I'm an author, by nature, and by intended trade. Intended trade, because I've yet to make enough off of it to earn a living, so need to worry about things like day jobs. Before I am an author though, I am a Christian. And that means there are things I'm willing to die for; if there's nothing that matters so much to you to be willing to die for it, what then are you *living* for?

Author's Note: The Kyrian school system operates differently from 'modern' school systems in real life; primary school runs for six years, from six to twelve years old, and secondary (high) school runs for four years, from thirteen to sixteen. As military service in Kyris is compulsory, many young men and women enlist immediately thereafter to serve their 2-5 years, depending on which form of service they select or are eligible for.

Faras Corden's first day at school was a bittersweet experience. All of six years old, his mother dropped him off at the most expensive of six different elementary schools available to students in the city of Torh. As he looked around the terrace on which the school's grounds rested, he noticed that every single other child that he could see was being escorted into the school's central building by one or both of their parents, except for the orphans. It was something that he was used to seeing in most places he went, and as was becoming accustomed to. He simply followed the other children (and their parents), took hold of the straps of his backpack with both hands, and watched.

He saw some children running around gleefully with their friends, while their parents chatted with each other. He saw some children sulking, either glaring at their parents or refusing to look at them as they did so. He saw some parents berating their children, and some children berating their parents, both to varying degrees of success. He saw a handful of orphans, under the escort of a lesser shepherd from one of the nearby chapels. All of these were things that he had seen before; what ended up holding his attention more than anything else, was the hawk that had taken roost on one of the trees on the school grounds.

As he followed the gradually migrating mass of children and adults into the school's central building, he found himself hoping that he'd be able to see the bird from wherever the crowd was going inside of the building; he ended up being disappointed.

Corden, Faras, The administrative secretary called, and Faras stood from chair he'd idly been waiting on, before walking over to approach the young woman's desk.

...Where are your parents? The pretty brunette asked he stood in front of her desk.

Faras shook his head, and handed her the envelope that his mother had given him. The secretary took it somewhat hesitantly, before opening it and reading through the contents. A few minutes later, exactly what Faras had learned to expect came; a pitying look, a sad attempt at a smile, and then a referral on to the next adult who would be in charge of him until one of his parents returned to collect him.

    He was used to it.

By the time that Faras' father came to pick him up after his first day at school, he was extensively familiar with the grounds, such as they were. The city of Torh, the 'middle city' of Kyris, was built in a valley that had had very little level ground naturally, and thus, as it had expanded from the village it had originally been, the people of Torh had terraced their way up the slopes of the surrounding mountains. Faras' new school was built on the eleventh terrace, East of the city's core, putting it three-hundred some feet above the valley floor, with a clear view of most of the city below and across the valley from it.

Once he had finished exploring the grounds (central building, gymnasium, mechanical building, greenhouse, and the 'expansion' building which housed additional classrooms), he
