About this ebook
At 10 o’clock the next morning the first man came to the cabin.
When he entered the cabin John said as he looked at his list. “You must be, let me see now oh yes Mr Justin Falconer.”
“That’s correct sir.”
“ Well Mr Falconer when you last saw Mr Frank Armstrong.”
“Yes in fact I think I must have been the last person to see Frank. Because he was on his way out of camp on his way up the north trail, I was on my way back into came, I spoke to Frank because he had a bag on his back and a shovel and a pick in his hand, which usually meant that he was going to look for samples, but I thought it funny to go out at that time of day, I said to him that it was a bit late to go up the trail he might get caught in the dark, he said he was just going to check on something and I was not to worry, he then said goodbye and off he went.”
“About what time would that be Mr Falconer.”
“Oh please call me Justin, and the time I would say was about 2 o’clock and 2 o’clock is late to go out, you see it gets dark about 3 o’clock.”
“Are you sure about the time.”
“Oh yes very sure you see Frank asked me the time.”
“Ok Justin and thank you, could you tell the Doctor to send the next one up.”
When he had gone John turned to face Jean and said. “Now there’s a funny thing, according to Mr Mc Cracked he was leaving camp about 1 o’clock but Falconer said it was about 2 o’clock, now what I want to know is what happened to the missing hour.”
There was a knock on the door and John shouted. “Come in.”
Then another man of about average size walked into the room.
John said. “Good morning you must be?”
My name is as you know on your list, my name is Adam Irgens and I am German and I do not give a damn if you are English or not.”
“Ok Mr Irgens, but we just want a few answers if you don’t mind.”
“You go ahead shoot what do you want to know.”
After the interviews were finished and the last man had gone John turned to Jean and said. “ Well Jean what do you make of that lot.”
“I don’t know John you’re the detective, what do you think.”
“Well there’s three in that bunch that I would that I would like to keep my eyes on, and the first one is that Frenchman, Mr Cruzan and the German Irgens,
And I’m not too sure of Franks mate Mr Mc Cracken, and the other thing is the missing hour, I would love to find out about that, no Jean everything here does not meet the eye, I think tomorrow I will take a look up the north trail that seems to be the last place your brother was seen.”
“Yes well I’m coming too so don’t even think about leaving me here.”
“Ok but you do as I say, if I say stand on your head then that’s what I want you to do.”
“Ok master I’ll take my orders from you, and now I will put you in a good mood, I will go make something to eat ok, now John take a couple of pans and fill them with snow.”
“Ok I will then I will go look over your notes while you are making a meal, is that ok boss.”
“Yes.”
John sat down and read through the notes and he came to the same conclusion, and was that was that Mr Cruzan and Mr Irgens were not in his opinion not to be trusted.
He had no reason to think this it was only a hunch.
After dinner that night John said to Jean. “How about we get cleaned up and we go over to the what did he call it, oh yes the den, we might pick up something there.”
“Right John I have the pan on to wash the plates and when that’s done we can go and have a drink or two.”
It was about seven when they got to the den.
There must have been about eight or nine people there but the Doctor was nowhere to be seen.

CHAPTER 1
JEAN
John Munkton was sitting in his office.
It was an August day and John was just sitting looking out of his office window he had a lot on his mind.
John was the owner of a small detective agency but. It had been five months since his last job.
And money was getting very short.
His sister Susan who was John’s secretary had not been paid for two weeks. But Susan said that he had not to worry and a job would turn up soon.
Still John knew that if something did not turn up soon then he would have to shut up shop.
His landlord was after rent. Which he did not have?
Then the door opened and Susan came in after her lunch break.
She walked up to John and said. Nothing yet.
No not a thing pet.
Well never mind I have a feeling in my bones that work is not far away.
Do you remember the last time you said that, we got a job that lasted six months, I hope things turn out the same as the last time.
Susan put her hand into her handbag and brought out a paper bag she handed it to John and said. Here John you have got to eat.
John said. I don’t know how you do it Susan you have not been paid for weeks.
Listen big brother John. I still have a bank account and the money in it all comes from you. So don’t be silly, what’s mine is yours, and anyway promised Mam to look after you until you got married and there’s no sign of that, now shut up and eat them pies and I’ll go make us a cup of tea.
Thanks I always knew I had the best sister in the world and if I ever make it to the top then I won't forget you.
Oh don’t worry John.
Well it’s just as well that you are happily married and I don’t have to worry about you starving.
Susan left him eating his pies.
About a minute later the phone rang John shouted to his sister. It’s ok Susan I’ll get it.
He picked up the phone and a woman’s voice said. Hello is that Munkton Detective Agency.
Yes that’s right.
Well could I speak to someone in charge.
Speaking I’m John Munkton.
Well Mr Munkton a friend of yours recommended you to me for a bit of work.
Oh I see yes could you tell me my friend's name.
Yes it was Joe Moore.
'Oh yes Joe, well I never, I have not seen Joe for about five years, now how can I help you Mam."
Well Mr Munkton I would like you to come to the estate we would like to lay the job out for you, can you come tomorrow about ten o’clock.
Yes Mam I can make it what is the address.
Have you got pen and paper handy.
Yes.
Right have you ever heard of John George Anderson estate.
When John heard this. His face had a great big grin on it.
Susan came from the next room with a cup of tea.
She could see that John was smiling.
He saw her come into the office and he put his thumb up and he was grinning all over his face.
He started writing down the Address but there was no need he knew the address just about everyone in the district knew the address of the Armstrong’s.
Then he said. Well thank you very much Mam, I’ll be there on time tomorrow goodbye.
John stood up and grabbed his sister. My god Susan this just might save us.
Oh I’m pleased John.
Yes Susan you might get paid yet and a bit of bonus too I hope.
The next morning John came to work early he was all on edge waiting to go to the Armstrong estate.
Then the time came and John was going out of the office door when Susan said. Where are you going.
I’m off to the Armstrong estate.
It’s only nine o’clock.
Yes but it’s a long way to the Armstrong’s on the bus.
On the bus, what’s wrong with your car.
Oh nit ran out of petrol just as I was driving up my drive last night, I was very lucky it happened where it did.
Susan went to her bag and took out her car keys then threw them to him and said. What do you think the Armstrong’s would think of you if you did not have a car, it would be a bad advert don’t you think, now sit down and I’ll make us a nice cuppa, you have all the time in the world.
He found himself driving up the Armstrong drive.
The drive was about a half a mile long and the house came into view.
It was a very big house and when he pulled up at the front door he got out of the car and said to himself. My god I can smell money.
He started walking to the front door but before he got there a man dressed all in black came out to greet him.
Good morning sir, my name is Gibbons, will you follow me sir.
He took John through the very large building he stopped outside a large door.
John made a mental note that everything about this house was very large.
Gibbons knocked on the door and waited for an answer.
Then a woman’s voice said. Come in.
Then when they were inside Gibbons said. A Mr Munkton Mam.
John was a bit surprised when he saw the woman standing by the large fireplace she was not what you would call beautiful but she had something about her that made John feel the hairs on the back of his neck stand on end.
He was going to enjoy this job if he got it.
She put out her hand. And he took it.
Then she said. Good morning Mr Munkton, will you take a seat, and would you like some tea or coffee.
Er good day Mam coffee will be fine thank you.
She turned and looked at her manservant and said. Thomas bring coffee for Mr Munkton and tea for me.
Thomas said. Yes Mam.
Then he walked from the room.
"Well Mr Munkton, you will be wanting
