The Barbaric World
Just Another Day?
You have exactly 20 days to come up with the money, Harry O'Neil, or we will be coming over to make sure you never wake up.
20 days left. That was 19 days ago. It seems that the mob didn't take to well to Harry beating one of their enforcers near to death and has forwarded on his medical bills. This message was from their lawyers, which you can formally read as 'Guys Worse Than The Mob' for the purposes of Harry's life experience.
What am I going to do?
he asks himself.
The young man is sitting atop of one of the highest mountains in the game. Below him is a glorious scene of the sort that real life just can't produce.
The year is 2223. This is virtual reality as those in the past never knew it. He has been here for just over 3 months now and has managed to make quite a pretty penny testing the game, but the amount that the mob wants is 10 times that and the payout for the game that he is testing - at risk of his life - is only another 100,000. He needs around 1,000,000 US dollars or equivalent currency if he wants to survive to call tomorrow another day.
His hand runs through the perfect, soft green grass, collecting a little dew from this morning's fog. It feels so real that he cannot distinguish between it and whatever the reality of such a thing might feel like (Harry has never actually touched dew, as it probably doesn't exist anymore, but he figures that what the game creators decided it should feel like is what it actually felt like way back when).
I need help,
he says to the world around him.
A message pops up in his screen. It's from a GM he knows and has come to hate.
Goldie Locks,
he growls in annoyance. What do you want this time?
The message opens automatically. You can't block or refuse to open a GM message in the game. A counter starts in the corner of his view.
I hear you call and I offer you pain,
the message starts.
Harry looks around. He doesn't see Goldie Locks, but he could be here, even with Harry's very advanced level of senses.
There is a way to make the money you owe.
How do you know about that?
Harry asks out loud.
The message adjusts a little and says "ask no questions" on the next line.
Great. And?
He continues reading.
There is a way to make the money, but you will have to test something a bit more dangerous if you want it. I and my brethren of the Game Master Guild have been tasked with finding people of the correct level to face the challenges that this new opportunity offer. You are one level higher than the requirement and on the end of the list of 1,000,000.
Harry raises an eyebrow. He had thought he was one of the highest leveled characters in the game. He certainly only knows of a few others and hasn't ever met them.
There is a new expansion that is coming out shortly after this game does.
Harry stops reading and tries to throw the email away. He's not doing anything that dangerous.
I wouldn't do that,
Goldie Locks whispers in his ear.
He spins, but that freak isn't there.
Harry looks back at the email.
An assassin has been sent into the game. He knows where you are right now and is coming for you. That counter is the amount of time you have until he gets here.
The time clicks away and Harry looks concerned.
He has a virus, I will let you know, that allows him to kill you - permanently - with one blow. You will die if he and you meet.
Harry pauses and sighs. So, he has no choice.
What do I need to do?
he asks the email. It morphs.
An invitation appears. It shows only two words:
PUSH ACCEPT
Harry's hand reaches out. He has no idea what is waiting in this expansion for him. His friends, the first he's ever had, are in this world. He wanted to stay and play the game with them, but it looks like that's over too. The game has sucked him in again. When will he ever learn that he is not free and never will be?
His hand thumps the accept button. Pain laces through him and he falls to the ground. His entire body - EVERYTHING - is being ripped apart. He is fading away; the dream character, the game character dies. Harry is torn free. Free to another world. A game not unlikely this one, but with stakes far beyond what this one can offer. A new beginning, a new end. 'Burnt Crust Dragon Land 4000 x 4000 Expansion v 2.1' has begun.
Dragon Land
Men, women, children, furry beasts, something called a pedo bear grumble. It's not a continuous thing, but more like a sound that fills the air for short stretches, like the rolling of the sea, only to subside as the wave of sound is slowly drawn back after the need for release relaxes and the waiting returns.
You got a smoke?
a large panda asks.
Harry shakes his head again. This is not the first time and he's guessed now that this is more a habit for this guy more than anything else. He has a pack of the virtual world's finest in the front pocket of his tight leather armor and hasn't bothered to light a stick yet.
There's a pop and a flash of black smoke in front of everyone. No one looks up, the strangeness of the event having dissipated to become something very much normal from everyone's perspective.
OUCH!
the new occupant groans as he forms into a regular shape and sits up.
Harry notes, rather boredly, that this one is some sort of ninja. He's seen allot, but this one's gear is absolutely crap. The man looks around and stops when he sees Harry. He reaches into his back pocket, but then releases on noting how many people are around.
So he got in, eh?
Harry mutters.
He stands up and walks over to offer the man a hand. Some people look up, but assume that they are seeing two friends meet up.
What's your name?
he asks.
I can't tell you. You know that,
the man replies, his voice strangely modified by some sort of sound distortion device.
[I take it you are here to kill me?] Harry asks with a lot more calm than he feels.
[You are more relaxed than I expected about it,] the other replies.
[It's not the first time that this has happened.]
[I heard. He still has problems getting around.]
Harry cocks a smile. His assassin is not what he thought he'd be either.
[You will die before you have the chance to assassinate me,] he messages the man with surety.
[Is that a threat?]
The man reaches behind his back. Harry can't see his eyes, but he bets the man is ready to strike at the first sign of a threat.
[No. Actually, it's your reality.] Harry points at the man's gear, which is near starting area type stuff that wouldn't get him a raid in any of the weakest dungeons. [You are under geared for this. You know the rules of the game, yes?]
The man looks him up and down. He does.
[When the money runs out, send me a message. I'll send you 1 copper, so you can log out. Consider it your safety net. If you don't, you will join the millions who have died testing the game.]
Harry throws the guy an over the shoulder wave and walks off. This is a man who has faced real and game dangers well above a simple assassin. He certainly feels a little concern, but it is not the kind that eats at one in the night, but more one that you note and it disappears.
He sits, crosses his arms over his knees and stares at the floor. This assassin thing is not an issue. It is the game and paying back the lawyers before they decide to get more direct and come visit him while he's asleep in his Sleep Tech. He knows why they sent this guy in the game rather than real life and it's as simple as the fact that the Acceptable Crime Enforcement Unit would have them for dinner for killing someone without a request to do so filed at their offices. The whole thing would need to be investigated. It would take years. By that time, Harry could have died. If they want to kill him with no repercussions then this is where it needs to be done.
He fingers his sword. The weapon is quivering. He doesn't know what that means. The weapon has never done anything like that in the past. Does that mean it is afraid? What does it know that he doesn't?
A man enters. He looks like a doctor from those pictures of the world back around the 2000s, where medical care was done in large faculties by humans with knives and instruments, instead of machines and other newer items of mutilation.
Thank you for coming. Will Participant 52 come forward?
The ninja stands. He looks confused.
You are first for the stripping, please come this way.
The man looks back at Harry. There is a promise in that posture of his. It is not intimidating to the one that is receiving it.
The ninja works through the large white doors that slide open and closed with a nice whoosh sound that sounds very sterile and health care faculty like.
What do you suppose 'the stripping' means?
the fat guy next to Harry asks.
I don't know. I think we are all going to find out, though.
They wait. Characters go and don't return. By the end of it, there are Harry and the large man, who he has discovered is called 'Hogger' of all things, apparently due to his love of old motorcycles. They stare at the white doors feeling more than a little uncomfortable.
Why are we last?
he asks.
Harry shakes his head. This is getting a big concerning. He thinks back to
