About this ebook

The second book in the steamy, romantic Body Finder thriller series by Kimberly Derting.

Violet and Jay are finally dating, but adjusting to the new relationship is not as easy as Violet anticipated. Especially when she has to split Jay’s time and attention with his new best friend, Mike, and Mike’s pesky younger sister—who happens to be obsessed with Jay.

Meanwhile, when Violet’s special abilities lead her to the body of a young boy, her tip to the police puts her on the radar of the FBI. Violet tries to fend off the FBI’s questions while maintaining the semblance of a normal life, but somebody’s leaving her threatening notes and an echo around Mike’s house reinforces that all is not right. Violet is forced to admit that perhaps the only people who can help her figure it out are the very people she’s desperate to avoid—the FBI.

Desires of the Dead is the compulsive second book in the four-book Body Finder series by Kimberly Derting.

I’m having a really hard time deciding what to say about Desires of the Dead. Honestly, I’m having a hard time even figuring out my feelings for it, let alone putting my thoughts into words. I read it fairly quickly, but I never really felt like it grabbed me. There were aspects that I liked and some that I didn’t so much.

I will say that one thing I really liked about Desires of the Dead, especially over the first book, was the Prologue. It was written very similarly to the Prologues in the Twilight books, in that it gave a preview of the climax of the book, but with no context and not a lot of information. Honestly, this is probably what kept me flipping through the pages more than anything else. There were some pretty interesting things going on in that Prologue!

However, from there, I felt like Desires of the Dead took a little bit of a downturn. Violet was really frustrating in this book. Because of her new romantic relationship with Jay and his resulting desire to keep her safe above all else, she starts feeling like she can’t talk to him like she used to, and she starts keeping things from him. Even when she starts receiving threats, she still doesn’t tell him. Um, what? It was just so far away from their characters in the first book that it kind of rubbed me the wrong way.

Another thing that bothered me was that the mystery perspective chapters were a little too obvious to me. I guessed from the very first one who the character speaking was, though it took me a bit to fully figure out the context of what was going on. I did eventually figure out a lot of it, which is always frustrating for me, but it wasn’t horrible.

Now that I’ve ranted, I will let you know that there were some things I liked about Desires of the Dead. For one thing, Violet’s friend Chelsea, who is usually outspoken and almost annoying sometimes, develops a crush, which she doesn’t seem prepared for. Seeing her navigate that crush was really funny. I also liked the new characters: Sara and Rafe. They brought a bit of mystery and intrigue.

Though I predicted a bit of it, I really liked the way the final conflict played out. I thought the ending was pretty good, but it didn’t leave me dying to read the next book, though I still will. I definitely don’t think that this series is bad and would recommend avoiding it, but it wouldn’t be at the top of my recommendation list either.

Desires of the Dead (The Body Finder #2) by Kimberly Derting is another awesome book about Violet who can 'feel' echos of people that have been murdered and track them down. This gets her into a bit of trouble this book because now she is noticed by more than her family and Jay. Someone is also threatening her with notes, calls, and a dead cat. These books are always filled with intrigue, mystery, excitement, and real life dialogue and feelings between Violet and Jay. Violet is compelled to follow the echo and help the dead and that leads her into trouble. Wonderful plot, twists, and surprises, and great suspense. Love these books.

This series has been one of my favorite. It is also one of the most stolen series in my classroom. I don’t know if they are keeping them, passing them on and they never return or what. I have bought this entire series twice just this year. Desires of the Dead is the second book in the Body Finder series. Violet has always been able to locate dead bodies. That doesn’t mean she can go into a graveyard blind folded and point them out. I’m talking about those bodies that have been disposed of. Her family has been very supportive as has her boyfriend Jay. This “gift” has been passed down in her family. Unfortunately, in this book she has two people after her, the FBI and a creepy stalker. We see her relationship with Jay build, we meet new characters, Rafe and others. We see the toll this “gift” take on her and her relationships. This is a series I would definitely recommend to more mature readers. On my shelves this one required parental permission because of some of the content and the fact I was teaching 6th graders. I definitely recommend this book.

One little well meaning act, in a moment of indecision, can change your life as Violet is discovering. She knew it was mistake. She know she shouldn't have placed the call let alone been there in the first place, but she was sure there was no way she would be connected to the crime, could be connected to body she found. She was wrong, though she didn't know this until it was too late, until the FBI was calling her to explain how she knew.Someone was watching her, sending her messages, trying to frighten her and they were succeeding. But as long as Violet had Jay by her side she felt reassured that things would be alright. That is until even the one person she thought she could count on, the one person she trusted to trust her in return, no longer believed her. As her relationship with Jay changes Violet finds she has some tough decisions to make, not the least of which involve the FBI.Desires Of The Dead begins with danger and ends in intriguing. A paranormal mystery that is full of secrets, echoes and double dates. Like most people her age Violet is finding her way in life, but she is also dealing with her strange gift and is beginning to accept it as a part of who she is. As a heroine Violet is fragile, tough, impulsive, determined and in love. This is a sequel every bit as sweet and captivating as the first.

The further adventures of Violet in finding dead bodies. For the first 1/3rd to half of this book I was pretty frustrated with the story. Mainly having to do with a major plot point (one I suspect will be major for the rest of the series) and the way it was dealt with. I would think any sort of adult representing an agency remotely related to law enforcement would know better than to approach a teenager without going through said teenager's parents. Otherwise, the story picked up about halfway through although it does rather stretch the believability factor (paranormal talents aside). Overall I feel this was a better written book than the first and hope that this is a positive progression for the series as I plan to read the next book in the series as well.

synopsis, review and (obviously) book have mega spoilers for the first book, The Body Finder, so just read that one if you haven't yet!!

Violet and her town are finally safe from the serial killer abducting and killing teenage girls--who even tried to kill Violet. But she's not safe from her 'gift,' her ability to sense and locate dead beings and match their killers to them.

On a day with one of her friends, a day just trying to be a normal teenage girl--as Jay is still the only one of her friends who knows what she can do--she comes across another echo, another body calling to her.

