has worked in the defense industry and seen many things that he can’t or won’t talk about. Larry is a lot of fun to talk to and has many good friends. He rarely meets someone that he doesn’t like or who doesn’t like him.

As opposed to Loretta’s good looks, Larry has a rugged, mildly handsome look about himself. One of his friends has called him a survivor! Many times Larry has proved this exclamation to be true. He has survived many times when a lesser man would have succumbed. Larry makes friends easily and once you are his friend, he will do anything for you. He values friendship highly. Loretta says that Larry is hard headed, but she has her ways of manipulating him.

Somewhat like Larry, Loretta has many friends. Most of them close. She has much practical experience, and is at home either in the office place or the kitchen. She has become a take charge kind of person. On top of her good looks, most people would say that Loretta is very smart.

Larry and Loretta have an ideal kind of marriage. They often say, Opposites attract, but they are similar in more ways than they can imagine. Often times they just sit and stare at each other, saying nothing. Their hearts speak for them.

They have invested well and have accumulated a rather large financial estate. They live well and buy each other gifts almost continuously. They go out to eat a lot and spend money on their grandchildren like the money is about to go out of style. In spite of spending money heavily, Larry watches their finances like a hawk. He makes sure they have plenty of money at all times.

Needless to say they live the good life that most people only dream about. They are extremely happy with each other and have no idea that their world is about to change. Larry is about to meet someone that will turn his entire world, upside down. Will Loretta accept the change or will she fight back? If she does, will she succumb to another man’s temptation?

This is a riveting story with many directional changes. You won’t get lost, but you may get angry. When Larry gets in over his head, you may want to shout at him! But, he will get under your skin.

Behind his back, some people have looked at him and called him, a man’s man. Larry does have one weakness that all men seem to have, beautiful women.

Loretta is the picture of modesty, but she is in for some changes. She is totally faithful to Larry and always has been. She loves him more than anything in the world. However there is a crack in her armor. Will she remain the woman that she wants to be and thinks she is?

    CHAPTER 1 -- THE MEETING

My wife Loretta and I were attending a wedding that we had been invited to several months earlier. The wedding was for the daughter of some old friends of ours, the Anderson’s. Their daughter, Amanda, was a 22-year-old beauty. This was her first marriage and she looked absolutely awesome. She was decked out in all white. She looked like a princess all dressed up with a tiara and a gown train. She had long blonde hair, was about five foot two, and had a fabulous figure. We had known Amanda since she was born. We had just recently met her husband to be, and he seemed like a nice enough young man. His name was Marvin Thomas, and he was 24 years old. They were getting married near the Alamo in San Antonio, Texas. The Pastor who was marrying them was a long time family friend of ours.

Amanda’s Dad, Greg, was having trouble with the wedding, not so much paying for it, as giving her away. He was near tears and was visibly in distress. This was his only daughter and giving her away in marriage was too much for his brain to handle. He had blessed the marriage until it came time for the actual ceremony, then he changed his mind. It wasn’t that he did not like the young man; he just could not give Amanda away to somebody else. He acted like she was going away forever.

Amanda’s Mother, Laura, was about as happy as she could be, she was busy making certain that the guests were all doing okay; she did not have enough time to worry about Greg. She watched him occasionally and just shook her head. She was being as gracious as she knew how and was talking to as many guests as she could. She was determined to make the wedding a success. Laura was a very attractive woman in her own right; she was medium height and had curly blonde hair. She was slim and trim and appeared to work out a lot. She was dressed in a silver gown that sparkled in the sun light. Her green eyes were bright with life.

Greg was bending the ears of all his old friends, of which I happened to be one. At times he just blubbered, making absolutely no sense at all. It was sad to just watch him walk around looking for a shoulder to cry on. Greg was normally a very strong man, but this day his weakness had surfaced. His daughter! He just could not give his baby girl up.

I could not believe that Greg was so upset; I could imagine him being scared but not so upset about giving his daughter away. Behind his back, I had laughed at him, but to his face I had been sympathetic. I had known Greg for many years and had never seen him act this way. I knew that he was serious in his concerns and that he did not know what to do. Greg did not care what anyone thought about the way he was acting. He was upset and wanted everyone to know it.

