DARIAN HAS CROSSED PATHS WITH THE SHADOWS
AND THE ONLY WAY OUT IS TO FIGHT IT

Never in a million years would Darian Lane imagine that the night of the robbery would bring such evil and misfortune into his life. He thought that he could finally start anew with Jennifer, but the shadow of death is determined to ruin every good in his life.

Darian has to convince Detective Daniels that the murder that happened is not something that can be solved by throwing a person into jail. He was never one to believe in the paranormal either until Miss Bonnie mysteriously knew about his dreams.

Miss Bonnie gave him fair warning about the darkness that he has to endure. He is the only one capable of stopping them, and it is up to him to fight the shadows from claiming the darkness. If not, then all will be lost and the light will fade from reality.

Will Darian just give up and accept his dark destiny? Or will he choose to fight it for the sake of his loved ones?

EXCERPT
“Many millennia ago, before light shown on this reality, there was a consciousness of such extreme vileness and hatred that everything it created caused pain and suffering. This vile consciousness has gone by many names throughout the ages but none of them ever truly described what it was. Your darkest nightmares would be as fluffy kittens to this consciousness, and all it could do was create horrible creatures so that it could destroy them over and over again. It sat in complete darkness and tortured itself by visualizing the worst possible experiences.”

Darian was drawn in completely to what Miss Bonnie was saying, but Daniels was paying more attention to what she wasn’t saying, and what she wasn’t saying was what he needed to know to stop these murders from continuing.

“While in this realm of darkness, the vile consciousness saw something completely alien to it. There was, for a very brief second, a spark of light. This spark confused the consciousness that had dwelt in darkness for its entire existence. It had no idea what light was, nor did it understand why it was appearing in a realm that was nothing but pain and anguish. As soon as the spark was noticed it was gone again that the consciousness sought to discover what it was. It put all of its attention on trying to figure out what this strange happening was, and how it could be made again.”

Miss Bonnie got up and walked over to a large cabinet that sat against the far wall. She opened the cabinet and took out a small black box made from what appeared to be charred wood. She brought the box back to her chair and sat it in the table in front of them....

Author

G. J. Winters

G.J. Winters “fell into” writing when a well-meaning teacher of his submitted his Creative Writing assignment for publication in the school paper. The local paper picked up the article and asked G.J. for publishing rights, to which the young G.J. agreed with some hesitation, as he felt “that wasn’t one of my best writings at the time.” The reality was that this article was written when G.J. was a junior in high school. The article, which was a fictionalized version of a local myth surrounding a famous abandoned house near a swamp, was an assignment turned in as part of a mid-term exam. The teacher, Miss Mendez, thought G.J.’s writing was “exemplary” and showed “natural, raw writing talent for a person his age." The assignment called for “providing details to a local urban myth – provide background, using a local resident’s POV, and close with a vague hint of authenticity and realism."The story, entitled “The Old Mansion by the Swamp,” appeared in the high school paper as a short story, but was later serialized in the local paper in 6 parts. G.J. added more characters and even a sub-story (which later became a story of its own, “I Was Shirley Massey” – a story which centered on a member of the fictional family who resided in the Massey Mansion in the late 70s and disappeared without a trace). With the success of both of his original series, G.J. thought to venture into writing longer stories, this time with futuristic themes, as he has always been fascinated with travelling through time, future crimes, apocalyptic themes, and stories set in civilizations from the future.G.J. identifies with sci-fi writers such as Isaac Asimov (“Kept me awake through most evenings in college.”) and Margaret Peterson Haddix (“My girlfriend at the time had fits of jealousy over my fanatical tendencies towards this author.”).G.J. holds a degree in Chemistry, is an intern at the R&D division of a pharmaceutical manufacturing company, and lives with girlfriend Deidre, a magazine editor.

    Chapter One

DARIAN LOOKED BACK in his rearview mirror and saw the detective following behind him. He wasn't sure how all of this was going to work out but he was hoping to be done with it all rather quickly. He knew Jennifer wasn't thrilled about being left with Miss Bonnie, but he vowed to make it all up to her if they actually survived through the rest of the night.

He had a very good feeling that everything was going to work out but there was a nagging in his soul that told him something bad was coming and there was little he could do about it.

He tried his best to push the thoughts of carnage out of his mind and focused on what he was actually fighting for: Jennifer. He simply couldn't let her down since they have been so happy together. He made a vow to himself at that moment that whatever happened from here on out, he would make sure that Jennifer made it out to live her life, even if it meant living it without him.

Detective Daniels watched as Darian drove on for Miss Bonnie's house. He had heard rumors about the old lady but never had the chance to meet her in person. Some of the things he had heard about her made even him cringe a bit. Being a logical man and relying on facts to solve cases made him naturally skeptical about anything having to do with the supernatural or paranormal, and that was exactly what those rumors said Miss Bonnie was.

He didn't like the idea of seeking help from some batshit crazy hermit of a lady living in the woods, but if that was what Darian thought would help, then so be it.

He just hoped that she would have some half decent coffee and not try to make him eat eye of newt cupcakes.

JENNIFER SAT ON the sofa trying her best not to move. The place was so cluttered that she just knew she would end up knocking something over and breaking it. All she knew was that Darian wanted her to stay there because she was supposed to be safe. She definitely didn't feel all that safe, though, and she really wished that Darian would get there a little bit quicker.

Would you like some tea, sweetie? Miss Bonnie smiled at Jennifer. It was the same sort of smile that her grandmother used to give her when she was a child. It always made her feel content and happy when her grandmother smiled in that manner and that was exactly how she felt at that moment as well.

Um, sure I could use something to drink. Thank you. Miss Bonnie didn't seem to be that bad after all. In fact, Jennifer was starting to think that she was completely mistaken by everyone that had ever seen her. She was a misunderstood character that simply wanted to live her life the way she wanted. All the rumors were from people that simply didn't understand what they were seeing.

Miss Bonnie handed her the cup of tea and smiled at her again. Such a pretty young thing you are, sweetie. Darian is a very lucky man to have a woman like you by his side. In fact, I am sure that he could accomplish anything the Universe put before him as long as he had you to comfort him in the process.

Jennifer took the cup of tea and felt the warmth spread through her hands. It had a strange aroma to it that made her think of lazy summer days as a child lying in the grass in the afternoon sun. Smelling the wild flowers and scent of the grass all around her as she stared up at the clouds, using her imagination to create pictures that moved and flowed through the sky. She could hear the birds chirping in the trees and smell the flowers just as if she was there.

She sipped the tea slowly and let the flowery flavor spread over her tongue. The warmth from the tea spread over her body and she could feel her muscles relaxing almost instantly. The tea tasted sweet and sensual and she took another sip. As she swallowed her second sip of tea, she closed her eyes and pictured her grandmother standing on the porch of her old house waving at her and calling for her to come in for lunch. Then there was a peaceful darkness that fell upon her.

Jennifer wanted to stay awake knowing that Darian would be there soon but she was so tired. She blinked her eyes rapidly in the hopes that she could wake herself but it did no good. Just as she let that wonderful darkness slip over her she heard Miss Bonnie speak: Sleep well, child. This will be over shortly and you will never feel pain again.
