He had to get rid of it somehow. For weeks it had glared at him from its prominent position in the shop—the cause of all his troubles. And not just because of its appearance. It was particularly grotesque; hooked nose, pointed ears, curled lip. Common enough features for this kind of decorative stonework, but add to it an expression of sheer evil and malevolence; a piercing stare from vacant eye sockets that seemed to follow the viewer wherever he moved, and it can be understood why Peter Harris had developed a deep and passionate hatred for the gargoyle.

It was not the kind of thing he normally stocked. At sixty-two and less than a year after a heart operation, he had been forced to specialize in easily handled items of crockery, ornaments, paintings, and general objet d’art.

Why had he accepted it? He had asked himself that question a dozen times, and still he could not understand the moment of weakness that had allowed it to be forced upon him. It was not as though he had liked the monstrosity. Or that he had seen it as particularly salable Even at first sight it had given him a feeling of uneasiness and a sense of foreboding.

The Stranger had appeared, brisk and efficient, a pleasant and disarming smile putting Peter instantly at ease. ‘Good morning, Mister Harris, a nice pleasant morning. Is it not?’

How does he know my name, Peter had wondered. It wasn’t displayed on the shop front. Someone from the village...? Or maybe he’d got it from the phone book. He dismissed the thought from his mind.

‘Good morning, sir. Yes, it’s a nice start to the day. What can I do for you?’

‘I’m a freelance dealer in antiques. Got some nice items in the van that might interest you; real nice condition, no rubbish!’

‘I’ve a pretty full stock,’ Peter raised a casual hand towards his overcrowded shelves. ‘And business hasn’t been too good lately,’ he lied, always on the look-out for a bargain, but fully aware of the value of not showing it.

The salesman gave him such an eager look that Peter felt obliged to show some interest.

‘Well, it can’t do any harm to have a look I suppose.’

‘Good! I’m sure you can always find space for a nice item or two. Can’t afford to miss a good thing in these trying times, you know.’