I had been happy to give my daughter away and let someone else take care of her. Not that she was any trouble for me, but I looked at her now as someone else’s responsibility. Whenever I did see her, which was often, it was always a happy occasion.

With tears in his eyes, Greg came up to me, Larry, I just don’t think I can do it, how did you do it? He looked at me so expectantly.

I said to him, Greg, she is getting married; not going to Mars, I bet you will see more of her now than you did before she got married. This did not seem to appease Greg and he moved onto another friend. Greg was making the rounds; no one was telling him what he wanted to hear. Fortunately he had a lot of friends at the wedding. None of his friends knew what it was Greg wanted to hear.

I wanted to tell him what he wanted to hear, but I had no idea what it was. I was as dumbfounded as the rest of his friends were.

The wedding went off without a hitch. Greg walked Amanda down the aisle, crying the entire way, and when the minister asked Who gives this woman away? Greg stuttered, but did manage to mumble, Her M-Mother and I d-do,

I thoroughly enjoyed the wedding. There were so many attractive women to look at. The bridesmaids were all beautiful. The little flower girl threw flowers at everyone and everything, occasionally hitting the floor. The little boy who was the ring bearer, made it about half way down the aisle, and then turned, and ran back to his Mommy. He had to really be coaxed to go all the way down the long aisle. One of the groomsmen had to hold him once he got to the end of the aisle. They were related, but I did not know how!

After the wedding, was a fancy meal. Loretta and I sat with Dan and Shannon Roberts, some more old friends of ours. We had known them for more than twenty-five years. Both daughters of Dan and Shannon were married, so they had been through this before, just as we had. They had two little grand daughters that had Dan wrapped around their little fingers.

The food was fabulous and the entertainment was a good sized band. The band was not too loud, for which I was thankful. All the noise was starting to bother me. I was used to peace and quiet, except when my grand kids came over, and fortunately they usually did not stay too long.

After the meal, was the reception. Everyone was letting their hair down. The band had been playing soft music since just before the meal, and then they started playing some country western music. We all got up and danced to a number of songs. We were all getting hot, so, we decided to go outside and get a drink and cool off. There was an open air bar outside.

Dan, Shannon, Loretta and I were just standing outside, with a drink. We were waiting for a table in the courtyard, just talking, when people started screaming and running out the doors. It was pandemonium. At first we thought something planned had happened, and then we realized that something terrible was happening.

There was a large, two inch natural gas line in the kitchen. It fed all the ovens. It was connected by a union that joined two horizontal pipes together. The union was under stress, and suddenly the union broke just above the ovens, it spewed gas all over the kitchen. The chefs, cooks and servers all started running out into the reception area. They were screaming Fire, and everyone in the reception area began to panic. There was no smoke, but the smell of natural gas was everywhere. People were jammed at the doorways, all trying to get out at the same time.

The gas built up in the kitchen area, and reached the explosive level, and then exploded with a thunderous boom and a giant fireball. The kitchen wall blew out into the reception area, trapping several people. The fireball blew through the building knocking everything and everyone down. All the windows were blown out. Smoke was rapidly filling the building. The kitchen was completely ablaze. The electricity and lights went off almost immediately. The building did not have a sprinkler system so the fire progressed at its own rate.

Dan and I dusted ourselves off, and checked on Shannon and Loretta, then looked at each other and ran into the building. I tripped over something and fell hard to the floor. I looked to see what it was that I had tripped over, and it was a woman, her hair was on fire. I took my jacket off and smothered the small flames, and picked her up and carried her outside. I checked her and she was not breathing. I checked her neck and could feel a heart beat. I moved her over and laid her down in the shade. I pinched off her nose, put my other hand under her neck; I put my mouth over her mouth, and began doing CPR on her.

She did not respond immediately and I could taste acid smoke in her mouth. I figured that her lungs must have been burned and that she was dying. I did not know what else to do for her. I put my head on her chest and could still hear her heart beating, so kept up the CPR. I was breathing for her. I slapped her face and talked to her saying Breathe, damn it, breathe, then continued the CPR. If I could just keep her alive until the paramedics came.

