About this ebook

When John opened his eyes he could see nothing but he felt something running down his face from the top of his head when he felt it he knew it was blood.
Then he felt his feet were very cold and he lifted his left foot and it dawned on him his feet were in the water.
Then he remembered Susan he put out his hand to see if she was still next to him; his hand fell on her face.
Then he heard a moan he said ‘Susan are you awake or not’
She answered him with a whisper ‘Yes John what happened.’
‘We crashed into I don’t know what but the water we hit saved us from total break-up.’
Then John shouted ‘Is there anyone awake or are we the only two.’
Then a voice from somewhere up the front shouted ‘No there are one or two up here and I hope someone has a torch handy.’
Then someone up at the front end of the cabin lit up a cigarette lighter up.
John could see some people he shouted ‘Listen everyone stay still and make yourselves as comfortable as you can we can't do anything until daylight so please do as I say.’
While John had been talking he had felt Susan fiddling around and when he sat back down in his seat she said ‘John take this.’
When he put out his hand he was very grateful to Susan she had put a hot cup of coffee in his hand.
‘I don’t know where you got it from but I think your an angel and that's for sure, but what about you.’
‘Oh don’t worry about me I have two cups and feel this.’
She put the cup out to find his hand and he felt the heat of the cup and that satisfied him.
Then he sat back and to his joy he felt her put her arm through his and he thought that he had been all his life without a girl and now he maybe had found one this had to happen.
They talked in whispers all over the plane.
Nobody got any sleep it was impossible.
Then very slowly daylight began to filter into the cabin.
John looked to where Zag was seated and he did not like what he saw Zag was lying with his eyes fully open and there was no movement of any kind.
John stood up and said to Susan ‘you just stay here Susan while I go take a look at Zag.

    Chapter 1

    THE PARTY

The day finally came when John Wingate was to go on the trip of a lifetime, John had come on an extended holiday from Dundee in Scotland.

John was a fire ranger in the forests of his homeland he loved the open country and he could spend weeks camping in the forests.

He had dreamed for years of taking a holiday in Canada but could never afford it.

One day his boss George Pattison came to his cabin what he had called his office for a number of years and he told John what he wanted to do.

When George saw John sitting in his office he put on his sad face as he approached.

John looked up and said ‘Oh no what’s coming boss.’

‘Well John I’m afraid I want you to do a spot of travelling I’m sorry John.’

‘Oh where are we talking about George?’

    ‘Oh It’s just Canada.’

Johns face lit up and he almost shouted ‘You’re kidding me.’

‘No John we have to send one of our rangers to Canada and I knew that you always wanted to go there so as far as I was concerned you were the best man for the job, and the job is that you go on a training trip into the mountains with a fire ranger from Canada for two weeks then after that you can take a holiday and enjoy Canada till your hearts content.’

‘George you don’t know what this means to me Canada phew that’s great.’

‘Ok then John you have to leave on September 14 so that gives you two weeks to sort everything out, I will send Willie Chamber’s up here until you return.’

‘That’s if I come back George.’

When George left to go back to the city John sat down and for the rest of that day he daydreamed about Canada.

Ever since he was seventeen he had dreamed of going to the big country.

He was working at the present time in the Trossachs and he

would have to go to the biggest town nearest to him, and that was Oban and looked for a post office so that he could renew his passport.

And at the same time book a holiday in Canada after he would be finished with his training

Then he went shopping for some new gear that he would need in Canada.

He lived with his father they got on very well his mother had died three years previously.

On the day of his departure his dad came to him and gave him an envelope and said ‘Here John I want you to have this just in case you need something in a hurry.’

John opened the envelope and found inside two hundred pounds.

He turned to face his father ‘Hold it Dad I don’t need this the Forestry are footing the bill.’

‘Yes John I know that but take it anyway you never know when you may need it, you know I don’t need it John I’m better off than you think.’

Then the final day arrived and he left his old Dad standing at the door waving his hand goodbye.

The taxi took him to Glasgow airport where he was to board a plane to Vancouver Canada.

When John had booked in at his booking point he still had a couple of hours to kill before he had to board the plane.

He decided to get something for the flight he went to the airport shop he bought a book on survival in the wilderness.

He was browsing in the shop when his eyes fell on a knife in a display case the knife was a very large Swiss Army knife and it was a good six inches long and it had just about everything on it.

It had a screwdriver, tin opener and a corkscrew and about six blades of different size.

He thought that he would go ask the lady at the counter if he bought the knife would he be allowed to take it with him on board the plane.

He approached the lady ‘I wonder if you can help me, you see I have taken a liking to the Swiss knife.’ He pointed to case with the knife in it.

Then he said ‘And I am flying to Canada, the thing is would I be allowed to take it on board with me.’

‘Well sir it can be done for a slight charge of just one pound, now what happens you pay for the knife here then one of the staff take it to the head steward on board your flight then its locked in a security safe on board then you collect it when you are disembarking the plane.’

‘That’s great I will pay for it now thank you.’

He had to leave his name and his boarding pass number then he returned to the main airport.

When he took his seat he noticed that the plane was only half full, he had a window seat and there were two empty seats next to him.

He also noticed that across the aisle sat a young woman he could see that she was quite good looking she had jet black hair.

Then she caught him looking at her and she smiled.

Then she turned and looked out of the window.

He thought to himself that if Dad had been there he would be shaking his head and telling him to go talk to her.

He had a smile on his face when he thought about his Dad.

As time went by on the flight John found himself looking at the young woman more and more.

And when she fell asleep he could look at her for half an hour.

He was thinking that some lucky young man was going to wed her one day.

It was a long trip and he felt very tired at the end of it and he was glad that he would not meet the fire ranger until the next morning when he would call for John at his hotel.

When they landed and it was time to get to his feet and leave the plane.

The young woman got up first then she said ‘Goodbye.’

He noted that she was English north country he thought.

He collected his knife and left the plane.

Then when he went into the airport coffee shop he lost sight of her and he swore to himself and said to himself I should have asked her to dinner or something he could not get her out of his mind.
