About this ebook
Andy took his I-D card out of his pocket and held it up for the man to see and he said. ‘I am Inspector Henderson and this man is Sergeant Joe Banks.’
‘Here you are sir I was not being funny but the constable did say only police.’
‘Oh no your right sir I wish some of my constable did as you did no thank you very much.’
Andy turned the key in the lock and went in.
They went into the front room first and went around the room looking inside of two big clocks and the sideboard but they found nothing there.
They moved into the kitchen this search took a bit longer but once again they could not find anything.
When they were satisfied that the ground floor held no secrets they decided to go upstairs.
They went upstairs and Andy said. ‘To save time Joe you take the room on the right and I’ll go left.’
Joe went into the first room and he could see that it was just a store room there was an old table and a set of old draws. He went through them and then he went to the room next door and when he walked in he saw at once this is where the man had been sleeping he started again but he was half way through this room when he heard Andy shout. ‘Joe come in here I think I might have something.’
When Joe walked into the room he saw Andy sitting on the bed with a great big black book in his hands.

CHAPTER 1
It was a dark October night and there were two dark shadows walking along the outside of a fence that ran around the building.
The two figures came to the large gateway which when they tried it found it to be locked.
Then they saw on large white board writing and it read.
THE LABORATORY FOR TESTING ANIMALS FOR HUMAN ADVANCEMENT IN MEDICINE’S
PROFESER P FENWICK.
There were two bushes to one side of the gate the two figures hid behind them and waited
‘They only had to wait for about ten minutes when they heard a man and a woman talking and as they came nearer to the gate they were getting louder.
One of the figures made a sign to the other that they were to stay still and wait.
Then they heard the man say. ‘Well this is as far as I go Miss Hinds Will lock the gate again then head back to my office.’
‘Oh come on Bob you have known me long enough to call me Mary.’
‘Oh ok Miss eh I mean Mary but if there is a boss around then I will have to call you Miss Hinds.’
‘Very well Bob now good night.’
They heard the gate closing behind the woman, and they watched as she walked along the road.
Then the first figure made the sign for his mate to follow him.
The young woman could not hear them following behind her because they had rubber soled shoes on they followed her until they thought that they were far enough away from the man who had taken her to the gate then the first figure said. ‘Right lets go and get her.’
The young girl heard this and turned around in terror and shouted. ‘What is it what do you want.’
The first figure put his finger to his mouth making the sign for her to be quiet, then he pounced on her and the other figure too and the first figure said. ‘Quick man I don’t want her to suffer like her animals stick the knife into her and let’s get out of here.’
The young girl screamed as loud as she could but no one came to help her and she fell to the ground as the second figure cut across her throat with a knife.’
Detective Andy Henderson was walking into the Pilgrim Street Police station.
He was walking past the front desk when the Sergeant on duty said. ‘Good morning sir by the way the boss wants to see you in his office as soon as you have had your coffee with Joe.’
Andy smiled at the Sergeants last remark, but he knew everyone in the station knew about him and Joe having a coffee before they started work.
He said. ‘Ok Tom don’t spread it around the station, I am going up in a few minutes.’
When Andy walked into his office Joe was already there drinking his coffee.
Andy picked up his coffee and said. ‘I’ll have to be quick with this Joe I have got to up to see the boss.’
‘Have you any idea what it’s about Andy.’
‘No not a clue, but I’ll bet you it’s only about two things, number one I am going to get a bolicking or number two we have a bad job to go to.’
‘Well Andy I got a clue this morning when I came in, you know that new clerk the lovely dark headed one, well she told me while I was getting the coffees that a murder came in this morning and she thought that it was out in the sticks somewhere.’
‘Oh no Joe I would rather have a bolicking the out of town jobs always take twice as long to solve.’
He drank off the rest of his coffee then said. ‘Right Joe I had better go upstairs and get it over with.’
When he got to the top floor he saw the writing on the door that he had seen hundreds of times and he was thinking that every time if it was not a bolicking then it was a bad job he read out in his mind ‘Inspector John Adams. He knocked and then entered the chief Inspector's office.
The Inspector stood up and said with a smile on his face. ‘Good morning Andy do you want a cup of coffee or have you just had one.’
‘No thank you sir I’ll get one when I go back down from Sergeant Banks.’
‘Yes a good man is Joe Banks I had him with me in one case while you were away on your honeymoon I think it was.’
‘Aye Joe’s a good one alright.’
‘Right what has happened Andy there came in this morning a job out in Northumberland its one of these small village things Andy but it could blow up into something big that's why I want you and Joe to take it on and try to get it solved as soon as we can, now let me read it out to you, late last night a worker from one of these Government Testing Centres was murdered, but Andy it was a very messy murder according to the local bobby, and there was a note strapped to her body and this is what it reads,
STOP
THE
KILLING
OF INNOCENT ANIMALS OR
MORE OF YOU WILL DIE.
THE CIRCLE OF BLACK.
Now I want you and Joe to go there and stay there until the job is done.’
‘You don’t mean we should stay overnight do you sir.’
‘Yes Andy I do and not just the one night I want you to stay Monday to Thursday