It's her discovery of this body that brings Violet under the notice of the FBI and threatens to make what she does not so secret anymore.

Violet has no idea who to go to with this new development--she would have gone to Jay, but now that they're dating things seem different and anyway, he's always spending time with his new best friend Mike.

With everything seemingly coming apart around her, Violet starts looking into Mike's more than tragic family past--and wondering how and when everything went so wrong. And how to fix it.

Desires of the Dead is interesting because it both expands the story from what The Body Finder focused on (moving out from just Jay, the girls and Violet, her family and the murders to more characters and more locales) but also becoming more focused. Desires of the Dead, logically looks more at Violet and her ability and what that would logically mean for someone in more of the long run. What it would mean if you found bodies, if someone found out, how someone would try to leverage that or you.

Because neither of those things loses anything or is weak so that the other can be strong, I think that Desires of the Dead might even be a stronger book than The Body Finder. The characters are still great. The new characters add a lot to the story; and there's depth to them that adds to the plot as well.

Violet and Jay aren't left in flux nor are they just coasting along so that everything else can be developed. Things aren't given conflict for conflicts sake, either.

The fact that Violet and her 'ability' were taken to another level really made this story realistic even when in one sense it's not.

10/10 for this . . . and when oh when can I find out about more either from Kimberly Derting and/or in this series!!!

won this from PitchDark books on Twitter!

(also I know there's something in my summary that's off from the first book but I didn't want people just glancing at it to see it and spoil themselves for the first book . . . even if I did have a warning!)

The plot of this book was a little swallowed up by the romance but less so than the previous book. I had a hard time caring about her issues when yet again this generic perfect boyfriend is the most important issue when people are dead. It was an easy read though and even though it wasn't deep or anything it was interesting.

I've been told the definition of madness is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result. So why did I pick the sequel to "The Body Finder" up from the library?

All of the things which annoyed me from the first book are still present: Violet still can't do anything without Jay (the topper for me was when she missed two days of school because they had a fight) and Jay is still completely understanding and awesome no matter what (even when his girlfriend is jealous he has a friend... who is male.)

    Blech.

Seriously, the eye roll and gag suppression factor were in full effect for the entire book. I won't be touching the next one with a ten foot pole.

Sadly, I did not enjoy this book as much as the first. The mystery and suspense really weren’t there and the romance aspect got kind of annoying. The constant air of suspense that was the first book wasn’t as good this time around. Last time we had chapters from the killer’s POV, this time we had chapters from a fellow student who is harassing Violet because they’re jealous of her relationship with Jay. It was obvious to me who this person was from the very beginning so the mystery was taken away. One of the things I loved about Violet in the first book was that she didn’t keep secrets from Jay or her family. This time around all she did was keep secrets, and her reasons for keeping them were dumb. Like, I put everyone in danger by having this ability and if I don’t tell them what’s going on I’m saving them from trouble blah, blah, blah. I’m sick of the MC always hiding things “in the best interest” of others. Plus, she told her family and Jay everything in the first book so it seemed out of character, done just to create tension between her and Jay’s new romantic relationship. A few new characters were introduced that I think will play a larger role in the next few books. Does anyone else smell a love triangle coming on?? *Cough* Rafe *cough* Violet & Jay finally admitted their more-than-friend feelings for each other and now it’s about to get ruined. UGH! Overall, while I was dissapointed in the lack of mystery/suspense and the addition of a new possible love interest I still enjoyed the story overall.

    Synopsis
Violet Ambrose has always kept her ability to sense the echoes of the dead a secret but after finding the body of a dead boy, she has drawn the attention of the FBI. Unfortunately, she also finds herself the target of a disturbed stalker and has no one to turn to, not even her closest friend turned boyfriend, Jay Heaton who is preoccupied with he newest pal, Mike, whose family seems to have secrets of its own.

    Review
The paranormal thriller premise has potential but is completely overshadowed by the teen melodrama and angst.

Violet has become a completely different character - she has regressed emotionally and is now a typical whiny and jealous girlfriend who keeps secrets and overreacts to the smallest thing. The fact that she fails to tell her parents of the FBI's interest, is completely illogical and ruined my suspension of disbelief.

The story begins well with the discovery of a boy's body and Violet's stalker but ends up going in a confusing and disappointing direction. The tension and suspense that builds in the beginning rapidly fizzles out by the end.

Violet and Jay's romance is sweet and they certainly have oodles of chemistry but his perfection gets old after a while and the inclusion of Rafe feels out of place. It is as if Derting needed a tick next to "love triange" on her YA check list.

I may eventually read the next book if it comes my way but I won't be actively looking for it.

Ok I can't stand not saying something about this book. This book is a good example of why I am tentative when it comes to reading YA books. During half of this book the main character flips and flops and flounders about weather or not she should spill her big secret. She ends up blaming other people and gets a million chances to tell people but the moment it is time she freezes. This is what I hate about YA characters, they are so indecisive and don't know what they want. Just tell the truth! Argh!! So frustrating! That is why only 3 stars!

Violet is back. She's still chasing down the ghostly echoes that haunt her. She and Jay are still together but he's more protective of her now. This is something she can't bring herself to appreciate.Violet begins to realize that someone is stalking her. Leaving gruesome gifts and notes for her to discover. Can she unravel the mystery of who before things take a deadly turn?I became engrossed in this book. It kept taking me around all the twists in the plot path, leading me to its surprising conclusion. The characters are easy to relate to and this second book feels like catching up with old friends with some new additions. This one gets 5 breathless kisses!

