Chapter One: Introduction
Blade Runner
is a science fiction thriller film. It is and American dystopian movie directed by Ridley Scott.
The film was released in 1982. The main stars in the movie were Harrison Ford, Rutger Hauer, Sean Young, and Edward James.
The story is loosely based on the novel Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?
which was written by Philip K. Dick. The screenplay of the film was written by Hampton Fancher and David Peoples.
The story of the film revolves around a dystopian Los Angeles in November 2019. Tyrell Corporation is a very powerful manufacturing company which produces genetically engineered organic robots called Replicants which happen to be visually indistinguishable from adult normal human beings.
There are some other mega corporations around the world and they also produce such robots.
Although the use of the Replicants is banned on Earth, they are exclusively used for destructive and menial tasks in some of the world colonies.
Replicants can’t tolerate this ban and they defy the ban and come back to Earth. They are hunted down and retired by the police special operatives known as Blade Runners.
The focus of the plot stays on a desperate group of recently escaped Replicants who happen to be hiding in Los Angeles. The focus is also on the burnt out expert Blade Runner, Rick Deckard. Harrison Ford has played the role of Rick Deckard. He is not interested in taking any more assignments to hunt down Replicants, but he eventually accepts one more assignment to hunt them down.
The critics were generally divided after the release of Blade Runner.
Some of the critics did not like the fast pace of the move while some others enjoyed its thematic complexity.
