Chapter 1

Sandra Scibelli finished taking her patient’s blood pressure and smiled down at him. It was quiet in the ER, which was unexpected as the night before holidays could be a little crazy.

Will it be much longer? My poor wife was up getting things ready for Thanksgiving and had just gotten to sleep when I woke her up to bring me in here.

Mr. Monroe had slept away almost four hours while his wife sat beside his bed in a hardback chair. That he thought of her made Sandra wonder if he’d taken a turn at being in that chair himself and she said as much. He nodded. Yep a few times and if it isn’t serious I’d rather be the patient.

He had come in with severe bronchitis complicated by dehydration. With oxygen and fluids administered with an IV he rested easier. She patted his arm and said, You’re looking good. The doctor will be in shortly to release you.

Sandra turned from washing her hands, and she almost bumped into Marge, her friend and co-worker. Marge stepped back. You have a phone call.

Fear surged through Sandra. Three a.m. calls were scary even when a person was wide-awake. Walking quickly to the desk she picked up the phone and noticed her hands were shaking. Identifying herself she held her breath.

Mrs. Scibelli, this is Officer Talkins. We have your son Joshua here.

He didn’t add ‘again’ though his tone implied it. This was the third time in as many weeks and Sandra had a bad feeling he wasn’t calling to have her come down to get Josh this time. Her voice sounded stronger than she felt. What happened?

About the same as before except this time the three boys were drinking. I’m sorry, Mrs. Scibelli, but we are going to transport him over to juvenile hall. You can contact them in the morning.

Wait. Please. Would it help if his father came in with me? We could be there in forty-five minutes.

Silence filled the line. Sandra could tell the officer would rather release the boys to their parents especially with it being Thanksgiving, but it wasn’t looking good for them this time. She barely knew the two other boys, and nothing about their parents, though Josh had told her their parents were divorced. Well she and Kade weren’t divorced, at least not yet.

Not for the first time she questioned her decision in leaving him and moving Josh to a new school and in with her parents. It broke her heart seeing her son so unhappy. He had gone from a happy A and B student active in sports, to being a sullen young man failing his grades.

She jumped when Officer Talkin said, Okay come on in to the station and we’ll talk, but I’m not making any promises.

As soon as she hung up the phone Marge came over. They had been friends since grade school. Marge knew about her leaving Kade and moving in with her parents. Knew and didn’t agree with Sandra’s decision but still supported it, or to be exact supported her as a friend.

Get going, we’re slow and if something major occurs I’ll call you, otherwise don’t come back tonight. Glancing at the clock she said, Whoops. Three o’clock? Guess I should say don’t come back this morning.

As soon as Sandra got out the hospital door she grabbed her cell and dialed Kade’s number. She didn’t want to, especially since she hadn’t let him know about the two other times Josh had been picked up. That alone was going to infuriate Kade when he found out. Feeling things were spinning out of her control she counted down the rings. What would she do if she couldn’t get a hold of him? Would the officer accept Josh’s grandfather stepping in? It wouldn’t help that the other two boys didn’t seem to have family support. When she heard the click and a recording come on her voice broke as she forced the words out. Kade, it’s Sandra, if you’re there, please pick up.

It sounded like the phone dropped, then Kade’s deep voice came over the line. Damn, couldn’t find the phone. Sandra? What time is it? What’s wrong?

Chapter 2

Kade was out the door seconds after hanging up. Sandra had said Josh had been picked up by the police. What the hell? This didn’t sound like Josh. But then the kid was changing almost in front of his eyes. Kade glanced down at his speedometer, willed himself to slow down. Driving sleet hit the windshield making visibility poor, and the road conditions were horrible. The only thing he had going for getting to Burington in a decent time was that there was no traffic.

The empty road gave Kade time to think back to when his life started falling apart. At the time, he thought it was the night Sandra told him she was going to spend the summer at her parents, but he now knew it had been going south for weeks, probably months, before that. Stupid,