I was breathing hard. The taste in my mouth was terrible. I was about to give up the CPR, when suddenly she coughed and jerked. Loretta was holding one of her hands, and was patting it. She reached over and patted me on the head, and said, Good job, Larry! I was amazed!

The woman began to gag and then vomit, so I rolled her onto her side. Loretta used some napkins that she had, to clean off the lady’s mouth. I pulled my jacket off her head. The fire in her hair was out and she did not seem to have serious burns, just some redness. It looked to me as only first degree burns. I checked her for burns over her body and she seemed fine. Her face was covered in soot, but did not seem burned. She was moving both her arms and legs so I figured that nothing was broken.

This was my first time to really stop and look at her. Her hair was a mess, she was pale and her face had dirt and grime all over it, but I could tell that she had nice features. She had on a strapless white dress that came well below her knees. Of all things to notice, I noticed that she had a tiny waist and small ankles. She had on pink lipstick, which I figured that I must have all over my face. I subconsciously wiped my face and lips. I figured that I must be a sight myself.

I could hear sirens in the distance. I held her in a sitting up position. She was conscious but not able to hold her self up. Her vomiting had made me nauseous, so I moved her slightly so that I would not have to look at the vomit. The whole episode seemed to have taken hours but in reality took only minutes. I checked my watch to see what time it was, it was three-thirty-five.

I was holding her tightly in a sitting position, with my arms around her, when a man ran up to us, and said, My God honey, I thought you were dead. I was so scared, how are you? He was a much older man. I could not tell if he was her husband or her father.

She did not respond, so he looked at me.

I told him what had happened and that I had done CPR on her, and that she might have some lung damage along with some burns on her head. She was lucky that we had gotten her outside so quickly and started CPR; she should not have any brain damage.

He was very appreciative, and introduced himself as Bill LeBossey. He said, My wife’s name is Fran.

I told him, my name is Larry and this is my wife Loretta. Now I knew that he was her husband.

Loretta went to guide the paramedics over to us. She took off as fast as her high heels would let her run. I listened to the fading clickety clack of her heels.

Mrs. LeBossey looked very confused. Her husband checked her over, and also came to the same conclusion that I had. She had soot all over her face and clothes, but we could not find any other injuries on her. She must have been knocked down by the explosion, and just her hair had caught fire.

The paramedics checked her out and then she was loaded onto a stretcher and placed into one of the ambulances, and it sped off to the hospital. Bill ran for his car to follow the ambulance. The fire trucks began to arrive. There was a long line of trucks coming to the fire.

I got to watch the firemen battle the fire. The building was a total loss. Too bad, it was a historical landmark. I thoroughly enjoyed watching the firemen do their thing. I had always wanted to be a fireman, and enjoyed watching them fight the fire.

Dan had not found anyone to bring out, it seemed most of the help and guests had made it to safety on their own. Dan was driven out by the smoke and flames. There were three bodies found by the firemen and brought out in black bags.

It was nearly dark, by the time everything settled down, and I was worn out. So Loretta and I decided to spend the night in a motel. Dan and Shannon decided to get a room too. We found a motel near the hospital. I wanted to check on the woman that I had carried out. I had ruined my suit and was glad that I had some other clothes to wear.

I told Dan the name of the lady that I had carried out and he knew the couple and suggested that we go to the hospital and check on her. After getting our rooms, we took showers and cleaned up and then went to the hospital.

We checked in at the information desk, and found that the woman was out of the Emergency Room and had already been given a room, 607. We went to the elevator and rode it to the sixth floor. We found the room, and knocked on the door, and then slowly walked in. I recognized the man, but not the woman.

She did not look like the woman that I had carried out. She was very attractive and was smiling at us. When her husband told her that I was the one that given her CPR, she shook my hand for a very long time, she would not let go of it. She just kept looking at my face, then she started to cry and between sobs, she said, You saved my life, thank you very much.

I was embarrassed and did not know what to say, but did say, Your welcome, and then added, It was my pleasure. I started to make a joke about kissing her, but fortunately kept my mouth shut. For once I used good common sense. Loretta was beaming.