This is book two in this YA mystery series.Violet Ambrose is a 16-year-old who senses “echoes” from the dead, but only those whose lives have been cut short by the violent actions of others. The echo can be a smell, sound, color, or taste. The perpetrators of the violence carry a similar echo. Identifying one, the other, or both generally gets Violet into trouble. The dead call out to Violet through their echoes, because they want to be at peace. She can’t resist the pull to go to them, but insists on doing so alone without telling either her infinitely patient, understanding, and loving boyfriend or parents, so as not to worry them. Of course, as soon as the murderer comes after Violet, the boyfriend and parents get involved anyway, and more worried than they would have been otherwise, since her life is now in danger. This does not occur to Violet, and is a source of frustration to the reader, who wants to shake her each time this happens. Two new characters enter the series in this book: Sara and Rafe. Sara is a woman who works with the FBI preparing profiles of killers, and Rafe works with Sara in a capacity yet unknown to us. But Rafe is around Violet’s age, is mysterious and sexy, and elicits some sort of electric response from Sara. I suspect we will see more of Sara and Rafe in future installments of the series, and that Rafe may be a pull on Sara’s affections. Evaluation: The “Body Finder” series is quite entertaining; it has typical YA elements (e.g., high school cafeteria-centered action, boyfriend with crooked smile and floppy hair, and best friend who is silly but diverting), but also appealing mystery/suspense aspects as well.

Synopsis:The missing dead call to Violet. They want to be found.Violet can sense the echoes of those who've been murdered—and the matching imprint that clings to their killers. Only those closest to her know what she is capable of, but when she discovers the body of a young boy she also draws the attention of the FBI, threatening her entire way of life.As Violet works to keep her morbid ability a secret, she unwittingly becomes the object of a dangerous obsession. Normally she'd turn to her best friend, Jay, except now that they are officially a couple, the rules of their relationship seem to have changed. And with Jay spending more and more time with his new friend Mike, Violet is left with too much time on her hands as she wonders where things went wrong. But when she fills the void by digging into Mike's tragic family history, she stumbles upon a dark truth that could put everyone in danger.Review:I didn't enjoy this as much as 'The Body Finder', I still enjoyed the relationship between Vi and Jay, and all the school antics but I just didn't enjoy the story.Firstly Mike and Megan are both really good sub characters although the author tries to take us down the wrong alley more than once, it was easy to see through. Also the initial 'find' in Seattle sounds like it could have been a better story than dead cats by cars and anonymous phone calls and letters. This one isn't as dark as the first book but there is still a whole lot of teenage angst going on that any YA reader will enjoy. The premise is still captivating and Derting has a great writing style and I'm really excited to know that there's a third book on its way.

Desires of the Dead was so intense! I felt like a lot of The Body Finder focused mostly on the heating-up relationship between Jay and Violet, which was awesome, but also sort of disappointing because it wasn’t as creepy as I had expected. But Desires of the Dead? Was super creepy.I’m always a fan of stalker-ish storylines. I love reading about the random hang ups, dead animals, creepy notes, etc. I love reading from the stalker’s point of view. That stuff seriously creeps me out, so I really enjoyed that aspect of Desires of the Dead. The secondary characters were a bit meh to me in this one. Well, really only Chelsea. My goodness, she drove me nuts. I felt like Violet’s parents were way too absent in this one as compared to The Body Finder, especially after what happened in that one. But I did love the introduction of the new characters, especially Rafe! I hope we see more of him in the upcoming books in the series, as well as Sara.I also liked how the storyline focused not only on what was happening to Violet in the moment, but it also gave hints towards what Violet’s future would be like, and the question of whether or not her abilities should be kept secret. My only issue with Desires of the Dead was the ending. I just felt like everything got wrapped up too quickly. And I definitely saw it coming. But despite that, loved it!Overall, I really enjoyed Desires of the Dead. It was creepy, intense, and awesome. I’m excited that the series got picked up for another two books!

Thrilling, mysterious, and filling. Kimberly Derting leaves me on the edge of my seat with her remarkable writing, her suspense-filled plot, and a romance that anyone would kill to have, in the second book in Violet's journey, Desires of the Dead. I was totally hyped when I finished The Body Finder, and over the top when I finished Desires of the Dead. Things have calmed down for a while for Violet and Jay, until Violet finds a body of a young boy and until Mike and his sister, Megan settle into town. These events spark curiosity and the emotion of anger, while even more emotions and reactions come as the story develops. What also helped in the success of this book were the characters who really had personality and heart, it was like they were real. Almost too real.Okay the romance. Can I be totally cliché and say that Jay and Violet's romance gave me butterflies and had be blushing like a total idiot. I mean their romance sort of gives hope to all those who are newly single, still single, or in a relationship. Jay and Violet's relationship is the kind that everyone hopes to have, they were inseparable, put aside the fact that Jay had this obsession with Mike for a while. They were and still are the best of friends and no one pressured one another to do other things they didn't want to do. What I liked the most is that when their relationship was put to the test, they came through and were stronger than ever. Heck, I was miserable the whole time Jay and Violet weren't together, but it definitely shows something about their relationship and their character. And oh boy, when they took their love to the next level I nearly had a heart attack.Do I have to repeat everything I said? Because I loved this book. Kimberly Derting's writing is enjoyable, remarkable, great, awesome, freaking amazing...need I say more? Bottom line, I'm ecstatic and anxious for the next book, and you've got to read this if you haven't. Got it? Good.

** spoiler alert ** I LOVED The Body Finder, and meeting the bar of that first novel is pretty tough... and sadly, Desires of the Dead didn’t quite reach my ‘awesomeness-level expectations’. Was it a great read? Yes. Was it an epic read? No. In the story, Violet’s life is settling back into ‘normal’ a few months after the traumatic experiences of the last book. When someone new moves into town, and Violet discovers another tragic death her life is thrown off kilter. Filled with danger, mystery and betrayals this book will often have you on the edge of your seat. The pace is not as quick as the first novel, but it still manages to keep you wanting more. I think what bothered me about this book was one of my favorite characters, Violet, changing in negative ways. She turns up the angst to high and then decides to start hiding things from Jay ... and she wonders why everything is going wrong. Hmm, I wonder? Luckily Jay was still his amazing self and the haunting mystery was still enthralling, making this a great read. I was happy with the book overall, but it did leave me with a lot of questions (aka – Rafe?!) and I REALLY want to the next book to come out soon. A year seems like a long time! If you enjoyed The Body Finder make sure to pick up a copy of Desires of The Dead when it releases next week!

