    DEDICATION

I dedicate this to my sister and my brother. Without them, none of this would have been possible.

    Chapter 1 – THE PROTAGONIST

The man stood in an empty room. Alone except for a bed, a chair, and a table for eating. He opened his eyes for the first time and spoke his first words.

    Where am I?

A thought came in a whisper of pencil scratches, and then he knew.

I am home. He nodded in confirmation and asked another question, Who am I?

Once again, the room was filled with the quiet sound of pencil scratches, and just as the scratches had ended, his question was answered.

    David? Yes, I am David.

He nodded again before asking his final question, Who are you?

The pencil was silent for a long time and David was left blank. He had no thoughts of his own and no words unless the pencil fed them to him. He had only been alive for a brief moment, but he already knew that to be true. Finally, the pencil set back into motion, and it responded through his voice.

    I am your writer.

David nodded again, but the pencil didn’t stop there. It continued on and on, and in pieces, David began to grow feelings and the walls of his room began to paint over with his favorite shade of blue, though he had no idea what blue was. He knew he had blond hair and green eyes, which he inherited from his mother’s side. He had never met his father, though he had little knowledge that he even had one to begin with.

The feelings running through him were a mixture of happiness and contentment, and, as the pencil finished its final scratches, he was heading toward the newly created kitchen and dining area. Mid-step though, he froze, hands poised and already reaching for the fridge. He blinked a few times and attempted to move, but found he could not. Then, his world began to rustle, and the sound of paper moving struck a chord of fear in his heart. Then, his world turned black.

He had no concept of time or of really anything, except for what his writer had given him regarding his lineage and his favorite color. However, his writer had also given him much more than that. She had given him feelings, something which fueled his mind and gave him his own thoughts. So, he thought. He had fears and one of them was the dark, which he was stuck in. His writer had not realized it, but she had put him in a terrifying situation.

He vowed to let her know the next time she started to write. Eventually she did return, and the familiar scratch of the pencil set him back in motion. His hand finally met with the handle of the fridge, and she made sure he felt how cold the metal was in his palm. She could make him feel things physically, as well. This sparked a feeling of admiration in him, a feeling of warmth and awe all mixed together. It was exhilarating. Regardless, he opened the fridge and peered inside. His eyes immediately fell on an already made sandwich, which he knew was his favorite kind, but what kind - he had no clue.

Still, she made him look for it. His eyes scanned every shelf, and his body heaved a sigh of frustration over not finding what he craved, though none of those actions or thoughts were any of his own. His writer had him almost give up, when his eyes finally fell on his most coveted prize. He let out a small breath of surprise before reaching in and taking it in his hands. He made his
