About this ebook

This EZ e-book was created with the (free) Open Office (word processor) at absolutely no cost what-so-ever. It will walk you through the entire Smashwords e-book formatting process. You'll be finished formatting by the end of chapter 2. Use practically any full-featured word processor, (Macs too). This tiny e-book will make the e-book formatting job easier and faster no matter what word processor you choose, including Microsoft Word. (Secret: Open Office is free and actually easier to use than Word.)

Microsoft Word costs $109. Many of us can't or won't purchase it. I refused, and vowed to make the formatting job both cheaper and easier. It took six months but I've done it! I want to share the knowledge and save you 5 months, 29 days and 22 hours! This tiny e-book will show you how to completely format most e-books in under two hours. It has been carefully prepared with the computer novice (or computer-phobe) in mind.

Chapter's 1 3, and 4 will easily teach (in great detail) what you need to know and more. Chapter 2 walks you through the entire formatting process. Your e-book will be finished by the end of Chapter 2. You'll refer to the other chapters for things like learning to Highlight a heading, nuking and numerous computer-phope explanations that make it all easy as pie for any one who can turn a computer on and click a link.

What's the secret? I've setup (free download) templates that super-simplify everything. I've also discovered that F-key and Ctrl/codes eliminate 90% of the discussion and confusion.

It's simple! Load a template, (your choice). Delete the template text. Paste a nuked (plain text ) book or document where the template text was. Highlight a phrase or heading click (Ctrl/1, 2 or 3.), your choice. That heading is set. Then bookmark it in 10 seconds and Hyperlink it in 12 seconds. Move on to the next heading. That one is done! Step through your book one heading at a time, saving it as a Word 1997/2000 .doc file. Bam! You're finished! Go to the Meatgrinder! Your e-book will be available and for sale to millions an hour later.

The secrets I've discovered simplify the entire process by a factor of 10 saving you money and time.

You'll set all your Headings, insert bookmarks and hyperlinks, then head for the Meatgrinder and easily pass without rejection. If you use the (free) Open Office word processing software and my free templates along with this free e-book guide, it is possible to be finished with your 40-chapter e-book in a couple of hours, (even if you are a novice computer user).

I also offer free e-mail help as you do your own books. My e-mail address is available inside this e-book. Unless something is terribly wrong I answer all e-mail on the same day, usually within hours and sometimes in minutes. (Did I mention that I LOVE e-mail?)
Yes, I'll also do your e-books for you if you wish ($40). This e-book is designed to help you prove to yourself that you can do your own. It's actually fun, once you know my tricks!

Tip: Use practically any full-featured word processor, but Free Open Office is fastest and easiest for PC's and Macs too.

Why do I do all this for free?
It's all 100% free. No tricks, I promise. I'm 72-years old, retired (bored) and love e-mail interactions. I only want the chance to help you. If you want to repay me, buy my other novels and write me a great review! We'll be friends for life. (FYI: The pic of me above was taken in 1986.)

W.E. Powelson

W.E. (Bill) Powelson hails from the deep South Texas border town of McAllen. He is currently retired (err-uhh, unemployable) and living happily in Daytona Beach, Florida, on the twelve dollars and fifteen cents he saved as a working Honky-Tonk drummer.After a lifelong (50-year) career playing music (drums) for his supper, he is now in his golden years and has discovered that writing for the fun of it helps to keep a smile on his face. He is the author of five digital (html) e-books on the art of drumming; all of which may be viewed and studied online (or off), by going to “The Homestudy Institute of Drums” on the World Wide Web. (Just do a Google search for Bill Powelson.)If you are seeking help with Smashwords Meatgrinder Formatting, e-mail him. Bill will be happy to help in every way he can, plus (if you prefer) he will format your e-books according to Smashwords specs for a fee of $20 per each 100 pages.NOTE: If you are trying to use Word Starter to do your Meatgrinder formatting, feel free to e-mail Bill for free tips that may save you weeks of frustration.

    Using Open Office to Format e-books for the Smashwords Meatgrider:

    If you are an experienced computer user with a free copy of Open Office and if you already know a little about what you are doing, proceed immediately to Chapter 2. You may be finished formatting your e-book as you complete that chapter. If you get into a jam or need additional knowledge, see chapters 1, 3 and 4. If you still can't find the answers you need consult the Smashwords Styleguide or e-mail me:

    If you've never heard of Smashwords or the Meatgrinder before; and if you are wanting to self-publish a book of any kind, you'll need to take a voyage over to the Smashwords web site and make those discoveries first-hand for yourself. In my opinion, it's the BEST route to take within the Self-Publishing realm; (especially if money is an issue). You can do it all without spending a dime!

    If someone gave you this e-book and you need a specific template or additional instructions, visit the special web site I've setup for all this: Templates.

    In my own humble opinion: "Smashwords, is to self-publishing, what the Gutenberg-press was to the Holy Bible!" ~ W.E. Powelson

    In the fewest words possible I should say up-front that Open Office wasn't designed to do Smashwords Meatgrinder e-book formatting. Actually it might be more accurate to say that the Smashwords Meatgrinder wasn't designed for (free) Open Office! However, Open Office will do the job easier, faster and for free. This entire e-book was done with Open Office.

    We can easily force (free) Open Office to make the formatting job easier by using PRESET TEMPLATES. This e-book you are reading was done that way (as proof). The templates you'll need are currently available for free at a special Templates web-site I've setup specifically to save you from paying $109 for the full version of Microsoft Word. E-book formatting is a tad tedious using any word processor, including Open Office. However; the way I see it, formatting e-books is tedious no matter what software we use! Once we know the drill and the word processor we're using, it's just as easy with one as it is the other.

    My Secret: Shhhhh! Don't tell a soul but, I've made it ALL a lot easier by setting up the free templates you'll be needing. No matter what word processor you choose to use, my free templates will eliminate more than half of the frustrating drudgery and confusion involved in the formatting an e-book.

    Yes! I just said that! These (free) templates I'm talking about, may be used TO SIMPLIFY E-BOOK FORMATTING, no matter what word processor you may choose to use. Yes, EVEN MICROSOFT WORD!

    Tip #1:

    If your favorite word processor can do the following three things, it 'should' work for preparing a book (of nearly any size) for self-publishing at Smashwords.

    Your word processor MUST be capable of the following three things:

    (a.) an ability to do Bookmarks;

    (b.) an ability to do Hyperlinks;

    (c.) an ability to load, edit and save a Microsoft Word .doc file (97/2000 or later).

    Why use Open Office to prepare a book for Smashwords Meatgriinder for e-book publishing?

    NO COST! That's why you will want to read-on. The whole idea for this small e-book project is to help everyone save the $109.00 they would normally have to pay for the full version of Microsoft Word. Open Office is free and I've written