This is the second installment in the Body Finder series. I really enjoyed reading the first one and enjoyed this one just as much. Violet's abilities are improving in this book. She follows a calling she has to an echo that leads her to the body of a little boy trapped inside a shipping container on the harbour. When she anonymously calls the police to say she heard noises, she raises suspicions with the FBI. At the same time, a new boy and girl at school are creating quite a stir. Strange things begin to happen to Violet, dangerous things. Violet indulges her callings further and puts herself into danger time and time again, much to the dismay of her parents and boyfriend. A lady from the FBI seems to know her secret, but Violet has kept her secret for so long, she can't possibly start sharing it with anyone now. Can she? If you like romance and mystery, but refuse to give up good writing for it, this is the book for you!

Desires of the Dead is a great book two for The Body Finder series! I’m glad I finally picked this series up to read, it was well worth it! I was curious where this book was going to go since The Body Finder wrapped itself up perfectly. Of course I wanted to see more of Violet and Jay’s relationship unfold. The chemistry they have between one another is the reason why I wanted to read Desires of the Dead. I do understand that this series is paranormal, but I would read a story about them even if it was contemporary. I love that Violet can find bodies through echoes she can hear/feel. The way Kimberly Derting describes the imprint that death leaves on the bodies and the people who committed the murder is brilliant. The Body Finder and Desires of the Dead have just enough of a creep factor for me and didn’t keep me up at night. I just want to say thank you to Kimberly Derting for writing a series that doesn’t have cliffhangers! What’s even more surprising, that even without those cliffhangers, I still want to read the upcoming books!

I really liked The Body Finder, so I couldn't wait to pick this book up. (thanks Star Book Tours!)I wasn't so much a fan of the mystery/fantasy side of The Body Finder, but of the romance between Violet and Jay. I thought they were great characters, I loved reading about them! So nice to avoid the whole romantic triangle BS for once. This book was a continuation of their relationship, I still love them together. No complaints at all about any of that. And, in this book, I thought the mystery side of things was much better. I wasn't expecting that at all, and it was a nice surprise. I got really caught up in that part of the story, and was nervous for Violet and the people she was placing trust in. I won't go any further into that and spoil anything, but let me tell you - it is a very engaging plot. So, if you liked The Body Finder, you are going to enjoy reading this. It is so much better, and definitely has me wanting to see where Derting takes the story next!

The story of Violet continues and absolutly loved this series, this book was a real page-turner like the first one but this one I felt had more action and suspense, and i simply didn't want to put the book down. The relationship with Jay dissapointed me a little bit in the second book, because I felt like the first book made their relationship so strong and dynamic, and when Violet said she and Jay broke up I was like what? did I miss something? I thought she was joking, I thought they were just having a fight and felt she took it to the extreme. The rest of the story though was amazing, and I loved the intensity that this book brought, and I cannot wait for these books to continue, this is probably my favorite YA series that i've read and can't wait to see where this story and Kimberly Derting takes us.

Violet has a special gift; she can sense the echoes of those who've been murdered. She can find the killers by matching the imprint that clings to them. She has kept this a secret from all those but those closest to her, but when she discovers the body of a young boy she also draws the attention of the FBI and this she finds very unsettling.A new family start at school; Mike and Megan both catch the eye of other pupils for different reasons, this leaves Violet feeling worried and from their home she can see the light that comes from a killer. Soon Violet she is digging into Mike's tragic family history, she stumbles upon a dark truth that could put everyone in danger. The second book in the Body Finder series is just as face moving and intriguing as the first. A good continuation of The Body Finder. In this sequel, Violet's ability to sense the dead and those who killed them attract the attention of a mysterious woman who works with the FBI and Violet uncovers a crime affecting the lives of her friends. Violet is slowly learning how to deal with and make use of her special talent and it will be interesting to see how she continues to develop as a character. A good read for fans of young adult paranormal novels.

Desires of the Dead is a wonderful follow-up to The Body Finder. This series is so original and it is one of the many reasons I am in love with it!Desires of the Dead takes place a few months after the events in The Body Finder. Jay and Violent are officially a couple and they are absolutely adorable together! Jay really is the perfect boyfriend. Violet had a few annoying moments, but I understand why she acted the way she did. I felt that Derting developed the characters, especially Jay and Violet, a lot more in this book, and I was happy for that.Desires of the Dead is very different from the first one, it had a different feel to it and it was not as creepy, but it was still fantastic in its own right. It took me a little bit to figure out where the story was going, but once I figured it out I was hooked! Kimberly Derting is a wonderful author, and I can not wait to read more books from her!