She asked for my phone number and address. I introduced my wife to her. She was very gracious to Loretta, but did not seem to be able to keep her eyes off of me. I was very uncomfortable with the way that she looked at me. I was not sure that I wanted this woman to have my phone number and address.

She asked, Could you guys come back tomorrow, I will be more presentable. Her head was wrapped in bandages, and she had an oxygen tube connected to her nose. I could not understand why being more presentable was so important to her. Her face now looked like she had a mild sunburn. It was hot pink all over. All that she had on was a hospital gown, perhaps that was what was bothering her.

Bill got me aside, and just kept pumping my hand and thanking me for saving his wife’s life.

I kept telling him, Your welcome. But he just kept on thanking me. He was clearly about as happy as he could be, under the circumstances.

About that time, Greg and Laura came in. The four of us excused ourselves and left the hospital. I was happy to have done something good for someone else. I was pleased with myself. I had given someone CPR, and had done it effectively. It was the first time that I had ever done CPR. I was thankful to the Red Cross for teaching me how to do it.

We went out to dinner together, and ate a good meal at a Mexican place. Loretta and I had margaritas. I was feeling like I had done something very important, and I had. I had saved someone’s life. It was starting to soak into my thick skull.

That night the four of us went to the motel’s lounge and had a drink. Shannon just had a coke, as she does not drink alcohol. We discussed the explosion and the fire and wondered who the three people were that had died. We did not find out until the next day, but they turned out to be staff of the restaurant. The three people had been trapped by the kitchen wall and suffocated. We were sorry that they had died, but were thankful that it had not been any of our friends.

All the guests had got out right away except for two, one being the lady that I had helped, the other a man, who got out on his own. There were a large number of people with burns, who were treated and released. As far as I knew, Mrs. LeBossey was the only guest that wound up being admitted to the hospital.

Dan told us that he knew the LeBosseys’ quite well. Bill was the owner of a large GM dealership in San Antonio, and Fran was a stay at home wife. They had only been married a little over a year. Dan and Shannon had gone to their wedding.

Dan had known Fran for a long time, but had just met Bill at their wedding. Dan had become close friends with them.

The next morning we went back to the hospital to check on Mrs. LeBossey and found her up and about, she was going to be discharged later in the day. She had on regular clothes. Her face was bright red, like a bad sun burn.

She seemed smitten with me. She wanted to hear the whole story of how I found her, and had gotten her out and did CPR, and revived her. I recited the story in as much detail as I could remember. I left the vomiting out.

She asked me, Would it be all right if I called you next week?

I looked at Loretta, and back to Mrs. LeBossey and said, Sure, I want to know how your recovery goes. I was just now getting to realize that she was more than just pretty. She was beautiful. I gave her our phone number and address. I was a little more comfortable giving it to her today. Not that her looks had anything to do with it. She had the most intense blue eyes that I had ever seen. I was pretty sure that, with makeup on, she would be the most beautiful woman that I had ever seen. Even without makeup, she was beautiful.

We all bid each other good bye, and left, and started the drive back to Arlington. We drove pretty much together and stopped at a restaurant and had lunch.

Dan said, Larry, you really made quite an impression on Fran, she is quite a woman. Dan was trying to make a point, but it went completely over my head.

I had no idea what Dan was getting at, so I was just quiet. I knew that she had been thankful, but was not surprised by anything else. I thought that I would have probably reacted the same way.

Shannon and Loretta were chatting back and forth, so I just listened to them. I was not paying any attention to what they were saying. I just wanted to get home to some peace and quiet. I had a lot on my mind.

We got back in the cars and started the drive back home. Loretta was quiet for a long time, and then asked. What did you think of Mrs. LeBossey?

I looked at Loretta and said, I don’t know, she seemed fine to me, what are you driving at?

Loretta said back, She seemed rather infatuated with you!

I replied, I’m sorry, I did not pick up on that at all. What was the big deal I wondered?

She said, Well everyone but you did then. That is what Dan was trying to tell you.

I did not know what to say, but did say, Do you think there is a problem, then?

She said, I don’t know, when she calls, we shall see. Loretta was obviously being very protective.

