App Success Stories - Sean A. Casto

    Conclusion

    Preface

One thing we’d like to make clear is that we are not professional writers. This book was written by professional app developers.

I’d like to personally thank the many hardworking developers that put their faith in posting their app on PreApps and have now chosen to divulge their secrets of success.

Mobile is a relatively young industry yet quickly becoming the go-to market to generate significant money. Entrepreneurs, investors and developers are seeking to capitalize on this ever-evolving industry. As the industry continues to evolve and new best practices and success stories form, look for updates to this first-edition book.

We welcome your feedback on the content in this book and its tools for making an app successful. Please contact us at ebook@preapps.com with your comments.

    Chapter 1: Introduction

    INTRODUCTION

When officially launching the Apple App Store, Steve Jobs stated in an interview with USA Today that the App Store would launch with more than 500 apps. There are now over 1.8 million apps collectively on the market. With no shortage of books about how to develop an app, everyone and their mother can now create one. But to make an app successful, you need to do much more then just program. Nearly two-thirds of app developers do not breakeven on their investment. According to the leading mobile app marketing agency, TradeMob, 63% developers have had their app downloaded 50,000 times or less overall. Although 50,000 may seam significant, in reality it is not. To make an app a success takes skill, luck, and experience. The following developers beat the odds, and are now in the top percentage of developers who have hit it big.

If you’re contemplating developing a mobile app, you may have already realized that competition is stiff, but do you know just how stiff? While there’s no magic formula, but there are ways developers can increase their chances for success. The market wants to be fed, and by following the lead of others who have paved the way with the creation of successful apps, new developers can gain the insight and tools to profit.

Unlike other books that take a dry, mechanical approach to mobile apps, this book tells the stories of real developers and how they beat the odds. In each chapter, you’ll follow along as each app developer briefly recounts the tale of his success.

THE REALITY OF DEVELOPER TURNED MILLIONAIRE

We’ve all heard it — the tale of the mobile app developer who made it big. But in reality, is this simply an urban myth? Surely not, after all, we’ve all probably enjoyed the fruits of these labors. But one has to ask themselves, who are these developers-turned-millionaires who have transformed indie programming from a hobby into a viable multi-million dollar venture?

From one developer working in a bedroom, to a small team working from a garage, independent developers have turned the world of programming on its head. It could be thanks to the rise of the App Store, combined with a dose of creative genius and a knack for what’s going to attract users.

The developers who are skilled, lucky and experienced enough to find success tend to find not just a little success, but unprecedented success. In fact, day and night, thanks to the hundreds of millions of dollars being spent on apps each and every month, money seems to magically appear in their bank accounts. The number of apps that have been sold on the numerous App Stores are in the billions — a staggering figure by any account.

The early success of the app-developer-turned-millionaire brought about two interesting discoveries: 1) With a lot of luck, a simple, inexpensive mobile app could make millions of dollars, and 2) apps could drive users to purchase mobile devices such as the iPhone. The simple app that goes viral encourages users to show off their experience on the iPhone to non-Apple users.

    THE APP STORE GOLD RUSH

Even before the App Store was officially launched, there were developers who had the foresight to predict the enormous success the App Store would bring, particularly as Apple became an international powerhouse with iPods and iPhones. It wasn’t difficult to see that the opportunities for software development utilizing the iOS platform had the potential to turn into what some were anxious to refer to as a gold rush, similar to what was seen in the world of PC platform development a decade or so earlier.

Unfortunately, while the term gold rush has connotations of immense and relatively fast success, there’s also its flip side—the more likely potential for failure. While development for the App Store combines a chance for immense success with the high probability of failure, most media outlets tended to focus only on the successes. The riskiness inherent to a gold rush was ignored, and the App Store was portrayed as more of a sure-fire way to strike it big. For the people who failed, they realized that success in the App Store isn’t easy to capture. To succeed, developers need to create innovative and quality apps in conjunction with marketing to promote apps effectively.

We still see developers striving for gold. It’s natural to wonder, what is the lure, given the unlikely probability of reaching the status of, say, Angry Birds? Perhaps it’s the natural tendency to want to take risks that keeps developers coming back. In fact, the unpredictability of success in the App Stores may be its selling point for the thousands who want to risk it all and play the odds. As conveyed in the following stories, by utilizing the right tools and knowledge of the market, your app will have a far better chance of