I loved The Body Finder so much that Ms. Derting instantly cemented herself a place on my auto-buy list. Without a doubt, The Body Finder is one of the best YA books from 2010. Ms. Derting succeeded in crafting a suspenseful story with an intriguing plot and compelling characters. The characterizations are amazing and the villains are simply unforgettable. In Desires of the Dead, Ms. Derting not only delivers another suspenseful storyline, she deftly weaves a gripping and HOT romance between Jay and Violet. Their love story is blended beautifully throughout the story, so much so that you'll have a hard time letting them go. Despite the fact that their relationship has matured and that they have grown as characters, there is still an element of giddiness, innocence and newness to what they share. The intimacy and sexual exploration that they share is not only sweet, emotional and realistic, it's breathtaking. While Desires of the Dead remains captivating and intriguing, it doesn't have the same edge and fear factor as its predecessor, The Body Finder. The suspense in this book will keep you on the edge of your seat, but it's just not as intense as The Body Finder. The serial killer element from the first book was riveting and down-right scary. I loved the POV from the serial killer and the tone and atmosphere that it set for The Body Finder.Overall, Desires of the Dead is definitely worth reading. Beautifully written and clever, this suspenseful tale will leave you eagerly awaiting the next story. This series manages to maintain pitch-perfect addictive romance, danger and excitement. It's everything that a reader could want.Notable Scene:The blackness was stifling, overwhelming. She was afraid it was going to suffocate her. But it was the cold that was unbearable. She searched around her once more, exactly as she'd done every few moments for the hours -- or days -- that she'd been trapped inside. Time had stopped holding any tangible meaning as seconds stretched into minutes, stretched into hours. Stretched into days.It was useless, her efforts futile. There was no escape, and she already knew it, but her warning survival instincts refused to allow her to surrender...to accept her fate. There was no light. Not a trace. Not even a flicker. And no light meant no openings. But she searched anyway, because she couldn't give up, feeling with her fingertips along every surface she could find...the floor...the walls...the corners. They were all too familiar to her now, and her skin was raw from probing the unyielding and punishing surfaces.Panic took hold, again, and she screamed, beating her bruised fists against the walls that confined her. The voice that came out of her mouth was foreign, even to her own ears. It was weak and small. It sounded like someone who had already conceded to death. The darkness closed in on her, filling her lungs until it was hard to breathe and impossible to scream any longer. The sounds of her stranger's voice rasped and echoed around her until she found herself gasping to catch real air...clean air...undark air.The Body Finder Series:1. The Body Finder2. DESIRES OF THE DEAD, by Kimberly Derting, is the continuation of The Body Finder series. We left off with Violet and Jay turning their friendship into a relationship amid Violet coming out about her ability to sense the dead and the respective killer. Where I felt The Body Finder lacked in action, Desires of the Dead definitely upped the anty. Many heart-pounding situations were happening simultaneously, and I found myself speeding through the book to get to the end. Violet and Jay are the sweetest couple (probably ever) and I love how they went through numerous ups and downs together throughout the book. Violet's gift and her solo exploration of it was the main issue that poked holes in this relationship and showed them how to make it stronger. I liked the introduction of new characters in this book. Sara, the FBI agent, and her 'helper', Rafe, added to the mix of this really great sophomore novel of the series. I was intrigued (and still am) with Rafe and his mysersious connection with Violet. I hope to see these characters in future books. My love for Violet and Jay, many new characters, and this cover (BEAUTIFUL!) really made this book linger in my mind long after it was finished. I cannot wait for the next one!

Summary: VIOLET AMBROSE'S SECRET IS OUTViolet has a curious gift: the ability to sense the echoes emitted by murder victims. Only her boyfriend Jay and her closest family know. But when she locates the body of a missing boy sought by the FBI she puts herself firmly on their radar.NOW SHE'S BEING WATCHEDAs if dealing with regular calls from the FBI isn't enough, threatening notes are being left on her doorstep, and she feels disturbing echoes around the home of Jay's new best friend. She tells herself she's protecting him, but is their fledgling relationship strong enough to cope?As Violet faces her fears alone she uncovers dark truths that lead her to danger...Review:Violet has a secret. The dead call out to her. She can't hear them speak, but she can the imprints of their death and that same imprint is on their killers. Only her family and her boyfriend, Jay, know she has this ability. She sees and hears the echos of the deadViolet has the ability to detect echos left behind by murder victims, the same echos that are carried around by their killers. This has always been a closely guarded secret known only by her family and her best friend (and now boyfriend) Jay but it now looks like someone else has found out. With the FBI constantly asking questions and someone leaving threatening notes for Violet she has a lot on her plate. But why is she finding it so difficult to turn to Jay for help? This is the sequel to Dertling's The Body Finder. And while I liked the first book better, this one was a good solid read. Rumor has it there will be more books in this series and I'm looking forward to finding out what Violet does with her ability. What I Liked: The difference: Paranormal is the buzz word in young adult novels these days. However, much if it is centered around angels, demons, wolves and vampires. The Body Finder and Desires of the Dead is a refreshing break from the norm. The pacing: Even though I was not surprised the events in the book, I felt Dertling did a nice job of creating a suspenseful story. The pacing is just right for building that suspense. And even though it is a sequel, it would work well as a read alone. Dertling pretty much ties up all the loose ends in The Body Finder. What I Don't Like: Violet's friends. Jay is wonderful, but Chelsea is down right irritating. I suppose she's is to be the stereotypical selfish teenage girl. She did come across as spoiled, but rather flat. She's incredibly annoying and I'm not sure why Violet puts up with her. Violet's secretiveness and lack of self preservation: Violet keeps to many secrets to herself. You would have thought she would have learned her lesson from the first book. She keeps putting herself into situations that anyone with a bit of sense would avoid. Lack of parental involvement: I also found it disturbing that her parents are not more protective, especially after what happened to her in the first book. These annoyances aside, it is an overall good read, one that sparks an interest in readers that will keep them coming back to see what happens next.

In “Desires of the Dead” by Kimberly Derting, Violet Ambrose is drawn to the echoes of the dead, who long to be noticed and put to rest properly. This specific echo is that of a young boy which draws attention to Violet in a big way and threatens her secretive gift and way of life. Bravo to Kimberly Derting for creating a sequel that is just as intriguing and suspenseful as the original. The storyline progresses in such a way that one will follow along easily and quickly become engrossed in the book. Kimberly Derting is a prolific writer and I expect much more success in her future. This book is intended for the Young Adult audience or anyone who appreciates a good YA work of fiction. Those who are equally interested in paranormal and mystery thrillers, as well as romantic fiction will enjoy this book and its intricate combination of each. It’s my opinion that this series is a must read for everyone. There is so much variety that I’m certain no one will be left disappointed. One of my favorite things about this storyline is actually the echoes and imprints that only Violet can detect. You’ll be surprised that many have been experienced in your own life. For anyone who may have missed “The Body Finder”, I recommend that you pick it up now and start the adventure that will have you coming back for more. I anxiously await the next story of Violet’s life and what changes and experiences lay ahead for her.

Desires of the Dead - Kimberly Derting

Prologue

Violet leaned forward on her hands and knees over the frozen landscape. Inside her boots, her toes felt as if icy shards were burrowing beneath her skin and slithering into her veins. Her fingers were very likely frostbitten within her gloves.

The flashlight’s beam slashed through the veil of blackness that had settled over the wintry forest, creating a spotlight where Violet had been trying to uncover the ground beneath the soft layer of snow.

In her drugged state, she couldn’t be certain that she wasn’t hallucinating as she stared at the man who towered over her. His weathered skin seemed to glow with an unnatural life of its own. It was both strange and beautiful.

But her thoughts were thick, and she struggled for each one, dredging them up from the swampy depths of her confused mind.

