    There’s a lot I can’t remember. Of the fire and the bloodshed that hammered our civilization out of the bloated, complacent mass of Trade Union space, I know I’ve forgotten much. I can’t remember many of the ships I served on or the names of the people who flew them, most of them are now only faceless, voiceless shadows in my memory. I’ve forgotten the names of the planets that were burned by the Union’s leviathan ships and exactly how many millions of people were murdered in those first days of combat. I may have even forgotten some of the friends that I lost when the tide turned against those that resisted, maybe because they number more than the scars and old cracks that now crosshatch my face. I suppose the years have left me ...faded, blind and sentimental, but this report is the first of three that will tell the true story behind the reformation of the Human empire and the fall of the old Trade Union. I’ve done my best to piece together a proper account of the conflict, a memoir some would say, but there’s a lot I can’t remember.

    What I can recall is the small part that I played in the reshaping of our galactic community, the burns and the slashes that I took home with me and the murders that I witnessed. My account doesn’t detail even a fraction of the horrors that were let loose in Union space during the reformation, nor does it excuse my actions, but my hope is that it might clear the record of a man who was unjustly blamed for causing it. However reckless he was, he could only do what he thought was right. A man at the end of his rope has few other choices. I was fortunate in that I didn’t have to share the blame that was unfairly dealt him, even though I flew with him, fought and killed with him, and I was there when he gave his life trying to change the course of things.
