Forced displacements, slavery, colonisation along with an education system that draws from other cultures that all discount black knowledge.The result has been that people of African descent across the world have become separated from essential knowledge about themselves, and specifically, information about caring for natural hair. Instead black people followed adverts that told them they needed to change their hair or wear wigs and follow trends set by advertisers of all manner of expensive products.

    Natural hairstyles are still frowned on as too bold and free. Today courts around the world - from Europe, to North America and across the African continent - are hearing cases asking that black people be allowed to wear their hair naturally - just how it grows out of their scalp. Crazy! And yet financial institutions, government offices, courts, health facilities, schools and educational institutions, corporations silently frown on natural Afro hair suggesting that it is somehow inappropriate and not suited to places where "important things" happen. And yet a natural Afro is just that - it is natural. It's an expression of who we are and where we come from.

    Now there's a silent movement growing to revive knowledge about natural hair and black hairstyles through experimentation and sharing of information.