He spoke to her, unaware that her brain filtered his words, jumbling them and making them something less than coherent. She tried to concentrate as the tranquilizing sensation bled through her, deadening her senses.

But she was cognizant enough to be afraid—terrified, even—of this man. She could understand enough of what he was saying to recognize that he was disturbed. And dangerous.

He’d followed her. In the middle of the night. And even through the haze that distorted her awareness, she realized that he must have known why she was there. That he somehow knew she had found the body.

She glanced down at his hand, at what he held there, and her tangled thoughts immediately cleared.

She watched while he gripped the handle of the shotgun tightly in his fingers, and then he looked at her. I’m really sorry that you found her, he explained sadly. I didn’t want anyone else to die.

Chapter 1

January, Five Weeks Earlier

Chelsea leaned down to Violet like she had a secret to tell, something she didn’t want anyone else to hear. Check out the new eye candy! Chelsea shouted, making Violet jump.

Violet was pretty sure that everyone in the cafeteria had just heard her friend. As usual, Chelsea’s internal filter seemed to be turned off.

Come to think of it, Violet couldn’t remember Chelsea ever screening her words.

The boy Chelsea was referring to happened to be walking right past them and, like everyone else, he’d heard her too—he would have had to be deaf not to hear—and he looked up in time to catch Violet glancing his way. Chelsea turned back to Jules and Claire, and pretended to laugh at something funny they’d said, giving the impression that it had been Violet who’d made the outrageous comment.

He smiled sheepishly at Violet and kept on walking. Violet felt her cheeks burning, and she was grateful that he at least had the good sense to look embarrassed by all the attention he was drawing. As humiliated as Violet was, she also felt a little sorry for him. It must suck to be the new kid in school. Even a really good-looking new kid.

As she watched, a girl joined him. Violet might have guessed from the resemblance—the similarity in coloring between the two of them—that they were related, except she didn’t have to guess; Violet already knew that the girl was his younger sister.

They had a new student every now and then at White River High School, but in a town as small as Buckley, Washington, the fact that there were two new students on the very same day was cause for major gossip. Even if they were brother and sister.

Violet watched the pair until they found a table at the far end of the cafeteria, away from the activity and the busier tables at the center of the large, noisy space, and then she turned to Chelsea.

"Thanks a lot, Chels. I’m sure that wasn’t at all awkward for him." Violet glanced down and examined the contents of her plastic tray. The pizza looked greasy and runny, and the applesauce had a faintly grayish hue to it. The food made her lose her appetite altogether.

Chelsea grinned back at her. No problem, Vi. You know me: I’m a giver. I just wanted to make him feel welcome. She shoved a spoonful of the grim-looking applesauce into her mouth, smiling around the flimsy plastic utensil. She gazed over Violet’s shoulder to where the two new students sat by themselves. If he didn’t want people talking about him, he probably shouldn’t look so tasty. She was still gawking at them when her face wrinkled up and she pulled the spoon from her mouth. What’s your boyfriend doing over there?

Violet twisted in her seat so she could see what Chelsea was talking about just as Jay joined the two new kids at their table. He sat beside the girl, but he was already talking to her brother like they were old friends. And then he turned and pointed in Violet’s direction—right at her, in fact—and smiled when he saw that she was watching him. He waved at the same time the new guy looked up to see her studying them.

It was the second time she’d been caught staring at the new kid.

Violet tried to smile, but it didn’t actually reach her mouth. She thought about pretending she hadn’t seen them but realized it was too late, so before turning around she gave a halfhearted wave. She hoped the new boy wasn’t telling Jay that she’d just called him eye candy . . . especially since she hadn’t. Jay had been her best friend long before he was ever her boyfriend, so she hoped he would know she wasn’t the one who’d said it.

Oh, look, Claire announced, typically unaware of anyone else’s discomfort. I think Jay’s inviting them over here.

Of course he was. Why wouldn’t he be?

Great, Violet muttered under her breath. She didn’t bother turning around this time; instead she just glared at Chelsea.

Chelsea feigned innocence. What? You don’t want New Boy to come sit with us? Claire and Jules don’t mind, do you?

Jules was too busy eating to get involved in their conversation. The lanky tomboy looked like a prison inmate as she leaned over her tray, one arm wrapped protectively around it, shoveling the less-than-edible-looking food into her mouth.

Claire shook her head. Of course not.

Chelsea continued, You are one lucky girl, Violet. That boyfriend of yours has a heart of gold. He’s just trying to make the new guy feel at home. And then she added, Yet, when I do it, you get all bent and give me dirty looks. You should try being a little more like Jay and me. Try opening up your heart . . . just a little.

Oh wait. Never mind, Claire announced, ignoring Chelsea. The new kids are staying where they are. But here comes Jay.

Violet shot a warning look at Chelsea as Jay sat down beside her. He slipped his hand beneath the back of her shirt, tracing his thumb across the small of her back. It was so familiar, his touch, yet disarming at the same time. Violet leaned into him and he kissed her forehead. His lips were soft but left her skin tingling. She could hardly believe that her stomach still did somersaults whenever he was near.

What are you guys talking about? Jay asked, and Violet wondered if she only imagined the implication she heard in his words.

Chelsea smiled sweetly. We were just curious about your new friends over there. Well . . . more about him than her.

Chelsea Morrison was a pretty girl. She had smooth skin; a slim, athletic body; and shiny, chestnut-colored hair. It wasn’t until she opened her mouth that the near-perfect illusion of femininity was shattered. Fortunately for Chelsea, she couldn’t care less what people thought of her . . . one way or the other. Chelsea refused to conform to what anyone else expected her to be.

Jay chuckled at Chelsea. "You mean Mike? he asked, giving the new kid a name. I was just asking if he wanted to come sit with us, but for some reason—he glanced at Violet with raised eyebrows—he didn’t want to. Is there anything you want to tell me? Like why Mike might prefer not to sit at the same table with you?"

"It wasn’t me . . . it was her!" Violet, nearly choking on the bite of soggy pizza she was trying to swallow, pointed at Chelsea.

