I Spy GI Series 1 Group 4 - Di Allen

    Welcome. I’m glad you’re here!

This book isn’t just for reading - it’s for having fun, being part of a team, and discovering some useful things to help you be successful.

Before we start there’s something you need to know – GI stands for God Investigators. Can you remember that? Otherwise you might wonder what it’s all about when you come across I Spy GI.

We’re going to spy on some of the people in the Bible. What can we find out about God? Does it have anything to do with us today?

Check out the evidence. You might be surprised what God investigators find out!

Some of you may have heard these stories lots of times, for others, they’ll be quite new. There’s always something different and new to learn.

    Meet some God investigators

Grammy: Hi, I’m the one who’s put this all together. I love kids, and I love Jesus. I hope you’ll have great fun as we work on this together. By the way, I live in Australia. If you live somewhere else in the world, a couple of words in the stories might be spelt differently, or I might say things differently, but I’m sure you’ll work it out.

Gramps: Gramps is a very wise man. That’s partly because he is nearly seventy (actually by the time you read this he might be seventy or more!). Gramps loves Jesus too – he used to be a church pastor. He has some challenges for you and our team of investigators.

EyeSpy01: EyeSpy01 is a special investigator friend of Gramps. EyeSpy01 is his code name. He’s probably just a bit older than you are. He’s quite clever and he loves Jesus. Gramps has asked him to help us with the I Spy GI Life Apps.

Other God investigators: As part of our investigations, some God investigators will be doing an I Spy GI Interview. You can look at a sample interview on Photobucket. They’re using their code names. Read on to find out more about that.

You: We need more help with our investigations. We’re hoping you’ll become one of our investigators too. Will you join the team? We need you. Maybe you’d like to choose a code name to use when you’re doing your investigations.

What exciting things are coming up? I can’t wait to find out!

Some useful things for investigators to know

    The Evidence

All good investigators need to examine the evidence. What’s it all about, what happened, who was there? Think about the evidence. What does it mean?

    I Spy GI Interview

We pretend to step back in time, to when the evidence took place, to look for an eye witness. You’ll find an interview with someone who might have been there - and we ask them to tell us what happened. When you take up the I Spy GI Challenge, you can choose to be the reporter or the character we’re pretending to interview.

All good investigators should look for eye witnesses, don’t you agree?

    I Spy GI Life Apps

Gramps: Apps are things we use to help us. Sometimes life is easy, sometimes it’s hard. Did you know that in his Word, the Bible, God gives us lots of clues about how to be happy and successful?

I Spy GI Life Apps will help us uncover those clues. After each piece of evidence, I ask special investigator EyeSpy01 to report to me on the things he thinks we can learn from this. I hope it will help you.

Think about the evidence yourself. You can probably come up with your own good ideas as well. There’s a lot to learn!

    I Spy GI Challenge

Do you like a challenge? Gramps has some challenges for you and the team.

Gramps: OK everyone, are you ready? In each I Spy GI Case there’s a challenge for you. Good luck.

There are three levels of challenge. Which one are you up to?

Challenge Level 1: Act out the I Spy GI Interview

Find someone who’ll act out the I Spy GI Interview with you. It might be a friend, or a brother or sister, or even your mum or dad. You can be the reporter, or the character being interviewed. You can do it, it’s fun!

The scripts are repeated at the end of the book to make them easier to print if you want to use them.

Challenge Level 2: Write your own I Spy GI Interview

This is a tough one, only the most serious investigators will tackle this one. If that’s not you, skip to Challenge Level 3, that’s the fun one.

Read the evidence. Can you think of someone who might have been there when the evidence happened? You can make them up; they don’t have to be real.

Think of some questions you could ask that character about what happened. Write out your story like an interview, with one person asking questions and your made up character answering them.

Because you’re using your imagination, it could be anyone, or anything (even a mouse!). Write out a script using your questions and answers. You might even have better ideas than the ones we used - I wouldn’t be surprised!

Then, find someone near you who’ll do the interviews with you.

If you take up this challenge, we’d love to see your interview. If you want to, you can email it to us - see the contact information at the end of the book.

Challenge Level 3: Make a video clip

The real fun bit, for those who like this sort of thing, is to get someone to make a video clip of you acting out a script. You can use our script or your own script.

You can record the clip using a camera, video recorder, webcam, iPod or phone – anything that can make video clips.

You can see a sample video clip on Photobucket. We’ll tell you how to find it in the contact information at the end of the book.

When you’ve made your video clip, you can upload yours to Photobucket too - if you’re allowed to.

    Activ8

Activ8 is a fun activity for you. Sometimes you can do it by yourself, other times you might need a friend or two.

    BTG

BTG is our code name for Bible to Go. If we can get God’s word into our mind, we can take it wherever we go. As spies we need to get the advantage over the enemy. BTG will help you do just that. Be like Jesus, he used God’s Word, the Bible, to defeat the enemy. A little training now will last you a lifetime.

Don’t miss it, it’s fun too!

    I Spy GI Case Report

At the end of each case you get the chance to report on what you discovered. Did you learn anything new? Were you reminded of something? Did you enjoy an activity? All good investigators report in with their findings.

    I Spy GI Club

Do you have a bunch of friends you can get together to have fun with?

You could start an I Spy GI Club of your own.

Read the evidence. Enjoy the activities.

Make scripts and videos. Even upload them to Photobucket.

All the ideas you need are supplied in each book. But let’s get on with the evidence!

    I Spy GI Case 1

    No worries!

    Think spot

Have you ever been really hungry? What’s the longest time you’ve gone without food? What would you want to eat if you were really hungry?

    The Evidence

You can read this evidence in a Bible. Look in 1 Kings chapter 17.

    King Ahab

Israel had lots of kings over the years. Some were good kings who loved God and obeyed him, but some were bad kings. King Ahab didn’t love God. The Bible tells us that Ahab did more evil things than any of the kings that had ruled before him.

Ahab married Jezebel who was from another country and a different religion. Queen Jezebel worshipped the false god Baal and the false goddess Asherah too. Ahab began to serve these foreign gods, and Ahab taught the people of Israel to follow these false gods too.

King Ahab made the Lord very angry. The Lord is the God of Israel. He wanted the people to worship him. God sent a man named Elijah to speak to Ahab. Elijah told Ahab that God was not happy with him. To prove that God is in control, Elijah told King Ahab that there would be no rain or dew in the land for several years. In fact God told Elijah to tell the king that it wouldn’t rain again until Elijah said it would!

Now sometimes we wish it wouldn’t rain, don’t we? But we know that we really do need the rain. I think it might be good if it only rained at night. What do you think? But for these people it wasn’t going to rain at all. That’s bad!

    Elijah

Next God told Elijah to go and hide in a valley where there was a brook (a small stream). God told him that he could drink the water from the brook and that God would supply him with bread and meat every morning and every evening. Do you know how God supplied the food? God ordered some ravens (big black birds) to bring food to Elijah!

After a while the brook dried up (there was no rain, remember?). God told Elijah to go to Sidon (which was where bad Queen Jezebel had come from!). God told Elijah that he’d told a widow there to supply him with food.

A widow lady and her son

The drought was bad in the land. The crops weren’t growing, so food was very expensive. The lady’s husband had died (that’s why she’s called
