About this ebook

Five odd stories for children combined into one collection. Follow the tales of anti-heroes through misadventures and mishaps. Nanoworms, zombies, a panda, a phairyphant, and Steampunk animals share their adventures across the pages.

“Phairyphant”

Mystical phairyphants have existed since the days of wooly mammoths and mastodons. Phairydust allows them to fly on gossamer wings while they sniff the air for opportunities to make the world a better place for elephants. This is the story of Elly, one such phairyphant.

“Naughty Nanoworms”

Life on the streets is generally peaceful for Albert, but one day Albert walks his way into trouble. Will he keep his shopping cart? Will Meezer the cat come up with a plan to destroy the world? Can a shopping cart and a skateboard ever get along?

“Zachary Zombie and the Wicked Worm”

Zachary Zombie has been sent to find the magical Dagger of Gik, accompanied by three fellow zombies. What dangers await the rotting zombies? Who will lose the most body parts? And who, what, or where in the world is Gik?

“Steampunk Roo”

Steampunk animals roam the wild Outback of Australia, but horrible news has come that someone is destroying water stops that keep the Steampunk animals running. It’s up to Steampunk Roo to bring an end to the terrible destruction!

“Pow the Panda, The Case of the Rainbow Dragon”

In the fantastically roaring year of 1925, business is good for a hard-working private eye in Chinatown. When trouble shows up, a girl named Opal, a gorilla, a bear, a bed and bunch of bad puns join it. Pow is left with the Case of the Rainbow Dragon.

John H. Carroll

John H. Carroll was the youngest of seven children and was born in Atlanta, Georgia in 1970 where he was kept in a dresser drawer with the clean socks. Luckily, he wasn’t kept with the dirty socks or else he might have grown up to become slightly warped. As a child, John spent most of his time wandering through the Mojave Desert in an attempt to avoid people. He would stare at the sky, imagining what it would be like to explore different worlds. One of his favorite memories is watching his dad build the fuselage of Evel Kneivel’s skycycle in their garage. One of his least favorite moments was watching that skycycle fall into the Snake River. (Not his dad’s fault and he has documentation to prove it, so nyah)As a teenager, John spent most of his time driving wherever he could in an attempt to avoid people. He would stare at the road, imagining what it would be like to explore different worlds. He was the captain of the chess team, lettered in golf and band while in high school, and wasn’t beaten up anywhere near as much as one might imagine. As an adult, John spends most of his time staring at a computer screen in an attempt to avoid people. He stares at the monitor for hours, imagining what it would be like to explore different worlds. Occasionally, he looks around to see what’s happening on planet Earth. Quite frankly, it frightens him. He’s just going to do his best to write as many books as he can before aliens disintegrate humanity for being so irritating.Emo bunny minions surround John at most times. He is their imaginary friend and they look to him for guidance. At one point, they took over the world. No one noticed because they left everything exactly as it was. They gave the world back after a week because it was depressing. The Ryallon Series is his most popular endeavor into the field of writing. His Stories for Demented Children have lightened the hearts of many strange children and adults. He writes in the evenings and weekends whenever possible.

Elly zipped through a grouping of trees that provided shade for creatures of the savanna. She loved spreading her wide gossamer wings to fly up and down through the air currents as she dodged branches.

A dragonfly darted away as she flew past. Even though it was large for a dragonfly, it was only half the size of Elly. After playing in the trees for a moment, Elly lazily drifted through the air. She used her large ears as rudders to spiral around the trunk of a tree before landing on a shallow rock in a mountain-fed stream.

Her colorful phairy wings folded back as she dipped her trunk into the stream. She splashed water over herself to wash old phairydust off her brown skin. Through the ripples, she saw the long lashes over her beautiful pink eyes as they joyfully blinked.

It was wonderful to cool off after flying across the hot African savanna. Elly decided she would spend the afternoon resting on the rock. The sound of the water burbling through the underbrush was relaxing and the scent of warm grass on the banks filled her trunk.

A frightened young voice called from behind bushes on the other side of the stream. Hello?

Elly looked up to see a trembling elephant calf peeking out. It was cute, with a low forehead and ears spread wide. The tip of its trunk lifted to sniff the air for danger and it had a foot up, ready to back away at the first sign of trouble.

Are you an insect? it asked. I’ve never seen an elephant shaped like an insect before.

Elly lifted her trunk and snorted. Harrumph! I am not an insect. I am a phairyphant and my name is Elly. It’s our job to look after the forest and savanna so that elephants always have a place to live.

Oh. The young elephant took a cautious step forward and extended its trunk to sniff Elly. You’re the prettiest phairyphant I’ve ever seen.

Elly blushed and curled her trunk bashfully. Thank you. She suddenly stood straight and pointed her trunk at the calf. Wait! You’ve seen other phairyphants? Elly paced back and forth on the rock, swishing her tail with each turn. We’re supposed to be invisible. You shouldn’t be able to see us at all!

Oh! I didn’t know. The young elephant covered its eyes with its trunk. I can’t see you now.

Elly’s mouth twisted and she raised an eyebrow. That’s not what I mean. What’s your name, anyway?

I’m Pachy! He stepped forward and knelt at the bank of the stream. His trunk dipped into the water. "I’ve never seen a phairyphant before, but if I had, you’d be the prettiest. What is a phairyphant anyway?"

Elly blushed again at the compliment. "Well I’m a phairyphant, of course. We’ve existed as long as elephants have, back to the time of wooly mammoths and before. There used to be more elephants and phairyphants. Elly became sad. Every day, there are less and less of us."

Pachy tilted his head. What’s a wooly mammoth?

Elly shook off the sadness as she scooped more water and sprayed it over an itchy part of her neck. It’s a big hairy elephant that used to travel in the icy north of the world. I haven’t seen one in centuries.

Pachy’s head tilted the other way. What’s an icy north? What’s a centuries?

Elly sighed. Where are your mother and your herd?

I was separated from them by lions. They chased me, but one tripped over its mane and the others ran into him. Pachy looked around nervously. I’ve been hiding here ever since.

That’s why you can see me. Elly gave a decisive nod. You need help getting back to your herd. She shook the water off her wings, lifted her trunk over her head and puffed a bit of fresh phairydust