Chelsea laughed, and even Jules stopped stuffing her face long enough to smile appreciatively. Claire was the only one who remained straight-faced, mostly because she didn’t seem to be listening anymore. Her fingers worked viciously over the keys of her cell phone; she was absorbed in a long series of text messages . . . probably to someone sitting only a few tables away.

I know, Jay admitted. Chelsea’s the only girl at this school who would actually have the balls to say something like that right in front of someone.

Chelsea did her best to look indignant, her eyes widening in mock outrage. "Whatever! Why couldn’t it have been Jules? Or Claire?"

"What? I didn’t say anything," Claire piped in, suddenly paying attention.

Chelsea rolled her eyes at Claire’s serious tone. "Paranoid much? No one was actually accusing you of anything. Besides, what do I care if he knows it was me? There’s nothing wrong with noticing that he’s . . . mmm, delicious. If he plays his cards right, he could end up as Mr. Chelsea."

As if that’s even possible, Chels, Claire declared. "The guy doesn’t change his name; you’d have to change yours."

Chelsea rolled her eyes again, this time so that Claire couldn’t see her, as she visibly bit back her irritation. Thanks for the lesson in social convention, Claire-bear.

Claire shrugged and smiled ingenuously. No problem.

Violet glanced at Jay, grinning over Claire’s innate ability to annoy Chelsea without repercussions.

Violet envied Claire for that. But she knew that the only reason Chelsea didn’t turn her wrath on Claire was because, more than anything else in the world, Chelsea hated apologizing. So somehow, with a strength of will that she was unable to find when dealing with anyone else, Chelsea managed to curb her temper when it came to Claire’s sensitive feelings.

Violet found it highly entertaining.

But Jay was grinning back at Violet for an entirely different reason. He bent toward her, and sparks of anticipation crackled through her body. His lips quietly brushed over hers, right there in the middle of the crowded cafeteria, just the whisper of a kiss. Yet Violet was powerless to stop him.

Even if she’d wanted to, her body never seemed to follow the simplest of instructions when it came to Jay. He was like her Kryptonite.

Chelsea stared at them disgustedly. Will you guys stop it already? I think I just threw up in my mouth a little bit. She shuddered exaggeratedly. If you can’t wait until you’re alone, I’m gonna have to ask you to find another place to sit. And then her short attention span got the best of her, and she nodded her head in the direction of Mike and his sister. So what’s their story?

Jay shrugged. I have no idea; I just met him today. He’s in my first-period class. His family just moved here. That’s about all I know.

"Why here?" Jules asked, and Violet had to admit that she was wondering the exact same thing.

It wasn’t as if Buckley was a first-choice kind of town. And it didn’t have particularly easy access to anywhere important. It was more of a pass-through city on a small stretch of highway that headed nowhere in particular.

Jay shrugged again.

That’s weird. You should find out, Chelsea commanded. What about her? Does she have a name? Not that I care really, but it would be rude to call her ‘new girl’ once Mike and I are dating.

I have an idea, Jay suggested, leaning toward Chelsea from across the table. "Why don’t you put together a list of questions, in order of importance, and I’ll have him fill out the answers? Kind of like new-kid homework. He smiled innocently. You don’t have to do it now, of course; just try to get it to me before the end of the day."

Ha-ha. Chelsea made a face. You’re freakin’ hilarious, Jay. And then she turned to Violet. That must be why you like him so much. ’Cause other than that, I just don’t get it.

Claire’s brow creased, as though Chelsea’s statement didn’t make sense. She decided to help Violet out. No, he’s cute too. And when Jules started laughing, she added, Well, he is!

Chelsea was unmoved by Claire’s explanation and, as usual, had to have the last word. "No offense, Violet, but no one’s that cute. That’s all I have to say about it. And then, in usual Chelsea fashion, she changed the subject before Jay had the chance to remind them all that he was sitting right there. Hey, don’t forget, we’ve got a date on Saturday."

I didn’t forget, Violet assured her. I’ll take any excuse I can to go into the city.

Besides, Chelsea might be obnoxious, but Violet knew they’d have fun. Plus it was a chance to get out of Buckley for the day. . . . She wasn’t about to turn down an opportunity like that.

At the sound of her uncle’s voice coming from the back door, Jay threw Violet off his lap.

Violet giggled as she hit the cushions on the back of the couch.

What are you doing? she complained. It’s just Uncle Stephen.

Jay sat up. I know, but ever since the Homecoming Dance, I feel like he’s always watching us. I just don’t want him to think we’re doing anything we shouldn’t be.

The Homecoming Dance. It had been almost three months since that night, but the memories still made Violet shudder.

Not a day went by that she wasn’t grateful Jay was still alive. Grateful the bullet from the killer’s gun had only grazed his shoulder, despite the fact that the man—one of her uncle’s own officers—had been aiming directly for Jay’s heart.

If her uncle hadn’t shown up at the dance when he did, firing the fatal shot that took the killer down, neither she nor Jay would have made it out of there alive.

Jay had always liked her uncle before then, but now it was something closer to worship. And even though Jay would never admit it out loud, Violet suspected that Jay felt indebted to her uncle for saving his life . . . a debt he knew he would never be able to repay.

A debt he wouldn’t even owe if it weren’t for Violet. It was Violet’s fault that he’d been in that situation in the first place. Violet and her . . . ability.

All because she was different. In more ways than most people could, or would ever, understand.

The dead called to Violet.

They used echoes that only Violet could sense, pulling her onward, steering her to their locations. These echoes came in many forms. Smells, sounds, sometimes an inexplicable color. Anything.

Yet not all the dead had echoes, only those who had died prematurely, their lives cut short by the actions of others. And it wasn’t just the dead who stood out to Violet but also those who had killed. They bore a mark as well: an imprint identical to the echo of their victim.

The imprint might fade, yes, but only over time. And only slightly. It would remain with them forever, in some form, an unambiguous reminder of the life they’d stolen. A reminder they would unwittingly carry with them.

And Violet was the only one who knew it was there. She was the only one who would ever see, or feel, or taste, what they had done.

They couldn’t hide it from her.