This gave me a lot to think about. I was certain that the lady was just very thankful, that was all. I had not detected anything going on between us. The lady had just seemed extremely appreciative. Anyway, if there had been anything out of the ordinary going on, I would have just ignored it. She was clearly under a lot of stress.

Sure enough, the next Wednesday, the phone rang and I answered it, Hello?

A feminine voice said, Mr. Lawrence, this is Fran LeBossey.

I answered back, Good to hear from you Mrs. LeBossey, how are you feeling?

She said, First, please call me Fran, all my friends do, and second, I am doing fine, what hair I had, I had cut off so I have a burr hair cut. I look rather silly. My breathing is a little difficult, but other than that I am doing fine, thanks to you!

I said, Your welcome, I am just glad that I was there and able to help you, and please call me Larry! I was trying hard to imagine her in a burr hair cut.

Larry, you saved my life, I will be forever grateful to you. My husband and I will be in Arlington in a few weeks and we would like to take you and your wife out to dinner, she said.

Well, you don’t have to, I said, But we would love to go to dinner with you.

She seemed elated, How about Friday week, about eight o’clock?

That works for us, I responded. Loretta was listening to every word that I said. She shook her head okay. I gave Mrs. LeBossey directions to our house. We broke off the conversation, with her thanking me again.

Loretta smiled at me, and said, I was expecting something like this, as a ‘thank you’!

The next Friday finally rolled around, and at almost exactly eight P.M., a Cadillac pulled into our drive way and Bill and a blonde headed lady got out. I watched them out the window. This woman had shoulder length blonde hair. I wondered who she was, she was very shapely. Then I realized that it was Fran with a wig on. A very expensive wig, it looked perfectly natural.

If I had not recognized how attractive she was in the hospital, she wasn’t just pretty, she was very beautiful. I was stunned at her looks.

They rang the doorbell and we reintroduced ourselves, using our first names, and were then ready to go out to eat. We all climbed into the nicest car that I had ever been in, and they took us to a very nice seafood restaurant. We thoroughly enjoyed their company. They could not have been nicer.

I paid attention this time, and there were no overtones from Fran towards me at all. Loretta smiled all the time and looked radiant. She seemed proud of me, and I was proud of her.

After dinner, we drove back to our house and we had them come in and visit for a while. They were very courteous, and friendly. Bill was very talkative and I enjoyed the conversation with him. Loretta and Fran seemed to get along great and went in the kitchen and fixed us all a dessert. I was trying hard to hear what they were talking about, but they seemed to be talking in hushed tones. They brought out the dessert and we all set around eating the strawberries and whipped cream. Then Fran said, This thing is too hot, and she took off the wig. She did have a burr haircut. She looked like a cancer patient who had lost their hair to chemo! It took some getting used to, to get accustomed to her without hair.

We invited them to our house for breakfast the next morning and they kindly accepted. At the end of the evening we all hugged and shook hands. Fran held onto me just a little bit too long and I could feel the warmth of her body. Perhaps I was imagining it but she really seemed to conform to my body. I had to admit that it was a sensuous experience.

We watched them drive off and Loretta said, That was nice. I was expecting her to say more, but that was all that she said.

The next morning we had breakfast, and Fran asked if she and I could walk around the pool. So, we went for a walk, by ourselves, around our pool. I noticed that her hand bumped into my side several times, other than that, it was a pleasant walk.

She thanked me again for saving her life, and took my hand, and said, If there ever is anything that I can do for you, you just have to ask! She was gently stroking my hand.

I did not know what to say, it came across as a proposition, and I was not sure how to handle it. I was glad Loretta had not heard it. This was one very forward woman.

Finally I said, It was my pleasure to help you! You owe me nothing; I bet you would have done the same thing for me!

She smiled a beautiful smile and said, I hope nothing like that ever happens to you. It certainly gives you a new perspective on life, and we walked back to the door, and we went into the house.

Bill seemed eager to leave, but stayed long enough for me to invite them to a pool party that we were having, and I went ahead and asked them to plan on spending the night with us.

    This made Loretta very unhappy!

After they left, Loretta let me know that, You should check with me, before you invite people to spend the night with us.