What are you two doing? Her uncle’s teasing voice came into the room before he did. But his voice was the second warning that they were no longer alone, since Violet had tasted his presence long before he’d actually stepped into her house. Ever since saving her and Jay at Homecoming, her uncle carried an imprint of his own. The bitter taste of dandelions still smoldered on Violet’s tongue whenever he was near. A taste that Violet had grown to accept. And even, to some degree, to appreciate. Nothing your parents wouldn’t approve of, I hope, he added.

Violet flashed Jay a wicked grin. "We were just making out, so if you could make this quick, we’d really appreciate it."

Jay jumped up from beside her. She’s kidding, he blurted out. We weren’t doing anything.

Her uncle Stephen stopped where he was and eyed them both carefully. Violet could’ve sworn she felt Jay squirming, even though every single muscle in his body was frozen in place. Violet smiled at her uncle, trying her best to look guilty-as-charged.

Finally he raised his eyebrows, every bit the suspicious police officer. Your parents asked me to stop by and check on you on my way home. They won’t be back until late. Can I trust the two of you here . . . alone?

Of course you can— Jay started to say.

Probably not— Violet answered at the same time. And then she caught a glimpse of the horror-stricken expression on Jay’s face, and she laughed. Relax, Uncle Stephen, we’re fine. We were just doing homework.

Her uncle looked at the pile of discarded books on the table in front of the couch. Not one of them was open. He glanced skeptically at Violet but didn’t say a word.

We may have gotten a little distracted, she responded, and again she saw Jay shifting nervously.

After several warnings, and a promise from Violet that she would lock the doors behind him, Uncle Stephen finally left the two of them alone again.

Jay was glaring at Violet when she peeked at him as innocently as she could manage. Why would you do that to me?

Why do you care what he thinks we’re doing? Violet had been trying to get Jay to admit his new hero worship of her uncle for months, but he was too stubborn—or maybe he honestly didn’t realize it himself—to confess it to her.

Because, Violet, he said dangerously, taking a threatening step toward her. But his scolding was ruined by the playful glint in his eyes. He’s your uncle, and he’s the police chief. Why poke the bear?

Violet took a step back, away from him, and he matched it, moving toward her. He was stalking her around the coffee table now, and Violet couldn’t help giggling as she retreated.

But it was too late for her to escape. Jay was faster than she was, and his arms captured her before she’d ever had a chance. Not that she’d really tried.

He hauled her back down onto the couch, the two of them falling heavily into the cushions, and this time he pinned her beneath him.

Stop it! she shrieked, not meaning a single word. He was the last person in the world she wanted to get away from.

I don’t know . . . he answered hesitantly. I think you deserve to be punished. His breath was balmy against her cheek, and she found herself leaning toward him rather than away. "Maybe we should do some more homework."

Homework had been their code word for making out before they’d realized that they hadn’t been fooling anyone.

But Jay was true to his word, especially his code word, and his lips settled over hers. Violet suddenly forgot that she was pretending to break free from his grip. Her frail resolve crumbled. She reached out, wrapping her arms around his neck, and pulled him closer to her.

Jay growled from deep in his throat. "Okay, homework it is."

He pulled her against him, until they were lying face-to-face, stretched across the length of the couch. It wasn’t long before she was restless, her hands moving impatiently, exploring him. She shuddered when she felt his fingers slip beneath her shirt and brush over her bare skin. He stroked her belly and higher, the skin of his hands rough against her soft flesh. His thumb brushed the base of her rib cage, making her breath catch.

And then, like so many times before, he stopped, abruptly drawing back. He shifted only inches, but those inches felt like miles, and Violet felt the familiar surge of frustration.

He didn’t say a word; he didn’t have to. Violet understood perfectly. They’d gone too far. Again. But Violet was frustrated, and it was getting harder and harder to ignore her disappointment. She knew they couldn’t play this unsatisfying game forever.

So you’re going to Seattle tomorrow? He used the question to fill the rift between them, but his voice shook and Violet was glad he wasn’t totally unaffected.

She wasn’t as quick to pretend that everything was okay, especially when what she really wanted to do was to rip his shirt off and unbutton his jeans.

But they’d talked about this. And, time and time again, they’d decided that they needed to be sure. One hundred percent. Because once they crossed that line . . .

She and Jay had been best friends since the first grade, and up until last fall that’s all they’d ever been. Now that she was in love with him, she couldn’t imagine losing him because they made the wrong decision.

Or made it too soon.

She decided to let Jay have his small talk. For now.

"Yeah, Chelsea wants to go down to the waterfront and maybe do some shopping. It’s easier to be around her when it’s just the two of us. You know, when she’s not always . . . on."

You mean when she’s not picking on someone?

Exactly.

Jay’s brow furrowed, and for a moment Violet wondered what he was thinking. Then he smiled at her as he tucked his hand behind his head, getting comfortable again. His eyes glittered mischievously, reminding Violet that he was still her best friend. You know she made me a list, don’t you?

What do you mean?

A list. Chelsea made me a list of questions to ask Mike.

Violet laughed, pulling herself up. It was too ridiculous to believe. But it was Chelsea, so of course it was true.

What did you do with it? You didn’t give it to him, did you? Violet asked, her eyes wide with shock.

Jay sat up too and grinned, and Violet was sure that he had. And then he shook his head. Nah. I told her if she really wanted the answers, she’d have to give it to him herself.

Violet relaxed back into the couch. Did she?

Jay shrugged. I dunno. You never know with Chelsea. He leaned forward, watching Violet closely as he ran his thumb down the side of her cheek. Anyway, he said, switching the subject, I get off work at six tomorrow; maybe we can hook up after that. He moved closer, grinning. And you can tell me how much you missed me.

He kissed her, at first quickly. Then the kiss deepened, and she heard him groan. This time, when he pulled back, there was indecision in his eyes.

Violet wanted to say something sarcastic and sharp-witted to lighten the mood, but with Jay staring at her like that, any hope of finding a clever response was lost. She could feel herself disappearing into the depths of that uncertain look.

She ignored the common sense that warned her not to lean in for another kiss. She much preferred giving in to that other part of her. The part that wanted
